    I'm glad you brought up Snow Piercer, The Protector with Tony Jaa are two great examples of what Okja was trying to attempt. Chicken Run was a better example with comedy thrown in to boot.

    Continued abuse of animals on farms is one of the reasons why it becomes increasingly harder to support Factory Farms. You can tell that on some farms there is no oversight at all...

    Animal Abuse Exposed at “American Humane Certified” Foster Farms Slaughterhouse
    th-cam.com/video/vBZW2FKs8qs/w-d-xo.html
    At the same time, there are methods that are seen as abuse that I think are part of technologically evolving to accommodate the mass production of meat. I think it's fair to say that while these methods are not developed to torture the animals, we as a society have begun to change what we consider acceptable conditions for animals we eat. However, as long as meat is being mass produced, I do favor techniques and technology that help stream line the industry in the most humane way possible.

    I much prefer free range animals and their products to factory farm. I'm just not sure that such methods are sustainable as our population of meat eaters increases.
    Meat eating is part of the human culture. I think shaming people for eating meat isn't the way to change how we go forward. I think educating people on facts about meat and non meat alternative lifestyles is the best method to see long term change. I'm working towards reducing meat consumption but at the same time, I enjoy the balance of meat in my diet.
    Eating animals has been a huge part of our history and relationship with animals. As it becomes massively industrialized, that relationship is deteriorating and I wonder if at a certain point we shouldn't be moving toward synthetic meat entirely (the impossible burger).
    I'm still open to learning about this issue as I see both sides right now pretty equally.

    • @gh7213
      @gh7213 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Alachia Queen ultimately what your saying here is "I'm cool with 'humane slaughter'". In reality there is no such thing as humane slaughter. Free range is a joke. Not only is it unsustainable, it is actually no different in the end as an industrialized slaughter house. People always want to hear good news about their bad habits. Smarter folks like yourself will use things like appeal to nature an appeal to tradition fallacy to support your arguments about things that I am pretty sure you know are wrong in your heart. The fact that you are an animal lover tells me all I need to know about you on this issue. You have a huge voice. I really enjoy your channel you're wrong on this one. I mean that respectfully of course.

      I'm fine with eating genetically grown food as long as nothing dangerous is being added and it was identical to original meat cells.
      However why can't we eat animals that die of natural causes after running around free? You can add a sensor that detects pulse and will tell you when that animal has died

    Im a vegan and an animal lover, and I have real issues with the meat industry, but youre right that its not so black and white and simplistic. I think some people might even need the nutrition of animals whereas others can survive without them(different metabolisms). I think making the issue so simplistic reduces it to a straw man kind of argument.

    • @zachnesmith
      @zachnesmith 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's worse than simplistic: it's counterproductive. There is a middle ground to be met between meat-eaters, vegans and people who follow other forms of diet. I will believe that to my dying day. But people who beat their chests with one hand and jerk off with the other (and there's plenty of blame to go around when it comes to that) just hold things up. I am not a vegan, but I believe in building bridges.

    I eat meat but agree with alot of what the film says. I don't believe any animals who are farmed for food have a good life, free range or not. And I don't think they have made the super pigs a lot more intelligent as pigs are very intelligent animals. The cows and pigs going into slaughter houses in real life can sense and smell and feel something bad is happening. They maybe don't know that they are going to be killed tho.

    I don't even like animals, but I will admit that killing sentient animals :In today's world: is unnecessary right? I eat meat too and I love it, but even I have to admit that it's kinda fucked up that we're breeding animals so they can die because we like how they taste 😕.. Why not try fake meat? I heard it doesn't taste like cardboard anymore 😖 I know I sound like a hypocrite but I'm actually going to be Vegan in the future, I just wanna make sure I'm doing this right, the way I want to.

    From my understanding of genetic modification, the reason so many people are against it is because of the exploitative patenting process, not because of the nutritional content. The free range argument is a tale as old as time, and the truth is that factory farming will never be 100% ethical and the majority of meat comes from these farms. The free range subset is not a sustainable alternative for the average meat eater, because they can't produce enough meat for every meat lover.

    I enjoyed this movie. I haven't objected entirely switching to plant based diet, but for the time being I also don't object to eating meat in every meal I have today. I don't overly consume meat, I won't eat poultry and pork and beef all in one sitting...except for when I'm at Arby`s, at which point I eat all varieties of meat at once for the full experience. I don't recommend only eating meat, but I do recommend if you do make sure it's cooked thoroughly and delicious.

    • @PlantBasedBride

  • @khany82

    I didn't think it was anti meat, more anti gmo and consumerism (probably corporatism). The film seemed to be ok with naturally caught fish (I thought Okja ate it), chicken more a return to naturalism (there's a different term I don't remember). I liked it, but then again I don;t eat red meat anyway haha

    • @Josephstar100

      khany82 The Netflix branch in my country has a hashtag marketing that translates to "ForOkja" encouraging/guilting people to stop eating meat/animals. So at least in my country, this movie is marketed as anti-meat too.

    Well hey, that was totally my reaction to the movie: stop shoving your agenda down my throat, movie. Am I pro animal cruelty or pro evil corporations? HELL NO, no thank you. But that doesn't mean I need a heavy-handed lecture presented in film form. Realistically, even if you put the agenda situation aside, the movie itself is all over the place: the tone is very inconsistent, some of the acting is very over the top, the characters are one-dimensional, the story is very by-the-numbers. And that ending? SPOILERS...
    Yay we saved one pig. Rejoice! Because movie logic.

    • @mikeell3763
      @mikeell3763 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The movie didn't even have a strong agenda. The director said this film was just food for thought, and he's not even vegan. Vegans have to deal with meat eaters agendas every day. Quit playing the victim. If you don't like it you don't have to watch it.

    • @ImpressionBlend
      @ImpressionBlend 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hmm? "Victim" is a bit of an exaggeration, don't you think? I just said I don't want to get preached to when I sit down to watch a fictional story. The director has made some outstanding films in the past that I have loved, so yea, I'm going to check out his newest one-it was one of my most anticipated films of the year. I can't know what the movie is like until I watch it so the whole "if you don't like it you don't have to watch it" doesn't work here. And as I said, _Okja_ has more problems than just being heavy-handed.

    • @Alachia
      @Alachia  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was curious what your opinion was on this. I haven't watched your wrap up video yet cuz I wanted to film my Beguiled video before I watched it. I never watch a review of a film before I've done my own. So yay. just finished my Beguiled review so I can finally watch the video. :)
      what's even worse about this film is that it's co-written by a guy who did this fascinating study on internet shaming.. brilliant work.. for him to have co-written such a heavy handed movie made no sense to me. I was hoping they were going to go for an over the top parody of the entire industry or just go straight horror. neither happened sadly.

    • @ImpressionBlend
      @ImpressionBlend 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't wait to hear what you have to say about _The Beguiled_! I'm the same way, I don't watch any reviews until I film my own :) I was hoping _Okja_ was going to be more along the lines of _The Host_ though obviously the superpig is no monster, but I definitely was expecting a cohesive tone throughout the whole thing. It's like they couldn't pick which type of movie they wanted to film.

    • @harrysk7935
      @harrysk7935 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think this film had an agenda or was intended to be didactic at all, and I honestly feel as though many people who react that way are either projecting their own mixed feelings about eating meat or where within this story / world they would be placed, or just not viewing the film objectively. It would be like watching Godzilla and saying it had an anti-American agenda since he represents nuclear war; that would be a reflection of you, not the film's intent. But either way, I thought it was creative, and the scattered nature to me is what made it more interesting. I feel as though with such a lack of creative films being produced these days, it's refreshing to see something like this.

    I agree, this film was dull as hell, but my big problem was that both the bad guys (the meat industry) and the good guys (the animal lib front) were just SO GODDAMN CARTOON-ISH. I half expected Tilda Swinton to spontaneously grow a handlebar mustache and start twirling it while I thought the good guys were going to sprout angelic wings and sunshine shining out of their ass. They're presented almost like a goddamn cult (and if you're looking at the vegan community online, they're not very far off.) It was absurd. Princess Mononoke had the same theme/message of industry vs. nature and managed to be less cartoon-ish and it was a goddamn cartoon.

    I knew what this movie was going to be from the trailer. It looked about as subtle as Bambi. Any time it comes out that a lot of the food that I eat was hunted for and killed by me, the Bambi thing always comes up. It is a visual representation of a liberal orgasm. This falls right into line with that bullshit. I've about had it with people preaching to me that I'm an evil asshole for being white, a man, a meat eater, and cisgender. Manjikoa I used to work for family "organic" farms (3) and no, they are not the "happy dappy wholesome place" for animals. they still get slaughtered at the end of the day, theyre still locked in a huge room still squishing against one another, we would cut off their beaks and claws so they didnt eat one another from hunger (even though we fed them alot). and even if they lived on fields, roaming the land, theyre still not free, they end up getging slaughtered when their time came and u can know they grew sad when they knew it was time. no living being wants to die. not u or me and not any other species on this planet, we all desire to live. imagine you lived on a field,living ur life, up until someone told you that your life is over and slit your throat? go vegan and stop contributing to suffering and death. if I, as a person who worked on these horrible farms, can change my way of life, so can u.

    I agree with every single thing you've said.
    I hate how they portray this issue so black and white, it's way more complex than that, yeah, the meat (or food in general really) industry is fucked up most of the time, but like, ok, wanna talk cruelty & "cruelty free" food, why don't we also talk about how there are 5 year olds in 3rd world countries being exploited to pick up the vegetables you eat or how many industries basically have slaves... no matter how morally superior you think you are, most things you use and buy hurt someone in some shape or form.
    And like, you can be vegan if you want, and be anti meat if u want and it's really respectable an admirable even, but you also need to realize some people can't be vegan either for health related situations or simply because they don't have access or money to get healthy/vegan food, so yeah... this isn't good vs evil, it's way more complex.
    Also the anti GMO thing, they're not inherently bad, you can put more nutrients into food to help out people with a limited access to it, and we've been genetically modifying stuff since the beginning of agriculture itself so... what's the deal

    • @emb3863
      @emb3863 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      btw, what you said about fish being filleted alive, they're not actually alive, well... i'm sure that may have happened somewhere at some point but usually... what happens is the cells and nerves can still react to stimulus even after dead, so the salt and condiments make it twitch even if they're already dead and not even connected to the brain anymore, it also happens to frog legs (clearly not alive), even lizard tails when cut off by some accident or whatever can move around for a while... so yeah.

      You're essentially saying that because we can't eliminate all cruelty in our food system by changing what we eat we shouldn't even try. That's a pretty weak argument.
      I choose to do what I CAN do, which is not eat animals and cause them pain and suffering. I know I'm reducing exploitation of sentient beings in the world, and that's a good thing.

    I am not sure that any anmal being farmed for food will live a happy life? Would you lead a happy life if you are aware that you are raised and care for to be, ultimately someones' food? That said, idealistic people can be seriously detached from reality. Just be grateful you have meat or food to eat.

This cross breeding is old-time gmo before the manipulation that goes on at a deeper level now. So is kale. So I smirk when I see comments about the 'godgiven' things we have, from the mind of man.

    But you left the comments section on. But not to worry - I. WILL. BE. NICE. Here goes: You are actually the only one that I have heard that makes sense. How evil it is to kill adorable giant pig/hippo (pigpo) and turn them into delicious sausages and how dare they try and solve the planet's food crisis. The movie by the way sucks on many levels except the little Korean girl and the CGI. Jake Gyllenhaal acted like he had a gun to his head.

    • @PlantBasedBride
      @PlantBasedBride 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The easiest way to solve the world's food crisis is for everyone to go vegan. We currently grow enough crops to feed 10-11 billion people, but we feed to much of that to livestock reducing the number of available calories to the point that we can't even feed our 7 billion.

    You have such a cute dog and you look so lovely, other thing your videos are a bit too serious and to long, and i understand you want to put out the message. Other question, you look so cool and cute, you should get yourself a nice partner. that will make your life faster and you will be less serious on horrific subjects like the food industry and world pollution.

    My mum was a hardcore vegan so i grew up a weak child, i eat some meat nowadays but do my best to buy and support freerange suppliers.
    Factory farming is a massive problem and it's only get worse as the population grows, there are no simple solutions like some vegan(Gain)s would say, it's not just the governments job to fix things like this, it's the peoples job too. (buy freerange and boycot factory farmed foods)
    Cool vid, shame about the movie and love your dog.

    There was a little undercutting when the non-violent people became violent and the girl's fave food is chicken stew or whatever (think she was eating fish with Grandpa earlier, too -- the hypocrisy of some "vegetarians"...), but it wasn't enough. And two so-so Swintons -- just as in Hail, Caesar! -- does not equal a good Swinton. Boring AF.

    Honestly you seem intelligent and it's surprising how negative you are about this movie and how you thought it was force-feeding it's agenda to you (no pun intended). It's a brilliant movie that obviously outsmarted you. Re-watch it. It's a mockery of the current state of the food industry and the nature of humanity. It's much deeper than pushing some agenda you could even argue that the movie made the point that there's no point in being a vegan because there's no hope anyways and the people in power will always win and profit.
