I support about 100 house finches on my bird feeder. I tweaked my feeder to only allow smaller birds to feed due to my dove and grackle problem. They will go at it all day jockeying for the best feeding spots and even resort to hanging like bats when being pushed out by a more dominant finch. They are constantly chipping away at each other and get in such a frenzy at times, almost act as one organism in movement. Sort of like sardines making bait ball. It’s very interesting to watch, especially how they react when a blue jay does the hawk call to them them away from peanut feeder. Anyway I like your channel and will continue to enjoy it as it grows.
Excuse me would you mind sharing once more what the blue jay does that alerts the house finches? I'm just wondering if the blue jay alerts it to a hawk an actual predator or if the blue jay is trying to fake them out. I've been looking for a reason to appreciate blue Jays.... This might be it....(I'd love everyone but I buy nuts for the squirrels and chipmunks. And the blue Jays watch where I go and steal them 😖)
As far as feeding goes they go CRAZY for safflower seeds. Also in the summer AND winter they like eating jelly (I get all natural no added sugars). They like grape and strawberry but I think they like grape more. Sometimes I have 25+ on my balcony at a time! Although now they come in cliques since there are lots of other birds competing for food lol
I put up a Homebird window feeder in my front window and within 8 hours had a mated pair of House Finches feeding out of it. My 4 year old gave them names and they're nesting in our front tree. They also evicted the House Sparrows that were trying to set up shop. Interestingly, they show little fear of us and let us go right up to the window to watch them.
I have house finches living in my backyard. Just started watching the birds in my yard. Have nearly a dozen different species visit every day, the House Finch was my favorite, until 4 Rosy-faced Love Birds showed up this morning and stole the show.
I had a male house finch at my feeder recently. At first I thought it was a purple finch so thanks for the comparison. I live in the southeast. I was excited to see such a beautiful bird.
I wake up and go into back yard and whistle - these are the bird calls. I didn’t put food or anything. And this drew a beautiful range of birds to regularly hang out in my yard. I don’t have to capture them. They are here and I get to engage seeing them and hearing them sing.

I saw my friest one today on Vancouver island. Never seen them before in my life!

Love house finches…saw lots when it snowed but now I see mostly Junco’s!! How do I get back the House Finches?
