- The evening was September 7, 1991. The place was at the Bluegrass and Chili Festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Tony Rice Unit had been scheduled to play an afternoon set, but a pouring rain caused that performance to be canceled. There was still the evening set to go, and fortunately, the weather cooperated and Tony and the band were able to play. Tony remarked earlier that afternoon that it's a shame that the afternoon set was cancelled, because he was really wanting to play.
The rains did cause another problem. The sound system had gotten wet, and the sound would go from normal, to sounding like someone had thrown a blanket over the speakers. This can be heard and seen after the large squeal during Rickie's last fiddle solo on the tune.
Tony breaks a string during Rickie's second solo. You can hear it break during the final part of Rickie's solo. Tony nods at Jimmy Gaudreau to take it, and in the meantime, Tony can be seen changing the string with amazing quickness. After Jimmy plays it and Rickie takes another solo, Tony steps back towards the microphone, with just a couple of beats to get his capo back on. He reaches into his pocket and almost as with one motion, puts the capo back on and begins his awesome solo! He tunes the string at precise moments in his solo, and absolutely amazes everyone again with the beautiful chime he puts towards the end of his guitar solo!
No wonder Tony Rice is considered one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived!
Tony and the Unit were HOTTER than Blue Blazes in this performance!
