    • @Paul-kp1tu
      @Paul-kp1tu 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

The main issue for the harley riders group is that the imagery is very very particular. It’s of a group of blokes riding Harley’s who dress like an outlaw motorcycle gang members. Why would anybody want to dress and look like a bunch of drug dealing violent hoodlums? In America it seemed that that persona rules but prior to ww2 bike clubs were not outlaws but sporting and social groups sharing the experiences of the bikes and the skills needed. Harley chose to promote the outlaw style and thus has alienated every other sort of rider. Perhaps the 3 yr thing is about a dissatisfaction with this image that goes with Harley’s,
The risk of disappointment is very strong when you spend 30 to 40 thousand dollars and then find you are no better off, no new friends and you carry so much baggage. It’s sad because the young ones are not riding at all, or driving, or travelling.

    • @JPerez-zm4kr
      @JPerez-zm4kr 19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

@Paul-kp1tu who spends 30-40k on harley that doesn't understand the culture? What young guy has 30k to drop on a bike? These sportsbike clubs have the same outlaw mentality. The 3yr drop off has to do with these older guys not having the time to ride. I personally know ppl with 40k bikes that don't ride often. More than likely after they're done paying off the bike, they realize they never rode it to begin with and sell it. Many arent cut to be on 2s. The reason why harley doesn't have young riders has to do with price. End of story

Every time I run into someone who is even slightly interested in learning to ride, I emphatically suggest they take MSF courses. I explain that MSF provides the bikes at no cost (at least it used to be). I tell them it's a good way for them to find out if riding is for them without investing in a bike. Also, when they pass the course, they get their license and a 15% discount on their insurance.

I bought a used 2018 Softail Sport Glide. Kept it about 1.5 year. Rode in some groups. Everyone had loud modified exhaust systems, and I have tinnitus, constant ringing in my ears, that is attenuated by loud noises,e exhaust sounds and backfiring explosions. Many of the Harley riders in the groups were flat out outlaws, speeding everywhere, running stop lights, sometimes running red lights, true Lane Splitting here in CA, generally experienced but unsafe riders, where seeing a speed limit sign isn't even a suggestion, if you aren't scrapping pegs, you aren't cornering fast enough. Packed it all in and bought a couple of BMW R1250's in GS and RT formats. The RT is quiet, has shaft drive, and is a touring motorcyclists dream, if you equip it with a top box. it doesnt't burn the inside of my right leg if at a red light in the summer time. The BMW changed my perspective about motorcycles and motorcyclists. I still ride mostly alone. Less chance of an accident with someone in front of you doing something stupid in the group, or showing off their A type personality and stupidity. There's a lot of bold riders, on bikes, begging for Darwin Awards, sooner or later.

I'm 65, and have been riding on the street since age 16. Before that I rode off road on a 100cc dirt bike starting around age 12. I have owned over 40 bikes, and ridden over a million miles. I ALWAYS ride alone. My riding time is MY time. Way back when I was young I tried carrying a passenger, and quickly decided I would never do that again. I have NEVER crashed a street bike. My main type of street riding is touring. But NOT on a big bagger with a fairing and windshield. I tried a Goldwing, that didn't last very long. It was like riding a 2 wheeled car. Out of all the bikes I have owned, only three have been Harleys. All three were bought used. All three had/have carbureted EVO engines. I still own and ride two of them. A 1989 FXRS Low Rider, bought in 2003, and my first Harley, and a 2002 Sportster 1200C, bought in 2016. Both these bikes have bright shiny paint, lots of bright aluminum and chrome. I have added more chrome, and pretty stock looking aftermarket slip ons to make them sound like Harleys. For me, the whole point of owning/riding a Harley is the way they look, sound, and feel. I am not into the brand. I have owned Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Royal Enfield, and vintage Triumph and BSA. I loved almost all of them. But none of them had the Harley look, sound, and feel.
The fact is that H-D no longer makes anything I want. Not even close. In fact, you couldn't give me a new one, unless I could sell it and keep the money. They no longer have that Harley look, sound, and feel, they are mostly blacked out computers on wheels that can't be worked on or modified by an owner. Every single bike I have ever owned has been carbureted. I will NEVER own a computer bike. And I like bright shiny bikes with LOTS of chrome (though I'll pass on the neon green grips) The M8 engine has no feel, it's CANbus computer system is an absolute nightmare, and almost all the bikes it's in are flat black. The Sportster was the last real Harley (although they ruined it with computerized garbage and soaked it in flat black) and now it's gone. Other than small displacement dual sport bikes, I am a cruiser rider. A traditional cruiser rider. I wouldn't touch something like the Pan America or the "Sportster S", which is not a Sportster at all, with a 10 foot pole. H-D no longer makes "Harleys". And even for those who do want them, no one can afford them. $30,000-$40,000 for a new one, and after 10 years, H-D will no longer touch it, and independent shops don't have the diagnostic equipment or information available to it, so you have a very expensive boat anchor. My '89 FXRS is still running just fine, I can work on it, an independent Harley shop can work on it, and it will easily outlast me. The aftermarket makes all the parts necessary to keep it going. In fact, as sad as it is, if you want a new REAL Harley, you will have to build it from aftermarket parts. H-D has done this to themselves. And they have no one to blame but themselves. And their woke leftist German CEO.

NUMBER 2 How far to some new road and experience? I am blessed to live in an area that has some of the most beautiful and relaxing motorcycling roads in the world. Seven miles from the entrances to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. The art of riding for me has always been keeping in balance the love/hate relationship of riding. I've been riding 53 years, had everything from 90cc 2 stroke twins to 1300 in line 6 cyl. dressers. I've had 2 Harleys, a 1992 Heritage and a 2003 Road Glide. I enjoyed both and had little issue with either. I have seen AND experienced the pitfalls of motorcycle riding and ownership. I very seldom ride with more than 1 partner, I always ride one up. As for the wane in motorcycle riding, I believe one of the biggest issues is the upcoming generation of potential riders. Very few of them don't even want to be outside, and since they can't ride AND scroll on their "device", they are choosing their device. I hope this changes but I doubt it, at least with gen Z. Another issue that I see, as a retired 43 year motorcycle tech, I watched motorcycles becoming more complex, with more electronics, fuel injection, ABS, etc. etc. One of the appeals with motorcycles has always been the ability of the owners to work on them, upgrade them, tinker on them. Can't do that now, and I believe this complexity, just like modern cars, is destroying a part of motorcycle ownership that was/is still dear to a lot of us.

Wife and I been riding for about 7 years now. Im 61 and we didnt ride from Kids till about 2017. Most chapter members are older and don't do things that I think younger members would be interested in doing. A lot of people from 20 to 60 are busy with life. Every chapter should try to get and younger riders involved in ride that interest them. Group rides can be intimidating when you first start riding. I think that is a big thing that older riders might not understand. One chapter I'm in an older guy would drop his bike on nearly every ride. Positive note helps others know it's not a big deal.

Well….. this is a very honest video of someone concern with the future of motorcycling. In the case of Harley, their allure to a lifestyle based on pure North American culture and image sells a quick resolve to customers looking to be part of a specific group that not necessarily relates to motorcycling as a skill or an activity that’s liberating and definitely not for everyone ; “ lots of motorcycle owners, very few Motorcyclists “, perhaps the approach need to be more universal. Younger generations are more into purpose, practicality and advantages rather than image… an image that they can’t relate to.
Motorcycling is a lifestyle not an image. If you want to ride responsibly and safely you need to be serious about it. This is not an amusement park ride. Riders need to invest time and effort to learn an become proficient at the craft of motorcycling, this “ image “
Thing should be the last of your concerns. Most bike owners never learn how to ride that’s the reason they leave motorcycling. Stricter motorcycle licensing requirements just may be the answer. At 71, full time rider: ST1300 / RC51. Started in ‘75 and ride every day, all the time since then.

69 years old. Been riding since I was 7... if you count the mini bike with the clutch ringing...and trying to wheelie it over a little bump in the back yard.
Currently have 3 bikes. One is my 1973 Rickman Zundapp ISDT . Which I bought new. Its a basket case because I sold it to a friend who took it appart. Then gave it back in pieces. Then theres my 1978 Superglide. I bought new in 1978. And my "new" Harley. Which is an '06. Bought for my 50th birthday.
The Rickman was my first real motorcycle. Before that I was riding other peoples bikes. In the dirt. I rode the Rickman on and off road. I had a 72 Honda 750 and a 1975 Kawasaki 900 Z1b. I wish I kept them too.
Never been much into group riding. Always some fool acting stupid. Or crashing... but I did have a couple of friends over the years that I rode with regularly. Good close friends on and off the bikes. But we were going someplace. We had peaceful places to ride to. Events that most likely had nothing to do with bikes. Other than we love to ride.
Living in NJ has always meant dealing with insane drivers. Its just part of the experience.
These realities discussed here are of Harleys own making.
Lightly used bikes have been available for years after the insanity of the Evo/Twin cam buying craze. Where everyone with enough money to help inflate prices was waiting in line a year to buy a new Harley at rediculous prices. You would see them for sale... 1200 miles... listed with the serial number... as if they were classic Ferarris...
Those folks never rode much. They started not shaving Wednesday morning so they would look scruffy enough when they took their Saturday ride to the dealer for a T shirt and fellowship. Ice cream on the way home.
The factory gave them HOG to ride with. Not really a new thing as there were these types of clubs back in the 30s and 40s.
But most of these people were not riders. They wanted to feel the freedom. But they wanted the security of a group. And a new bike they never had to tinker with. Maintenence or modifications performed at the dealer for shocking prices.
That whole scene turned me off when ever I went near them on my Shovelhead... as they looked down their nose snearingly. I couldnt even have a motorcycle enthusiast conversation. Im into all things motorcycle... since I was a child. But all they wanted to talk about was how much money they spent having the dealer swap out parts. In one of those conversations I said my Shovelhead has 40,000 miles on it and has never been appart. They looked at me like I was nuts.
Mostly now I ride to work... yes still working at 70. Its a convenient location to ride to and I live in a ruralish area with great roads.
Ill never buy another new Harley. Never sell my old ones. And never go near the dealership unless I need something bad that they might have. And I live less than 2 miles from a dealership.
You would think I was the primary customer for a new Harley. Yet I dont even look at the new bikes in the showroom. For the last 30 years they seem to have done everything possible to alienate me.
Ohh well. Always wanted a Panhead.

And now if you have a shovel and you’re out and about your fawned over, it’s like the scales have flipped upside down. So great, we have the yuppie dudes from the 90’s to blame for conditioning dealers that we’ll over pay and I guess I’m riding one of those inflated 90’s priced bikes that I bought for $5k. Truth is enough Harley’s have been made that we don’t need them to produce or sell as many as they have in the past and I see a possible future where they limit their offerings and significantly scale back. But as a community of riders we need to band together to help our own and welcome new riders into the community.

If you take that survey in rural areas instead of urban areas you'd get a totally different answer. I have a rural buddy that has bought and sold 5-6 bikes ladt summer to now. He had a good job has free housing from family members all passing and he's single. With a ton of money in the bank a farm with buildings to fill its great for him. I still own the first Harley I bought. Ive only sold one of three Harleys I've owned. That's the one I should have kept. I just needed money to get newer one.
Group riding is ok for a short distance but after a ways people get bored and start looking around and bang a crash and it takes 10-15 people with them. Anchorage HOG on summer, made it out of town and on highway a bolder fell off mountain and took out a leader and 15-20 others killed up. All riding in position. I ride alone!

I've ridden with different groups of and on over the 50+ years I've ridden - but these days I really prefer riding by myself. I can go where I want, stop anywhere I want for as long as I want, and I don't have to be concerned about riding in a group... which in my view these days is more trouble than it's worth. It's just much less stressful riding alone. The last group of people I used to ride with 10 years ago just withered down to nothing as more and more people sold their bikes and moved on to other things. And of course, there was that ONE GUY - and there's ALWAYS that one guy - who caused all kinds of drama and basically poisoned the group by turning people against each other. It got really stressful and unpleasant. I'm never going to get myself into that situation again... I just want to RIDE without stress.
About the next generation of riders... this is frustrating. I started riding way back in 1972, in high school. I rode for two years before I ever even had a 4-wheel vehicle. Back then, my little Honda CB350 was FREEDOM to me. I loved riding it, and over the years I traded up to bigger and faster bikes. I now ride a 2012 FLHXSE3 CVO Street Glide with the Twin Cam 110" engine, and I will ride it until I can't ride anymore. I love it, and I can work on it myself. I just put new Zipper's RedShift RS587 cams in it, and new Cobra PowerPort headers and 4" Rinehart mufflers on it. I'm retuning it currently.
But, today's young people, taken as a group, just don't seem very interested in riding. Between my wife and me, we have 5 grown children from 45 down to 30 - and NONE of them ride, nor do I expect any of them to EVER ride. It's just not part of their world at all. None of them have ever even operated a motorcycle to my knowledge. To them, vehicles are simply things they need to get them from place to place. Performance and fun don't enter the equation at all. They are all about utility and little else, and it saddens me to realize that they will never experience the thrill of riding a motorcycle on curvy roads, as I grew up doing and still enjoy doing. I can't say that I understand our kids' view of life - but what parents ever really do? It is what it is, I guess, but it's frustrating to me nonetheless.
To me, that's the really telling part of the hurdles facing the motorcycle market... there are more and more manufacturers chasing fewer and fewer riders - and in Harley's case with more and more expensive bikes that the VAST majority of younger riders simply cannot afford and don't really want. That isn't a very positive environment for the manufacturers, especially companies like Harley - and to a lesser extent Indian, because Indian at least has some lower-priced offerings, and Harley really doesn't anymore.

Most of my riding friends have died I am age 73. I prefer to ride by myself, (2 wheel therapy) sometimes I have a passenger. I do not have or want any communication devices connecting me to anyone. Riding is more enjoyable just listing to the mechanical and exhaust notes. Since retirment 2009 I have not ridden out of state only within 100 miles of home.
I have ridden with different groups of people of different skill level. Several group rides inevitably 1 or 2 start doing STUPID, I have been the lead motor, usually I like to ride as the last motor in the group with a large distance separating me from the rest of the group. When I was employed at the H-D assembly in York, PA I road dayly from 1995 to 2009 rain, sleet, snow, or hail, I rode sidecar during slippery weather, I averaged over 100,000 miles total each year amoung the 5 motorcycles I owned. Currently I have 4 motorcycles and ride less than 1000 miles in warm months. I purchased a Miata because my brother-in - law scared her on his motor so she will not ride on my motor. When I road to Church my sister sometimes didn't go - sleeping late. With the Miata I pick her up every Sunday unless she is sick or has an in-law family reunion.

2 reasons I see. Young men are getting into other hobbies since their is an endless amount of things to get into these days. Harley priced the young guys out of getting into a Harley when other brands are cheaper and offering more bang for the buck. The young guys have no brand loyalty. I’ve been riding since I were 32 back in 2011 on my 4th Harley, I’ve never ever considered a hog chapter. To me they want to look like an MC with a bunch or worthless patches all over their vest like it really means something. I went the route of MC and loved it. I’m solo now and still would never deal with hog chapter. All that stuff goes straight into the garbage can.

Great comment. I wonder if these three year and done owners, which I expect, even though the survey documents never stated, are 45 years old on average, because that’s the average age of a Harley buyer according to Harley Davidson, I wonder if there was a better organized community to interact with, so they could grow thier knowledge and experience and someone is there to nudge them if they’d still be riding today?

Most men in their 40’s have probably had a Harley or 2 and maybe got into another brand like Indian.i think the average 3 year rider are in their 30’s or late 20’s. Which makes the argument of the younger kids are not buying Harley’s obsolete and dumb. Maybe not as many today are into the hobby but still buying them. A new riders best bet is to hang out at the Harley shop and dealer rides plus bike night to melt friends. But at the same time considering how rude and stupid people are these days a new rider might think he’s being made fun of for having a lesser bike or older one. As I get older I prefer to be more and more alone and i was the opposite when I were younger and new. They just have to figure it out. Plus the added cost of owning and maintaining a Harley has become very expensive. They getting rid of these bikes before the warranty expires is another reason why.

Sure. I'm just saying IMHO that's one BIG reason motorcycle sales are down. The typical Harley Davidson rider is aging out AND the motor company is not bringing in young riders. The "new riders" today are middle aged Drs, Dentists, CEOs, etc that are going through their middle aged crisis and trying to capture the youth/outlaw they missed out on!
Those riders (for the most part) find out after spending $32k-$$35k that this isn't for them.

The world of motorcycling is changing...the trend worldwide is for smaller, more manageable, lighter bikes. Harley continues to produce beautiful bikes, but unfortunately most are overweight & tall.some are hard to manage in slow situations (parking etc) that's one reason you find people swap for a lighter, smaller bike. Same as Adventure bikes, got to be 8' tall to ride one !! Think of the extra sales brands would have, if they had options for lighter, lower bikes.... I read an article that nearly 10% of Harley's new purchasers are women, fantastic !! but because on average they do not have the same strength as men, moving & riding comes as an extra challenge. I know of many women that get off their learners license riding a small bike, then going straight out & buy a Street Glide or Road Glide ! And then watch them drop them repeatedly on rides trying to negotiate them into parking spots or fuel bowsers ! 2-3 years later they abandon the bike world because they have lost interest.

I rode in my youth but hung up my helmet because of the kids. They are out of the house so in 2023 I returned to riding. I’m accustomed to riding alone. I took the MSF BRC through a Harley Dealer as a refresher, so I get invited to and attend events. I am also a member of a BMW riders group and a Moto Guzzi riders group. There is a big difference between Harley and the BMW and MG groups. HOG events, I shake my head and chuckle, I really don’t get it. There are some riders there, but it does seem mostly about ego and image. I have never seen a group of people so fascinated by smoke and noise. While I have never felt unwelcome showing up on my BMW or my Moto Guzzi, it is clear that I don’t belong, I’m not really accepted, have never been asked to join a ride nor has anyone accepted my invitation to ride. The BMW and MG groups are mostly riders meeting for the love of riding, not ego or image. Some of the BMW group members don’t own BMW. Sure the occasional friendly jab at the other brand is thrown out for humor’s sake, but everyone is welcome and friendly. I have been invited to join rides and riders have accepted my invitation. Entirely different dynamic. And quieter as well😂
For anyone looking for a group, I would suggest join BMW MOA. The have a grant program and reimburse for a part of rider training, the Anonymous book lists members that are willing to help in emergencies, repair, trailer, a place to stay. Other benefits too well worth the membership fee. Then search for BMW MOA affiliated local clubs. You can find the cubs without joining MOA, I know our group welcomes any rider who shows up whether or not they are a member. Some events and rides have fees for non members, but they are always welcome.
In all 3 cases, the average age is a bunch of old guys for sure. We would like to see more younger riders joining, they are welcome. It would be nice to have youth in the clubs and be able to carry the club into the future. My son started riding, I am hoping he will join me for some of the meetings and rides. Keep the shiny side up.

HOG = Horribly Overgrown Goofballs! All those patches and doodads I totally agree that it’s just for show!
I’ve been in a few organizations Vet groups (because I’m a combat veteran) and now I’m riding with one of the oldest MC’s in the country… hint, they started out in California in 1946 when they stopped in Hollister CA and drag raced up and down the Main Street and the first President was none other than Wino Willie (RIP Brother Wino)
They even made a movie based on that 4th of July weekend called the Wild Ones with Marlon Brando and Lee Marvin. We were in Life magazine that vilified us as outlaws and drunks! Best press we ever had!
Still a great club that I have been part of for the last 11 years and proud of it! We ride without fear but we stay in our lane! We don’t subject our members to dangerous situations beyond any control.
But we ride hard and ride fast!
It’s certainly NOT for everybody. We vet pretty hard on motorcycle skills! We watch each other’s backs. It’s not safe to ride without keeping your head on a swivel!
So if you ever run into a group of people who seem to have their sh*t together you might think differently of motorcycle clubs, riding clubs and the like. There is something for every rider.
We go see a lot of places and rides that you’ll never forget! Our reputation has kept this club going since 1946! BFU!

I still own the two Commandos I bought in the 70s.
For me, HD represents way too much conformity. Riding is about the travel and the experience. It isn't about the motorcycle brand, especially one that includes so much conformity. I can already go wherever I wish, and for about the price of a Sportster, Ive got the 3 bulket proof vintage tourers for my brothers to ride.

@KennyQuestShow when I did switch i wasn't sure if I would stick to cruisers or not so I slowly went that way. First I searched for a black and chrome yamaha vstar 1100. It looked the most like a harley and I got it with little over 9thousand miles for 2500 dollars. I rode it a few times b4 winter. The next riding season I started looking for a harley street glide. I found a 2012 with just over 10 thousand miles on it. I still wasn't sure about crusier life yet and didn't want to plank down the money on a brand new one so I found a barley broke in used one for way less money. So your right about the problem. It's not just harleys people are buying and not riding. The fact that I was able to find both a harley and a metric cruiser. Both with very few miles shows your right. People get the bike bug and go buy one then either they loose intrest or just don't have the time to enjoy it. My neighbor up the road had a pearl white vstar sitting in his yard for a good few years. Whole time he had it I seen him and the wife ride it once. One day my wife and I were over talking to them and we finally figured it out. That couple was riding one day and rode up on a bad bike wreck. They rode home and except for that one day we seen them never rode it again. Fast forward a couple years and they got divorced him and his son both bought cvo dressers and rode them every weekend for a while. Now even b4 winter started sitting in both their bikes began to sit. In a few years someone will get a good deal on those barley riden dressers. And now i still have the vstar my youngest son rides it now, it now has over 30 thousand miles on it. My harley now has over 45thousand on its clock. They get riden now like they were built for. And both bikes bought b4 covid the harley right as covid was starting the vstar a year b4. Though I do believe covid was a factor this problem has been around longer than covid.

Have to agree about the HOG riding groups, i went to one last year out of Kissimmee and found a close knit group of unfriendly pompous people, didn't even ride back after lunch everyone took off, it's nice having a riding buddy or two but I'll ride alone over a HOG group of posers. If you were to ad everything up and weigh it on a scale, Harley would rate at the bottom of the pile in every category.

That’s the vibe they advertise. Keeps out the riff raff I guess. FTW.

Three years, really. I would have been done by the time I was 18 and got my first car. Until I was 18 My 175 Bridgestone was my first car. 69 now, dam were did them years go. Six rice grinders and four Harley's. I don't ever remember saying that I don't want to go for a ride because I can't find anybody to ride with. There has been times that I have looked up at the sky and just laughed out loud. It wasn't the love of the bike I was riding, it was that I was riding. That passion still burns strong. Somebodies fad bike becomes somebody else's next bike. Thank you RUBs. The 2025s are coming out so get on in there, you don't have to ride it but it looks cool in your garage. Had to laugh at the 30 to 50 miles. For me an evening ride might be 50 to 100 miles. A weekend ride could be 125 to 150 miles with friends or 150 to 250 solo, no bar breaks, results my very.
I have had many reasons to stop riding and I don't encourage anyboby to ride. I will be the first to tell you that if you go out that driveway you my never come back. You pick your passion and assess the risk. But if you keep the rides down to 30 to 50 miles that lowers the risk lol.
Lol I have been riding a few more than the three years but the two most likely reasons that I stop riding is, I got to old to hold the bike up or I hit a third Deer and it made my wife a Widow.
Thanks Kenny for another great video. Just wondering are you going to pull the plug after three or so years or are you going to buy a new bike to clutter up the garage? Just asking for a friend.

Well I surpassed my 3rd riding anniversary so I guess I beat the odds! It’s true though, it’s not very hard to ride 200 miles in day. Thanks for your comment!

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
      And summer’s lease hath all too short a date;
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

Me and my brother ride his Kawasaki's together and having someone to ride with makes it so much more fun. But it's about cost of entry with Harley they are big heavy expensive bikes not real good for beginners. They would do much better on a smaller lighter bike that's more manageable I ride an 800 and I still think a full size Harley would be too much bike for me.
