  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ I finally got my hands on a Sunset, so I thought I'd try to answer the question many people were asking - which pairs with the Iridium better? Obviously the answer will be different based on your own circumstances.

    Thank you. I've had this question for a while & this gives me what I needed to know.

    John, thank you very much for this video. It’s the best demo of these two pedals I’ve seen. I actually use both. I use the riverside as my preamp and the sunset as every boost / dirt pedal I would ever need. I’m a small apartment player so I can’t have big amps and no way getting real gain from a tube amp without the police showing up.

      I use the Riverside as preamp plus an IR loader and you have a amp-less rig

    Hey John thanks a lot for this demo! I found that I like the sunset's feel better than the riverside. Not that the riverside is not good at all, Its just the sunset has a better feel for me. For some reason though it did not convince me enough to purchase it to replace my boss od 200. Maybe you can explore getting some heavy tones from the two OD's in the Punch mode of the strymon?

    Hey John, thanks for the great video. I know I'm late to the party but I just ordered a sunset and I recently got an iridium. Is your iridium going straight into your interface? Been trying to figure out how to get the best out of it for home recoding use.

    Big fan of strymon and waiting on the delivery of my iridium. But giving you the pedal for 30 days after all the videos you've uploaded regarding their products and the amount of people that you've likely influenced to buy (including myself) is an absolute kick in the face!

    You really did a great job running through all the sounds in a relatively short time. Great job. Can't wait to try mine. I had been curious about this comparison for some time. It seems like you've confirmed my gut feeling on it. Even That Pedal Show said something like they were struggling to find a reason someone would choose the Riverside over the Sunset, seeing how the Sunset can more or less do what the Riverside does, but the flexibility of the Sunset really goes way beyond the capabilities of the Riverside.

    • @7Boots
      @7Boots 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Both pedals have a very different approach. It seems Riverside is less flexible, but with the 3-band-EQ, both switches that transform the characteristics quite substantial, and the optional boost function, the high quality base sound can be transformed very good to match the amp. John has shown the mid-boost sounds with high gain setting and probably set the rear switch to a darker mode. However, you’re also able to dial in fat and transparent distortion tones. When lowering the mids, using the low gain setting and turning mid-boost off, it gets really chunky and very dynamic / open sounding as well. The boost also helps here. Mid-boost drags the sound into Soldano territory, I think. It’s a really nice pedal, especially since the gain knob changes the character a lot which you would not suspect. This is also why it is that big. ;-) That being said, the Sunset tones sound really fantastic here!!
      Think I run a different approach - actually I’m one of those clean-boost guys, I guess. This is a different territory than the fluid, singing lead tones on a Strat that we see here. I’ve always liked Riverside a lot since it offers so much more than your trusty 808. On a one-channel amp, the pedal brings two different base sounds (Fav setting), each of these with a fat boost option, paired with a very simple interface. For this you usually need 3 other pedals.

    I bought both with the view of using the Riverside as the "overdriven Fender" & "Marshall Plexi" amps in a box, and the Sunset in front of the Riverside as a Screamer &/or Klon to push the it further. Both running into the Iridium.
    All great, but not magical....
    Replaced the Riverside with a Keeley Super Phat mod ( overdriven Fender ) and Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret ( overdriven Plexi ), both of which leave the Riverside in their wake for those tones.
    I replaced the Sunset with a Keeley D&M Drive, which LOVES other pedals.....
    Now getting the best out of the drives AND the Iridium.

    • @johnnathancordy

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts David! Isn't the Keeley Super Phat Mod a Blues Driver? I remember looking at that pedal a while ago!

      @@johnnathancordy Your demos are a joy to watch and listen to.
      The Keeley Super Phat Mod is indeed a Blues Driver. I'm using it in front of the Iridium Round tone for a transparent drive with a enough "sponginess" to warm it up - exactly as I would with a Fender Amp.
      I'm using the D&M Drive in place of the Sunset to create a bit more push. I wanted to love the Riverside and Sunset, but they just didn't feel as .....organic.
      The Iridium on the other hand, is a keeper!
      As is the HX Effects......

    Hey John, have you tried to stack both pedals? As far as I know the Riverside is designed to simulate the gain stages of an amp whereas the Sunset simulates different dirt pedals. So it seems like a logical thing to do to feed the Sunset into the Riverside

      Same haha
      Edit: Very happy with my riverside! Each gain stage is like it's own drive pedal, the mid boost and high gain gives way more variety. I like the tight mid range because I run it with a keely BD2 and they sound great together. Going to get a small strymon pedal to unlock the 6db boost that the riverside offers.

    Do you at wish the Sunset had 3 band EQ like the Riverside, or is the Sunset voiced in a way that you don't really feel a need for it?

    • @johnnathancordy

      It's voiced perfectly for my taste so I don't mind!

      @@johnnathancordy cool. Just got mine tonight and I'm on the fence. It sounds smooth but sort of lacks personality if that makes sense. All my other drives have more of a sonic signature of one kind or another, even if it's subtle and hard to put into words. The Sunset though, might fit better in a dense mix because of it's neutral character. Wondering what you think of the overall sound compared to analog dirt pedals you have.

    Hi, I am riding a pedalboard with the HX Stomp and would like to know if you find it necessary to maintain a compressor or not. I have a Cali76 CD and I really like the pedal but honestly I don't know if it will be so necessary with Stomp. Beyond the doubt of the compressor, my idea is to keep 2 overdrives and delay / reverb. Thank you!

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've gigged it with and without a Cali 76 stacked...I'm not sure it's definitely needed, but it takes the compressor well if that's a key part of your sound why not?

    Hi Jonnathan!! do you think the sunset + iridium are enough for achieving a Hendrix SRV kind of tone? I'm thinking about adding a revival drive compact to the equation but... maybe the sunset and Iridium are enough? I'm aiming for a really spanky strat kind of tone, Whats your advice? maybe iridium + revival + sunset? thanks
