Yeah it’s really good. First two episodes are probably the weakest (still fine though) but after that is better and better)
Yeah, the first couple episodes are basically Rick and Morty rip off without anything fun or nuances. The show does get much better halfway through the 1st season when the writers laid off on Beckett.
It's one of those things that really shouldn't work, and then goes out of its way to say "I DONT CARE IM GONNA WORK ANYWAYS".

If you are not watching lower decks, you are missing out. The show is hilarious. The show is about the adventures of the lower ranking officers. When you see on TNG/TOS/VOY and so on, you see them give a PADD to a lower rank officer and then walk away and never see them again. In Lower Decks you see what they do with PADD or the crap assignments they get for being lower ranks. The show is going to premier season 4 next month. You have plenty of time to catch up. The show throws in jokes and refences to the other shows in the Star Trek world, even using aliens that were first seen in the 70s animated series. Jonathan Frakes directs a lot of the episodes in Lower Decks and he directed this episode too. The characters look pretty much just like their animated versions.
The 1970s animated Star Trek series voiced by the original cast is officially considered star trek canon, and lower decks is explicitly a TNG era sequel to that original animated series. And is just as canon. (The original series had comedy episodes, such as the trouble with tribbles...)

There's an in joke toward the end. When CommanderJack Ransom says that Number One was the hottest first officer... yeah, the actor providing Ransom's voice is Jerry O'Connell, who just so happens to be married to Rebecca Romijn, who plays Number One.
They didn't turn 2D in the middle of the episode because Mariner made that drink with a substitution alcohol.... at the end Ortegas had traded with the Orion Scientists for the alcohol that would "truly mess up your life." Also Boimler (Jack Quaid) improvised the "Ryker" as he swung the leg over the saddle to sit with Jonathan Frakes Directing. To have been there when that happened.

My only complaint is that Animated!Pike's hair is somehow LESS cartoonish than the real thing.

The in-joke at the end when the first officer praises Number One as hot is that he's played by Jerry O'Connell (Stand by Me, Jerry Maguire), Number One is played by Rebecca Romijn (X-Men), and in real life, they're married.
For a long time TNG and VOY were my favorite Star Trek shows, but Lower Decks is in there now. It brings a sense of levity and adds new perspective to Star Trek.

Different time travel mechanisms have different rules, and this portal is clearly the "predestination, no changes" type. Temporal security didn't show up because they didn't (couldn't) change the past: they were already talking about historical things they were about to be responsible for before going through the portal.

The space slug in the opening is a reference to the opening for Lower Decks.

This created funny fan theory that every character in Star Trek: Lower Decks is constantly drunk, which made theme see everything around them in 2D format.
The reason UHara and the others didn’t become animated in the bar with the drinks because they didn’t have Orion alcohol, but when Captain Pike told the oRyan’s that they could get credit for discovering the portal so Captain’of the Orion ship, give them real alcohol give made those drinks with it really became animated later and that’s why mariner says you don’t want to try the real stuff because it will mess you up
The quote Pelia (Carol Kane) made to Boimler is from actor Cary Grant. His real name was Archibald Alec Leach, so he had to "become" Cary Grant.
I love the fact that they are played by their voice actors. I remember when this crossover was announced, I was worried they'd recast them. Thank god they didn't

It is implied that the entire Lower Decks is drunk on Orion Hurricanes
So halfway through the episode Mariner says they don't have the right alcohol to make the real version (They don't interact with the Orions on that level this early). At the end of the episode they make the real cocktail because the Orions gave them a bottle of the right alcohol as a peaceful exchange. That Alcohol has trippy effects on the drinker.
Which says something about Lower Decks

Her mother is the captain of the ship her father is a admiral Starfleet, and she loves to break the rules in the name of fun the rules. But she’s good at heart she’s good officer
This was actually my first SNW episode ever. I loved it, though. Seriously. When Jack Quaid improvised the Riker maneuver Wil Wheaton called it "a very big swing" on The Ready Room and Frakes said, "The whole episode is a big swing!"
Marriner is super important. She has been an ensign forever. She gets away with shit because her mum is the captain. Took me 2 seasons to get that.

It’s really great you were completely unspoiled about this! It was one of the most-eagerly awaited episodes of the entire season, ever since it was announced at one of the Comic Cons last year. I love Lower Decks so much, as it’s jam-packed full of Easter eggs and references to stuff from the entire of Trek. It’s very funny and you should definitely check it out. It was so cool getting to see Boimler and Mariner in live-action.

I kinda wish this particular one was on Lower Decks (like part of their season) but on the Strange New Worlds you get a different intro and end bits but the middle chunk (the majority) is the same between the two so you get a little extra depending on which series it is
also fun fact: The voice actor who plays Commander Ransom (he compliments Una on the poster near the end) in Lower Decks is the real life husband of the actress who plays Una

You really do need to watch lower decks on the channel, it is an interesting take on trek with tons of easter eggs. Glad you were still able to enjoy the show without knowing much about the 2 characters.

I've been following Star Trek since I was a kid, Lower Decks is honestly my favorite. Because it's a love letter to ALL the rest of Star Trek.

Lower Decks is an Easter Eggs-travaganza. Sometimes the cuts are so deep, I feel embarrassed I didn't remember them.
The Spock we see in SNW, so far, is the Spock who is younger and not had Christine dump him for Roger Corby or have to be on a break for seven years from his fiance. Spock decided the best way to deal with that was to act more Vulcan. That's why he acts the way he does in TOS.

They only had REAL Orion Hurricanes at the end when they got that notorious liquer Mariner was mentioning earlier when she made the "mock" Hurricanes ...and she did mention a few times that it was probably better since the real stuff will mess you up. 😁
Folks tend to love or hate Lower Decks. I'm in the like it camp because while it can be insanely zany, it's really never disrespectful of the Trek universe. It's FILLED with references to the whole Trek history, but it feels less like 'fan service' and more like they're mining a rich history for jokes or to reexamine stuff that didn't seem problematic in, say, the 1960s, but could use a second look now. Like the "not all Orions are pirates" thing. In the original series, they were comic book villains or sex slaves. Lower Decks, while animated - has deeper characters than the original series. And because they're animated, they can do stuff live action producers can only dream of.
I'll 2nd the comment about saying to watch Lower Decks. It's high quality!

Came across your channel today and have enjoyed going through a few of your videos! If you haven't started into it yet, you DEFINITELY need to check out Lower Decks! I was extremely dubious of the concept when it was first announced.... like, Star Trek doesn't need an animated comedy show. But, Lower Decks almost immediately became one of my 3 favorite Trek shows. It is always just such fun. And it hits that sweet spot of having fun WITH Star Trek and not making fun of Star Trek... Star Trek is in on the jokes instead of being the butt of the jokes. And for being tight, little 20-25 minute episodes, they do a great job telling great stories and having nice character moments and development.
Yeah you'll breeze through lower decks don't worry. And tbh I think you'd probs like the show. Lots of references to trek lore. And the boys actor and black girl knock it out the fucking Park
Lower Decks episodes are half as long as Strange New Worlds episodes, and the false resolution where Boimler was about to go back before Mariner arrived was right when a Lower Decks episode would have been wrapping up.

The speed at which the jokes keep flying at you is a bit jarring at first, but then you'll see it's actually a very well written Star Trek show.

Aw, the Vulcan politics stuff at the end of Enterprise is some of my favorite stuff. If you haven't gotten into Lower Decks yet, I'd say it's two separate good shows. It's a good Star Trek show and it's also a really great insider's meta commentary on all Star Trek. It may get into algorithm zeitgeist since season 5's coming out in a couple months.
if they made the s02 blue ray with the option to show that animation theme for every episode, i'd buy it... especially if you could replace the normal theme with the musical episode theme.
I completely blame Boimler for the break up of Spock and Chapel. If a time traveller told me that I would not have any significant influence on the future life of my partner it would send me into a depression spiral.

I'm surprised you don't remember the Orions. Trek has made comments about how the green women were well know as being very sensual. Fandom/pop culture is filled with Orion Slave Girls cosplays/tropes. In fact, in the Kelvin timeline movie, Pine's Kirk sleeps with Gaila, Uhura's roommate, who is an Orion. The only species more irresistible are Deltan women.

Mariner has spent TONS of time in the Brig, or after a promotion being demoted, and serving under her mother doesn't help.
The opening credits have 2 Easter eggs to LDS itself(yes that IS actually the abbreviation of Lower Decks). The series is 3 complete seasons(30 episodes in total) of 22 minute episodes( so you could totally pull off multiple episodes in a single video). It follows the 4 ensigns you see here, onboard the USS Cerritos a California class Starship (starting in 2380) post ST Nemesis. Those are Engineering Ensign Rutherford, command Ensigns Boimler and Mariner, and Medical Ensign Tendi. The joke that Mariner made about getting her picture taken at Pikes party so that she could mess with her mother is extremely hilarious when you find out that her mother is also in Starfleet( I will tell you who her mother is because that's the punch line from the very first episode of which I do not want to ruin). There is a very devoted fanbase of lower decks because of the irreverent humour within the series which I would classify as being Galaxy Quest-esq in it's execution. And you will find that we will always recommend that you watch this extremely entertaining series
I ended up watching Lower Decks thanks to the crossover and I really like it. The two actors here look a lot like their illustrated versions which was handy for the crossover.
You remember the Orions from episodes of TOS and TAS, plus mentions on Enterprise, DS9, and Voyager, then further appearances on Discovery and Prodigy. They're not just on Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks.
I don’t remember them at all. I have to go back and watch and DS9 and Voyager was my main shows. But that was soooo long ago lol I have to just rewatch and I’ll be like ohhhhh yeah 😂
