Zainab, as an immigrant from East Africa, I was not prepared for the dynamics in America. Coming in, I thought there was going to be a sense of common identity when I moved here for college. However, the minute I landed, I discovered black tribes: African Americans on one side, African immigrants on one side, those with Caribbean heritage on another side, and a fourth almost forgotten group of those with African heritage from other parts of the world like Latin America, Europe. I am fascinated by people so I made it a mission to understand each grouping. What I found was so much to love, so much to learn, so much depth, some questionable opinions, so many excellent individuals with fascinating, varied experiences. There are so many levels of black and navigating through each of them is a worthy experience. People are people and are best approached and appreciated as individuals. Meet people, listen to them, you will find common ground even if the only common ground is the venue of your encounter.

46:43 I'm glad you circled this back to the blk v nggs rhetoric. We have to remember that all of us are allowed our preferences. Everyones' conditions aren't meant for every body's pleasure. What validates an experience is not ever gonna be online/public forum. So glad you said it!

I’m with you. I had a friend who would do this and at the beginning I wouldn’t point out the obvious and would seethe silently. I even tried to match her ordering just to justify splitting the bill. I was no match to her. So eventually I mustered the courage to make sure the server put my order on a separate bill.

Group dinner bill splits are one of the worst social gathering event's ever created. It creates so much underlying confusion and sneaky observations 😂... mentally be like he just gone order 5 drinks huh and all i got is this water. Either im paying for the event flat out or im not going. 1 on 1 dinners is one thing but those 10 and 15 dinner party bill splits are social gymnastics

  • @mor_eri
    @mor_eri 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

As far as the splitting of the check, I tyoically don't go out with people that we have to split the check. Usually one of us will pay, and the next time someone else will get the check. If I am going out with someone outside of that, I will let the waitress know when ordering that the check will be separate. If the other person opposes and wants to pay, then we can have that conversation. But that's what I do.

@@zainabjohnson Exactly! I don't often have to go out with people not in that close circle, so I guess it's really not posed to me as often as it would of people who have frequent extended circles or that network often. So I get it!

With me and my guy homies, if it's 1v1 we might alternate on who pays. If it's a group we'll likely pay for our own, or somebody might pay the bill for the waiter's sake, but we not leaving until all money is venmo'd to the payer.
If it's one of my woman homies, I've learned to play it by ear. Most of them don't like guys paying for them. But I still be on the ready just in case

It’s reasonable to expect your girlfriends to pay for their food and drinks. No dividing the check equally, unless you’re all eating foods that cost approximately the same amount. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’m single and traumatized… I can’t pay for nothing lol very unreasonable that they assume. This is not a date I don’t know why you would think that a friend will pay something just because. But that’s that good old saying about assumption

Thankyou for hitting the topic Zainab. I think it is indeed an embarassment, rather than being scared. Because we have been stereotyped as alot of things. And I think what she was "scared" of , is ratchet people.

If we are treating each other it's either 1. A surprise or 2. A discussion before hand. Other than that we KNOW we got ourselves.
I would like for Hollywood to just have a variety of stories so more people can have more opportunities. But I agree with what you're saying. There are tons of gay men play straight roles.
I would need so much more context when it comes to the I'm afraid of "Hood" and/or "Ghetto" black people. I feel like she might have a very specific type of person she's thinking about.
The only time I would call someone anti black is if the were actually anti black. Like someone who seriously hates black people is anti black.

I feel it's very unreasonable to share the bill! There has 2-3 times that people in the group didn't pay their portion of the, nor the tip and I was T'd off! I'm like you, I don't order as much food or alcohol where others order more/higher ticket meals and drinks but want to split the bill!
So upon ordering I let the wait staff kno my bill is separate from the group, due to people not paying their proper portion.

As far as queer/trans roles, much like whyte ppl speaking on Black ppl issues, straight ppl simply don't possess the context or frame of reference for accurately understanding queer/lgbtq issues. That said, I believe there's a difference between roles open for diverse interpretation vs casting a role without consideration of the diversity it requires.

what do you think about this tho: if the writer identifies as queer or trans... you think the actor would miss the mark? I feel like alot of that is embedded in the character. if certain elements are not already infused in the character, a person who does not identify with them would miss the mark. or they may if they are disconnected from that community

I think its reasonable to not want to put your card down and have people zelle you…
That being said, i usually put my card down if split amongst 7-8 people its $20/ person.
Simply because I may want to do business with them down the line.
this is an easy and quick way to see their character and how they deal with money … (are they shorting me, do they send it right away, do i have to hunt them down, etc)
I mostly eat with friends that work in the business field… we eat family style meals (korean bbq, etc) and we split it evenly.
Other friends we treat eachother, i got this one, you got the next one
