Donald Byrd-isms is a new series on "All Things Brass and Technology" showcasing the teachings of the legendary Jazz Trumpeter great Donald Byrd. This will be an ongoing series discussing concepts that were taught to me dB while I was Donald Byrd's student at Queens College from 1990-1995. In this video, Professor Byrd teaches me his methodology in regards to practicing scales. Enjoy. dB
Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 - February 4, 2013) (Detroit, Michigan, US) was an American jazz and rhythm & blues trumpeter and vocalist. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was known as one of the rare bebop jazz musicians who successfully explored funk and soul while remaining a jazz artist. As a bandleader, Byrd was an influence on the early career of Herbie Hancock.

My pleasure!!
Wow, I have never been able to figure out the fast playing I hear from great improvisers. I really hope your Bird lesson helps me to get it. Thanks so much DB!
Always here to help Family. Thanks for watching. ❤️ ❤️
Great Work, you were taught by great men. As a teen In the mid 70s Donald Byrd was my favorite and listening to his music inspired me to buy a horn, I chose a Tenor Saxophone and I learned to play by listening to Grover Washington Jr. They were Great Men. It's good you're passing on what you know.
I like how you film in black and white. And of course ,the content. Peace.....
Thanks Tony, I'm always trying new Lut Filters. Glad you liked the video.
I love your thoughts on these articulation concepts! Thank you! Much respect!
Patrick, thank you do much for watching. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. dB sends Love and Respect to you ❤️
Miles is always my main influence, but when I went through a Clifford phase I got frustrated with that articulation and I tried to not listen to Clifford because I came to that same conclusion. Nobody can play exactly like Clifford Brown. Clifford was a gift from God and then I started listening to him again. I wish someone in the early 90's would have told me what Donald Byrd told you. I almost quit playing the trumpet until I saw a young Roy Hargrove on B.E.T playing and I thought Roy was younger than me, (he's 6 six years older) ha ha and I said if he can play this music, I can too. Man you are becoming the next generations guru, Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Many blessings to you.
Don I am humbled by this kind post. Im glad that you enjoyed the video and appreciate the support of me dB and the channel. I will do my best to live up to your thoughtful words. dB sends Love and Respect to you ❤️
