    This is one of my favorite videos you’ve ever uploaded. No words are needed to show how this system is clearly superior: it’s safe, has a high capacity of movements despite such a small space, doesn’t need signals, is social, and it’s fun!

      We do signal with finger and / or hand gestures and we make a short eye contact with the one coming towards you sometimes. It’s very subtile human interaction.

      @@KiriyaDea Sorry for the confusion, I was referring to traffic lights, this street needs no electronic signals, just a few yield signs. In America you almost never even see yield signs, just inferior stop signs.

    As a Dutch person this is every day reality to me but I missed it when I lived abroad and I understand the fascination foreigners have with our cycling culture.

      You're so fortunate to live there. I was in Amsterdam for a short visit last autumn and it was wonderful to see a place so friendly to cyclists. I just wish we had these facilities here in the UK.

      Hi, from the US and recently visited Amsterdam. Unfortunately, we only got to spend one day there, but it was enough time for me to fall in love with the city. Wish we could live there.

    Impressive how well and comfortably the Dutch maneuver their bikes at slow speeds! That's when the bike becomes more unstable. It's great to see a gray-haired grandmother do a track-stand!

      When you have small and light vehicles like bikes it's more efficient to just let people manage themselves because collisions are just gonna be an inconvenience. Only with fast and heavy vehicles like cars are you required to have precise coordination, regulation, and synchronisation to prevent massive traffic jams and fatal collisions.

      Sure is crowded, not a crossing I like. But it seems to go oké. But there are much more saver intersections. Rotterdam is much better then Amsterdam for bicycles.

    That's why nobody drives in Amsterdam, unless they absolutely need to (or is a tourist). You just don't want to and you are literally slower than with the bike

      Gilberto Ramirez Pinheiro when Amsterdam people ride their bikes they really don't care about other people. They ignore trafficlights on red. They ride on the wrong side of the road and they don't stop for pedestrians that try to cross the street even though it's on a so called "zebrapad". That's why I wrote they are not social on their bikes

      hellraizer44 well the damn police will now fine people that use their phones will being on the bike. I find it totally ridiculous but I guess they need more money. The fine costs 95 euros btw

      It's great they give them fines, had so many almost accidents with people using their mobiles while on the bike. Keep your eyes on the road ffs

      Sometimes we have tiny seats on the front or back of a bike. It's for bringing your kids. If you look close enough you can spot it.

    4:35, as soon as there is a little bit of a jam, cars are involved and even during this jam you can see bike traffic simply continues as if nothing happens.

    The cyclists are like a display team, matching speeds so they cross in front/behind each other without interrrupting flow. It's quite impressive to watch.
    In London most people just hurl themselves at each other and shout abuse when they have to slam on the anchors!

    Fun facts!
    The bikes with the light blue front tires are "SwapBikes" they are a bike lease company where you lease a brand new bike for like 15 euro's a month. When it breaks or gets stolen you get a replacement. It's often used by students and they are very popular. You see them in every major city nowadays.
    The bikes with the yellow and dark blue frames are called OV (public transport) bikes. You can rent them for a day at train stations (the colors are the colors of the dutch railway company). They are more often used by people on commute or day-tourists.

      Those bikes are the most overpriced pieces of shit ever, on top of that, if it gets stolen you pay €100 own risk. Read the small print. The subscription costs €200 per year, for a second hand bike. If you're Dutch, you don't want to be seen on one of those, too embarrassing.

    I have biked there for years. It's been changed over many times and there have been incident. I've seen it. . Also ppl under tram. After the lane change from tram and double car road to tram only. And the change of lane in bike for the bridge it's better. And this is recorded in good weather. With bad weather people drive faster and are less tolerant. Also the no phone rule is very effective.

    Rush hour in Amsterdam, lack of road rage, the Dutch must all have had weed for breakfast.
    Everyone gives way to trams. Might is right.

    I don’t want to ruin the video but... for people getting a wrong idea of how it is there: I cycle there on that exact same spot everyday and it’s such chaos everytime, even in the evening or early morning. I sometimes have to wait more than minutes because of the tourists, the rude car drivers or people on bikes who can’t wait for a sec and cycle there like a zigzag through everything. People here commenting that it’s respectful n stuff. True, but not all the times. People can look really gross at you or yell n stuff. or a car honks like crazy. Cycling in Amsterdam is a chaos and I personally don’t feel safe at all. I have grown in this situation so I’m used to it but I’m sweating all over when I’m at my location cuz I almost got hit by. And btw for all the tourists who want to have a nice cycling trip through Amsterdam. WE CYCLE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PINK CYCLEPATH AND DON’T RANDOMLY STOP SOMEWHERE TO LIKE CHECK YOUR PHONE OR LOOK AT THE LOCATION, IT’S SO ANNOYING.
    Oh also this video is really well recorded and I saw a lot of familiar people that’s so funny to see.

    I bike here everyday to work and from work. Especially around these times, before 09:00 and after 17:00, I have experienced a lot of dangerous situations. There is always confusion about if bikers need to stop at the zebra crossings. Of course they have too, but most don't, so the tourists also don't expect them to stop anymore. For these tourists it's then super confusing if people do stop... stuff like this. Basically every entrance on to this crossing has some issues, and not just related to the design of the intersection but also to the behavior of the bikers (mostly, people are biking too fast) and pedestrians.

      Unless there are relatively many accidents, there are no dangerous situations. This is one of those cases where navigating the intersection is stressful and requires a lot of attention of the road users, but because they are forced to pay attention and be careful accidents are actually rare. Because situations are perceived as dangerous, they actually are safe in practice.

      @@paulmertens5522 I agree that it can be a good idea to design an intersection in a way where all participants are forced to pay extra attention, good example is at Central Station in front of the ferries at IJ-zijde. I think this intersection (in the video) has the potential to ask this from people. My observation though is that many participants are either, unaware of the rules/customs plus not used to so many bikes (these are mostly the tourists), or simply ignoring the rules/customs. The latter are the Amsterdammers biking very fast, ignoring zebra crossings and not giving priority to people from the right. I haven't really seen bad accidents, but often it gets very close. I myself moved here almost a year ago and the attitude of the Amsterdammers on the bike is very different then I'm used to in Brabant.
      But thanks for sharing you perspective. I'm often complaining about this intersection at home, so its nice to be able to discuss it.

      For commuting I also go by bicycle. So many cyclists do not obey the rules of traffic that it has become second nature for motorists to give unjustified yield to cyclists in some situations. Say, as a cyclist, you are approaching a street from the left; 90% of the cars will stop for you despite them coming from the right. I used to give yield to cars coming from the right all the time, but so many people just stop anyway which results in a very confusing situation. Same for a zebra, when I give yield to pedestrians who want to cross it, they will continue to stand still until I am at a complete stop because they just do not expect cyclists to actually stop for them, because every cyclist ignores zebras. This also creates a very confusing situation and the undecidedness (who goes first now?) of both participants makes it much longer than it should be.
      Which is also reasonable I guess; then the cyclist doesn’t have to decelerate, wait for them to cross, and accelerate.

      @@StanSyfert This intersection also feels a bit dangerous to me, and it's not one of my favorite intersections to cross. But I am always very careful here and I think most people are, even if they do not always observe the rules. Often I will not yield to pedestrians at the crossing if they give the impression of hesitating; in that case I can clear the intersection more quickly (and I think also more safely) by just continuing. If people pay close attention, and traffic moves relatively slowly (which both happen here) I think that will prevent accidents even if people break the rules. On this particular intersection it can get so busy that I honestly think if people followed every rule to the letter it would not become safer; negotiating as you roll, slowing down and cycling around somebody rather than coming to a full stop, quickly ducking in to give space to somebody who is in a tight spot, I think that works more smoothly than doing everything by the book. The trick is people need to pay attention and be respectful.

    Truly a beautiful sight to behold. Of course it is known that Amsterdam is not the best in terms of bike infra in NL (and this intersection certainly has some flaws - cars and bikes are stuck on tram tracks because of yield sign?), but still just the sheer numbers and interactions are amazing. It would only have been made more beautiful if there were no cars hehe :-)
    Also, it's funny how you can always tell the tourists - they just don't know how to cross a bike path! :-P

    Now that cargo bikes become more and more popular - are the cyclepaths in these big cities wide enough (with all the other cycling traffic going on at the same time)?

      Nope. It's a problem here. Cycle path width hasn't kept up with the increase in popularity. Hence why the scooters are now banned of the cycle path in the dense central area. Cycle paths get widened as streets get renewed and car the amount of car space is reduced. The street in the picture is already traffic calmed for motor traffic (that's why this intersection looks so weird, cars have limited turning options), but still the space is largely allocated to the few cars that sometimes come there. That's why it's planned to become a cycle street (with a mini cycling roundabout at this location). A whole series of streets is being converted: www.amsterdam.nl/projecten/project-binnenring/ If you want to know what that might look like you have to google 'Sarphatistraat fietsstraat'.

      @Roosje Keizer yes, that is true. Probably it is one of the reasons why the Dutch government has decided to electrify inner city transport within less than a decade. You can see it coming on the back of recent decisions, wouldn't be surprised if my hometown of Eindhoven will be car free zone within the ring road, all it would need is electric vehicles to service businesses within that area together with people transport where bikes will be the main people mover and electric busses and taxis for those who suffer from disability.

      Many two weeled cargo bikes (as opposed to trikes) are no wider than a standard handle bar, around 65-70 cm. Those look bulky but there's no problem...

    Het is wel heel irritant als je vanaf het Weteringcircuit richting Leidseplein fietst en auto's en fietsers van rechts, Spiegelgracht, je geen voorrang geven.

      @Will Reply Nee, hier niet. De stoep aan de spiegelgrachtkant van het weteringscircuit loopt continue door. Dat maakt die straat een uit/inrit, en die moeten aan iedereen voorrang geven waaronder ook fietsers. Daarnaast staan er ook gewoon nog haaientanden op de weg, wat het allemaal nog simpeler maakt. Hoop niet dat jij je rijbewijs hebt :P

    In Nedherland people also use “city” bikes in countryside? I mean for longer trips or bike trips about 20km and more? Or they using other types of bikes for example MTB or trekking? Because I see typical dutch bikes. :)

      Bikes are used for short trips within a city. For long trips over 10km they use public transportation.

      It depends. Almost all the children go to school with their bikes also in high school. There the max is I think 10 or 15 km. And besides that for longer trips we just use cars or public transportation. So we grab our bikes a lot but if we’re lazy we just take the car or something.

      Aveme Ends There are signs posted. See for example 4:23. And those shark teeth would only add to the complexity of the crossing. Those bikers are an unruly bunch and the city council has decided that they’re as easy to deal with as herding cats. 😀

      The rules for having right of way is the same as for car drivers. But the fact a bike path is red is no indication of having right of way. A red path is just a bike path.

      @melek the tram has priority unless there is a traffic light, road markings/signs or a traffic agent. For a striped pedestrian crossing it has to give way (see 4:03). In this junction they made it a priority junction for the tram ( see the triangular paint markings on the road and the triangular traffic sign. ) , but not for the cycle path...

      I felt the same way last June when I visited Haarlem. In California where I live, I ride 30 miles a day. Seeing all those bikes moving seamlessly was amazing, and I didn't feel confident enough to jump in.

      Most of these people grew up in this environment and are used to the bikes. Even if you haven't it's amazing how quick you adapt.
      The NYC subway map looks pretty daunting when you first arrive, but it wont take you long to get efficiently anywhere in the city when you get used to it.

      It's controlled chaos, to an outsider it looks crazy and appears to not have any rules or method behind it, but to a local it's the easiest thing in the world, everyone knows the rules and knows how to behave and what is expected, thus it works nearly perfect.

      That shouldn't be the case. It's even illegal to not have them. Those bikes probably have back-pedal brakes, it's very common here.

      There are brakes. But you use them by paddeling back instead of using your hands. Most tourist and children bicycles have them. We call it "terugtraprem" (backpaddlebrake).

      They are within the ring and a few exceptions. You don't see any on the red cycle path in the video. There's a guy at the end not wearing a helmet and that's also illegal now

      @@philmander This video is from before the ban. (Or more accurately, after the ban but before it was enforced). However, even now while it's enforced, that doesn't mean that you won't find scooters on the bike lanes.

    I wonder how many words are exchanged in anger or otherwise when people don't behave properly and create dangerous situations. I don't hear any shouting, but maybe we just don't hear it.

      It happens, but people tend to be nicer when they're not in cars. For example people cut the queue all the time in their car to get to the front, but that almost never happens at the checkout in the supermarket. When you're on foot you're Nick from down the block, in your car you're just another Honda civic.

      There's no need to shout. The only dangerous situation is created by the white van at the end, who must stop and let the tram pass. At 2:18 there's a minor situation with a zombie on the zebra crossing, watching their phone, instead of traffic. He gets a wake up call from a cycle bell. He and the lady at 2:48 suddenly stop walking, which is unexpected and thus a disturbance. Normally you eyeball speeds, slow down a few steps and walk right through. The next cyclist can easily move over to the left and ride behind them without slowing down.

      @@borismarkov1141 I feel like people on bicycles are somehow less in a hurry than a lot of car drivers. That might affect their temper as well. As you suggested, being face to face instead of have two cars between you helps as well probably.
      Things do go wrong though ofcourse. I've never really seen a huge crash though. How could there be one? You're only doing maybe 5-10km/h on these bits.

      Well you have mentally ill people in every country. I once had an elderly "gentleman" stalk me on a bike screaming at me trying to pull me off my bike by force cause I didn't give him the right of way. I didn't give him the right of way cause he didn't have it...and he didn't even had to slow down to let me pass I just sped up a bit thats all. But mister asshole felt like I didn't show him the proper respect and he was used to the world revolving around him so that justified threats and physical violence to him. So mentally ill people you'll find in any country. But I rather have a mentally ill asshole come after me on a bike then in a car....I can outcycle an old guy on a bike....I can't outdrive a car. And if that mental patient had road rage as well....he would have killed me.

    This video does not capture how awful the traffic in amsterdam is most of the time.
    Bicycles are maybe a healthy way of transportation, but Amsterdam is not a bicycle heaven, it's a big mess, with still, lots of cars.
    If you really want to experience bicycle heaven, go make a trip through the whole country, and stay out of amsterdam...
    the rest of the netherlands is far more enjoyable to ride through.

    Officially when people make a turn they have to stick out their arm to indicate they are either going left or right. So many in this video seem to forget this basic but fundamental rule.

      @@hgjhgjhgification umm....yeah, but they are not driving in a cycle lane!!! All freight traffic has to be out of amsrerdam central by 09.00 each day, so very limited for trucks, busses are few as the main form of p.t. is trams, so you have a limited argument at best.

    Despite the large amount of people riding bicycles over here (there are approx. 22,5 million bicycles for 17 million + inhabitants in The Netherlands) the air pollution concentration in The Netherlands and Belgium is very high (see map below) compared to other parts of Europe. I live in a bordering city next to The Hague (close to the sea), scientific air quality measurements were, after Rotterdam, the 2nd worst of the country mid 2016. An equivalent of 6.6 cigarettes per day inhaled by all inhabitants of all ages without smoking. It's crystal clear that despite all our efforts we still need to make some serious and more drastic changes to seriously improve on our environmental air quality.

      Misleading information. They place those sensors near the most busy areas, that doesn't mean the whole country is like that...... And the air inside an office building is much much more polluted !!! Any idea how dangerous an office printer/copy station is ?!

      ​@@taerial879 Law liability triggers behaviour as well.. In a car-to-bike accident the burden is on the car driver. He has to prove that the bike is at fault otherwise he is considered guilty. Moreover, even if the biker is at guilt the car driver can only claim 50% of the damage on the cyclists insurance policy (with exception maybe extreme careless behaviour of cyclist). The Dutch law consider that a car driver has to be extra careful towards weaker traffic participants. With this kind of financial risk (most people don't have an all risk car insurance ) chauffeurs drive more careful than otherwise ..

    1. relatively quiet moment of the day.2. i've seen a total of two cyclists who pointed direction.3.holding a cellphone can cost you 95 euro's these days..and overall people in traffic are far from nice people usually don't give way nor pay attention .or point way...accidents are very often made
