Bill Deere, director of the Washington office of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), discusses the ongoing situation with the agency in Gaza.

www.unrwa.org/
Bill Deere briefly walks through the recent allegations of UNRWA involvement in 10/7, including Israel’s refusal to provide UNRWA with the actual proof, UNRWA’s decision to nonetheless fire those allegedly involved, and the international community’s revocation of funding in response, before touching on the devastating impact of that funding, and the ongoing attempts to keep UNRWA operating. Wrapping up, Deere explores the work UNRWA does with the Biden Administration, and what those of us outside of Government and NGOs can do to help.

The fact that the logo was seemingly directly hit shows what they think of the rest of the world.
Rather emblematic, isn’t it?
firing the employees based on allegations without investigation was like a shot in the foot and was not the right decision
Yeah, appeasement doesn't work.
I get the instinct of wanting to prioritize the protection of the institution over due diligence, given that millions of people's lives depend on UNRWA having good relations with all sides. Only in hindsight, it would have been more prudent to take a stand instead of appeasing the accusers!
It only show how easy it is to fire people today without any evidence.
What UNRWA did by taking this action was to more or less confirm accusations which in turn where used by donor countries to suspend money transfer (which is very much tied to that the same countries that did suspend also have Governments and that already want to suspend all kind of founding of humanitarian aid going to other countries - not only UNRWA, but also through other NGOs and institutions working in the field of humanitarian aid), so this chain of action where very much in play from those right wing Governments which now had an excuse to stop founding instead of waiting for documentation and confirmation that accusation had some real evidence to support it.
At least from Sweden it seems that our Government will start to send money now and some more as the pressure have increased to increase humanitarian aid for Gaza and its region where UNRWA operates.

Nah, UNRWA should have gone decades ago.
Yep. "Zero tolerance" of liars is better than zero tolerance for anyone accused by liars.
Israel's accusations are UNWRAvelling.
Underrated comment
Good interview...interesting, informative, and helpful. Seems like UNRWA has been acting in good faith and Israel is not.
fascist government don't act in good faith ? i'm shocked !
Truth. 💔🇵🇸
They never do. Pure evil.

The pure cruelty and dissembling has been astonishing. Of course considering they were behind the neoconservative foreign policy agenda that got us involved in the War on Terror and invasion of Iraq and all the lies that supported that debacle, it’s not surprising.
Good for you for staying on this.
If you feel the need to investigate an agency providing vital aid to embattled civilians you do it whilst maintaining support. To do that during a crisis can only be read in one way I am sorry to say.... theres no other way to read it... you think those people are worthless.
Israel has been making these claims for years. Only now, people are listening.
Thanks for the interview
I feel like the whole UNWRA situation illustrates the nature of how appealing to the systems of a supposed "rules-based order" falls absolutely flat in a political contest. UNWRA trips over themselves to eliminate all risk of being smeared with this, and it just looks like an admission of guilt. There are no steps UNWRA could have taken to prevent the Israel lobby from picking up these allegations and running with them. All they could do is put up a strong front against the political attacks on the agency, which is something that they failed to do. Caving to Israeli smears and launching an independent investigation on UNWRA on the basis of these 100% baseless claims weakens the appearance of the agency in a time that they need to be bold. Opportunistic hacks don't care about any good faith appearance of propriety, they just smell blood in the water and attack.
7:40 - UNRWA funding cuts and how they affect Gaza
Israel will never be able to recover their reputation
Too many confused the Bible and Jesus and the facts the founders or Israel came from Europe and North America, so they had to believe in good things. Well, Nazi Germany came from the West and that area was the 19th century birthplace (Austria-germany) of Zionism. Israel has massively damaged its reputation in much of the world.
Never.
Are you joking!? Israeli reputation for disinformation is legendary, never heard of 'Hasbara'?😊
Doesn't matter
Time for a summer of 1776 type convention, for the U.S. to declare independence from Israel.
Israel moved their military away from the wall next to Gaza to allow the attack by Hamas to succeed. The Israeli government moved the military to the West Bank so they would not be able to respond in a timely manner, giving Hamas the time to do what they did. Had the Israeli military been where it normally was, the attack by Hamas would have been stopped, and Hamas would have been slaughtered. But that wouldn't have given Netanyahu the excuse to start this "war", so they allowed Hamas to kill Israelis. The Israeli government is complicit in what happened on October 7th.
They were in the west bank because at the time they were displacing palestinian families, it was normal routine for them. They always defend the colonists while kicking the families out of their homes.
Regarding the Hamas attack, it was that movement of troops what gave Hamas the chance to attack. They knew they were elsewhere so they attacked.
Entirely possible. The month before the attacks Netanyahu proposed to the UN Israel's intent to annex all of Palestine, so he could have been trying to instigate a preemptive strike from Hamas to gain popular support for the full scale invasion. The high level of friendly fire on Israel's side and the immediate release of fraudulent horror stories about Hamas also suggest a premeditated intent to make Oct.7th as horrific as possible.
@@JARV9701 I find it hard to believe that Israel doesn't have several artillery batteries situated near the Gaza wall. These batteries would be pre-ranged on the wall, and a few spotters calling in coordinates to the artillery would have gutted the attack by Hamas as it breached the wall. Although Israel moved their troops to "help" the "settlers" (land thieves) in the West Bank, artillery is relatively immobile, and of no use in "helping" the "setters" in the West Bank. Why didn't the Israeli artillery respond?
@@ihatetoshiba it actually responded, there was a report a few months ago that stated that the IDF may have actually be responsable for several buildings destroyed back then, because they started shelling houses where they though Hamas members were hiding. The reason this is believed it's because the damage ln the buildings doesn't correspondi to grenades or rocket launches, but HE shells, which, how we have seen, Israel is very happy to use with discretion.
Damned sus, ain’t it?

By firing them without investigation, it appears you found them guilty. So the countries acted on that, right? Pretty weak.

What Craig said. They knew it was probably BS, but they did it to try to save the organization. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

I find it disconcerting that Sam Seder's Minority Report spends so much energy complaining about things their 'Blue No Matter Who' advocacy helped bring into being.
Maybe if they spend more time advocating for candidates they actually believed in instead of their failed litmus test of Democratic allegiance maybe things wouldn't keep going from bad to worse.
Be helpful if the other side could select a candidate that’s not an insurrectionist, that way we can start discussing ideas, and not have to vote just to protect our ability to vote.
Vote blue no matter who, because America isn't a democracy
MR advocated tirelessly for Bernie Sanders as well as other progressives. What are you on about?!
@@edc1569 You're missing the point.
Sure, Trump supported an insurrection (which is why you shouldn't vote for him. He's terrible).
That being said the Democrats are just as terrible, though in slightly different ways (I don't think I need to remind you that Joe Biden and the Democrats are supplying the weapons that are being used to perpetuate a genocide, among other terrible policies).
If I were to say you should vote for someone that, for example, admits to selling drugs that not only resulted in the deaths of thousands of people but they admit to do doing so, you'd probably wonder wtf was wrong with me.
Well, that's Joe Biden, except MUCH, MUCH worse.
So unless you're willing to sign off on what he does, you don't owe him your vote.
And I don't care about Trump, if he were to win the Presidency. Do you know why? Because policy-wise he's no different than Biden though Trump is fairly uncouth, and typically says the parts you aren't supposed to hear out loud (because he's an idiot).
Though there's another important difference between the two that I think a lot of people are deliberately ignoring, namely Trump can be swayed by public opinion because he actually wants people to like him.
Biden doesn't give a damn. I don't know if that's because he's a genuine bastard or because he's sundowning but at the end of the day the reasons are academic.
@@screenPhiles I mean that’s fair. Well said
Why are the Arab countries not filling the financial gap?

Why shouldn't the countries that have pledged keep giving what they have done
Many of Palestine's neighbors have already taken in millions of refugees and are recipients of UNRWA aid themselves. They don't have the means to compensate for the world's superpowers.
Why is Israel getting free money from every western country ????

UNRWA is acrime against humanity.
The real issue with these orgs, they create a society of entitled people.. They do not take this aid to create a society, they take this aid as a freebie and continue on doing nothing to help themselves.. Which is the reason why if UNRWA pulls out, everything falls down, they have done nothing in 75 years, to benefit themselves, constantly waiting for another handout..
The Palestinian people have lived either under a brutal occupation or in refugee camps, denied access to their own resources in order that Israel can exert full control over them. In Gaza 2.2m people live in a strip of land 25 miles by 5 miles, there is no agricultural technology that could provide food for so many people on such little land. The water sources are controlled by Israel and when Palestinians have attempted to build their own power stations Israel has bombed them. Israel has a policy of “mowing the lawn” in Gaza, intermittently bombing Gaza to make life even harder, whilst Israeli settlers continue to steal Palestinian land in The West Bank, aided and abetted by the IDF and Israeli police. If there was no aid they would starve to death.
Yeah but you know, its the bag of rice they occasionally get that really ruined thier society.

Hamas's hiding behind women and children has caused so much suffering.
