I found this video very helpful and also like the fact you post videos not only on fishing but on tackle etc. I have been using Sumo hooks for about 8 years for my fishing in Thailand and have found them to be the best hooks available here. I have used them from size 10 up to 19 although the bigger sizes are heavier than other hooks in this size range. I have landed many big fish on Sumo hooks and they have not let me down. They are amazingly cheap and buying them in bulk means you always have the size you want at the time needed and at a much cheaper cost than alternatives. Thanks for confirming my experiences
Thank you. I found it interesting also and Sumo was a big surprise, i didn't expect much at all and they ended up being the strongest. The Mustad hooks where also a big surprise but for the wrong reasons.
Another good helpful video, I bought some Mustad when I couldn't get anymore Gamakatsu in the size I wanted thinking they're probably not much difference. Dissapointed to find out they are quite inconsistent in strength and are in the lower strength brackets. Will have to go for Gamakatsu or Sumo in future.
I also brought the Mustad because finding Gamakatsu was proving difficult, believing an international branded hook would have been a close replacement. Had a few of then break in quick succession on relatively small fish and it was this that made me start thinking about testing hooks. I couldn't find much of hook tests on TH-cam so thought "hey if i am interested maybe others will be also". I wont be using Mustad any more I removed them all from my tackle box.
@@BlackMamba-lt8oe I cant say as i never tested mustad jigheads. The only hooks i tested where shown in the video. I have to say after seeing Mustad not preforming the way i would expect i would be cautious about using this brand for any of my hooks.
The owner hooks at least here in the states are hard to beat. Been using owner ssw cutting point for awhile and have never failed where other brands have straightened or broke
@@dylanclay2741 Hi I don't think we should be looking at this as a reflection of a brand as most brands have several different hooks in there range. This is more a test of these particular hook models vs each other. Keeping in mind this is what's available in the stores here in Bangkok Thailand. I would hope Mustad and owner have stronger hooks available they just don't make it to this part of the world.
There is an one line store names Lazada that sell them. Lazada operates in many south east Asian country's but if you are in the UK or USA i don't know if they operate there.
Yes there a strong hook but also a thick gauge hook. If I get around to testing what they call live bait hooks, the thicker gauge hooks that would be on the list for sure. I was trying to keep all these hooks at comparable gauges of thickness. Keep in mind the live bait hooks will blunt faster and its harder to set the hook due to how thick they are. :)
@@Fishinginbangkok I am not talking about live bait hook. I know those hook are thick. I am referring to octopus beak hook. So far, the strongest hook will break instead of bend are owner and hayabusa. Under high load, those brand hook will only bend slightly before it break at a higher load.
@@seanleau I don't believe the Octopus hooks are available in Thailand. I have not seen them for sale and a quick search of a few sopping apps doesn't show any. Are you in Thailand? do you know where you can get them? I would be interested to try. I can only see the live bait hooks available.

Thanks a lot for a very practical test. That is the right strength test when you put pressure on the tip of hook at that holding angle.
Respect your passion. I couldn't get much information about tackle in thailand. I'm sad cuz i already bought much Mustad hook lol..
Better to know and not loose that fish of a lifetime.

A very interesting good video.
I expected more from the owner hooks.
Very educational, thank you for that.

Nice homemade tensile tester and clever grips (your) 1 mm washer
Excellent video, thanks 👍🏻
Hey mate what size in UK hooks is a Thai 14?
Hi a UK size 2 is about the same as a Thai size 12-13 hook. If a Thai says a hook is size 13 that means the hook has a 13mm gape. Hope that helps.
Very informative video, Sumo hooks seem great. Do you any online stores that sell them?

You should test Hayabusa Hooks. it's the strongest hook i ever come a cross.
