I love history, old photos, and genealogy. I have photos of my grandfather from the early 1900s; one standing next to his Harley Davidson motorcycle with my grandmother. Another working a steam wood mill, and another running a road roller in 1913 building the road to the future site of William Randolph Hurst's castle in San Simeon, California. --- My grandfather's family on my mothers side came from the Norwish, England area. He got in trouble for "polluting the Queens waters" because he threw a bunch of hemp stalk in the river (old time pot farmer :>. He owned a ship and in the mid 1700's sailed to America and landed in Pennsylvania. He didn't get along well with the Mennonites there so sailed up to the New Jersey area and bought land from the Native Americans. Funny thing is that part of the family eventually mixed with my dad's side of the family, who were Mennonites from Switzerland who bought land from William Penn and settled in Pennsylvania.

Wonderful love the history lesson and from the look on your dad's face i think he enjoyed it to. It's interesting how old things become new again. you mentioned how the buildings were set up facing south that's simply solar heating. I also remember in the states you could tell who was in charge in the family. If the man was boss the buildings were set in the center of the farm so it was easier for the horses if the woman was in charge it would be next to the road so she could visit with travelers. Thanks so much for the fireside chat stay safe and warm

    Hey there Joanna!
This was a wonderful video, thank you for sharing it. It was great to see Farmer John as a young lad and a young man. I would imagine with all of the grain your granddad was growing that during World War II most of his farming efforts were directed toward growing grain and milk production?
Now don’t needle your Dad too hard about how progressive he is or is not. It was only earlier this year he had to breakout and old set of scales that kept Dale Farm moving forward with sheep feeding during the first lockdown.
I am not saying that all progressive new and improved ideas are bad, but a fair lot of them fail to match their billing. And when a new generation, not familiar with the old ways, find themselves in a pickle because of technology failure they are nothing more than a dead ship in the water.
You mentioned, and have shown, your Granny Peg in an earlier video is she still with you in town?

Hey Bill, glad you enjoyed the video. Dad isn’t very progressive , he knows that , it was a little joke... we say he hates change and he fully admits he does! I accept he is how he is ❤️
my granny died a few years ago! She lived to be 90 ❤️

Right enjoyed that! Always interesting seeing how a farm was and how it’s progressed. We keep being given/sent pics of the estate from years back. Always fun trying to work out what’s still there or changed 😁. How come the farm stopped growing fodder?? X

    • @DaleFarm
      @DaleFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey - glad you enjoyed it ... I don’t know why the changes...my grandad Jim must have increased the milking herd , and my dad followed that x

@@DaleFarm you’ll have to try and get your dad to sit down and film some of the farm stories from the past. They’d be interesting to listen to x

Joanna do you know what the registration number was of your old series 1 Land Rover, I could do a search on the Series one Land Rover club members section to see if there is any mention of it if it has survived.

I mailed a package to you on 11/9/20 from the USA. You should have it by now. You may need to check with your postal office, as items I've mailed to the UK before end up being held there and not delivered to other people in the UK. I sent you an email about this, too, and did not get a reply.

I have been blessed to work with two Blue Roan Milking Shorthorn cows.
I wonder if they were related to the Blue Albion cattle?

That was lovely. Really good to hear a little of the family farm history. I wonder if your father ever listened to ‘On Your Farm’ on R4? My late father in law Anthony Parkin produced and presented it for 25 years. There’s a slightly fuzzy recording of one the programmes in 1984, via this link. Keep up the great work, Jo. Oh, and your dad, of course! sustainablefoodtrust.org/articles/on-your-farm/

There are some BBC4 "On Your Farm" episodes on archive.org, but they are from 2016 and 2017. Is this the same show?

I’m not sure. Dad loves to watch farming tv series - anything on our usual channels we only have 1-5 here ... not cable x

I haven't owned a television the last 11 years. I used to be able to receive 4 or 5 stations till they went digital in 2009. Then I could "barely" pick up 1 station, sometimes. There's no cable here, only satellite dish, and I'm not going to pay $50 or $100 (no idea how much it cost really) for bits of horrible tv shows sandwiched between advertisements. I get inundated with enough advertisements here on the internet, and have to pay for that privilege. I'm not going to pay to be inundated with ads for products I have no interest in on television too. --- A friend in England, a well known sound engineer, has a very old analog television he uses to play ancient video games on. He has no TV aerial on his house or even rabbit ears on the television. Every year the authorities come to his house and try to extort him for TV tax.
