This was one of my favorite issues of Mister Miracle. Knowing the hidden meaning behind the story makes it that much more fun.

Houseroy will forever be the absolute SICKEST burn. Insert my usual spiel people needing to know the real Stan Lee, the Funkyflashman Stan Lee. Flawed and fascinating, not just the dottering grandpa people know from the movies.

The classic New York wheeler-dealer! Love him, hate him; indispensible and indefensible, Stan "the Man".

Kirby's quirkiness, including his sense of humor, is a big part of why he had ideas nobody else had, and it really works here. Plus the art is so damn beautiful at this point; it may not be possible to match Kirby, especially at his zenith, but Royer is running hard, and managing to keep up.

But Kirby did return to Marvel after this and in 1975 Stan and Jack sat next to each other at the convention they attended in Miami, Florida. Roy Thomas (aka Houseroy) remained more annoyed about this comic than Stan was.

That bust is neither Martin Goodman or Vince Colleta. It's Jack. He is taking cash out of the mouth of Jack's bust.

TH-cam just threw this up, an algorithm from somewhere - I grew up with Kirby more so with DC than Marvel and always admired his work, but I can’t say which I enjoyed more. Your spot on rendition of Stan Lee, or the whole story behind him in this issue, wonderful stuff, subscribed, and shared

The thumbnail says burned his bridges at marvel
Kirby obviously did not burn his bridges at marvel
For it was after the publishing of this comic book that stan hired kirby back
Doesn't seem like stan was that upset by being called funky flashman
But from listening to interviews, it sounds like Roy. Thomas was very upset with being called houseboy.

I wonder if anyone got Stan Lee to sign this issue

I always thought the statue head on the first splash page was supposed to resemble Kirby. Lee takes his weekly money from Kirby's mouth, without having to work for it, just as he took the pay and credit for Kirby's 60s Marvel stories and creations.

That is totally it, taking money/food from Kirby's mouth.

I got this issue sometime in the 80s, I really liked it but didn’t know it was a parody of Stan Lee and Roy Thomas until I was reading a Jack Kirby collector mag that went into detail about Jack’s frustration at Marvel.😂

Funnily enough Stan did adopt a weird kind of safari suit look throughout the 70s and 80s

I must've owned that issue as a kid because although I don't remember the actual issue and story that well, I clearly remember the Funky Flashman character and remember seeing him when I was a kid. At the time I had no idea it was a parody of Stan but somehow this character stayed in my conscious.

    1. The stone money dispenser is Kirby: look at the likeness; although your observation, Tom, that it is Colletta is amusing. It's Jack's satire: "Stan Lee" on pg2 is literally (and figuratively) taking money from "Kirby's" mouth. 2. As @egattignolo said, mockingbirds copy the songs of other birds. The M.O. of Marvel Comics in the 40s/50s was to copy whatever trend was selling, whether spandex heroes, crime, romance or horror: "hatch, match & dispatch".

The fact that Stan "forgave" Jack for Funky Flashman and welcomed him back to Marvel shows just how vital Kirby was to marvel. Also , anyone notice the page 2 interaction between Flashman and Thomas is spot on to Montgomery Burns and Smithers? Wonder if Groenig was influenced by the King of Comics?

Will marvel did pretty well after kirby left
It doesn't seem like stan had to hire him back because of desperation
Stan always talked about what a great artist kirby was
Most people don't like to admit that
But stan did a lot of praising of his artists
I think stan hired him back because stan like having the best talent working for him
