  • The new Custom Shader Patch beta version FINALLY fixes the major physics glitch which resulted in large tracks having vibrating cars, or poor force feedback response. Where better to experience this than the Wicklow Mountain course in the amazing Mini Cooper by Pessio? Is there a better match than this?

    That transmission whine is pretty accurate from my memories of learning to drive in my fathers early 70's Mini pickup.

      @edteach3r 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I agree! I used to drive a 1968 Mini on a daily basis for two years (1978-1979) with that characteristic whine when lifting your foot from the accelerator.

      @stuartliddle7228 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@edteach3r I would have to agree also. Had a 1965 "woodie" in the early 90s; pillar box red..... wish i had it still, it would be fast and very silly and probably not sound the same now!

      I second this. The cheapish cars In that era had the transmission whine very distinctly playing a second violin to the motor. It's been many, many years that I've been in a original Mini, so I can't authenticate the motor sound.

    I've driven these roads... I lived in Dublin back in 2008 - 2010. When you stopped at the crossroad, the road ahead would take you to a little country pub called the Jonnie Fox's Pub. I used to often go for a drive there. The lake you passed looking down to the right is called Lough Tay I think. I really enjoyed watching you drive this mate. 😎👍

    • @anthonymurray3550
      @anthonymurray3550 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually, it looks correct. It's the sign on the right as you reach the crossroad is incorrect. Should read Glandalough and Laragh instead of Roundwood / Bray which is the right turn. I used to hammer these roads taking racing lines in an old Ford Fiesta thinking it would be perfect as a rally circuit. Now I can again! :)

    • @anthonymurray3550
      @anthonymurray3550 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Felipe Maciel OK, it's extremely accurate. I bought a Fiat Brava for a few hundred quid and again was hammering it over the mountains. Coming up to the bridge at 20:02 the front brakes exploded and I eventually brought it to a halt using the gears and pulled in to the little lay by at 20:07. :)

    • @anthonymurray3550
      @anthonymurray3550 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Felipe Maciel Just watched the rest of the clip there and it's impressively accurate. I had a few scary moments in cars over those mountains. It helps bring the unusual, the antiquated and the mundane about the automotive world into focus in a way that helps people learn about locations on distant parts of the world or a time long passed that wouldn't be possible in reality, and allows people to embrace them far closer than any traditional medium.

    Thanks for posting this. My first car was a 1970 Mini 1275GT, not too far removed from this model (not as exotic though). I grew up in South Devon, similar countryside to Ireland. I can tell you there would be a lot more livestock wandering around this road!
    As far as I can remember the sound of the car isn't too unrealistic. Can't remember if my car had it but certainly early Minis had straight cut gears which were noisy. Also surprisingly spacious, I had a good 6" headroom above my head. Such a riot to drive. You're right, the perfect car for this landscape. Not silly fast but very responsive and grippy, safe handling.
    Now all the mod community needs to do is pipe in some oil and exhaust fumes for that true Mini experience!

    FWIW: That Mini looks and sounds pretty accurate to me. The off-power transmission whine is about right - God help you if it had been modelled with a strait cut box! Engine sound pretty spot on too, if I had to really nit-pick maybe it could be a tiny bit tinnier?
    Everyone who has ever owned a *real* Mini loves them and I can absolutely recommend getting one of you can. The 'good' news is because BL did almost nothing the update or develop the car they all sound and drive much the same, any model will do you. Even better they only develop character with age and are very easy to work on so even a knackered one is a fair purchase. The only models to stay away from are the 1100's with their very weak bottom end. Also they all rust like they were built in Italy so expect to do some welding - full new shells and all other parts are available. You'll only notice how much better a Cooper is if you race it.
    My pick? Either an 850 / 998 - revvy and not too slow, or a 1275GT - the cheapest of the 'fast' mini's. The latest's Rover Mini's are also fine and maybe a tiny bit more, um, refined but as a result have a smidge less charm - a better choice as a daily driver.
    BMW Mini..? Nothing wrong with it but absolutely not the car to buy if you want a *real* Mini, not the same at all!
    IMO: The only car that can match or exceed any classic Mini for driving fun is a well sorted Hillman Imp / Sunbeam Stiletto - rare as hen's teeth and a death trap unless properly set up. Honestly, to anyone who has a genuine interest in getting a *proper* Mini I'd say go for it. As long as you are willing to get your hands dirty you won't be disappointed.

    Driven a bunch of Minis and the gear whine is pretty authentic. The overall sound isn't too bad... maybe a bit too raspy... but it isn't anything that detracts from the experience. Also, they're remarkably roomy, even for lanky blokes like me. Great mod, great video. Thanks for making it!

  • @fredscratchet1355
    @fredscratchet1355 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jake every Mini I drove had that whine. What didn't sound right to me was that throaty exhaust roar although back in the day there was quite a mod scene with Mini's and Peco loud exhausts were very popular but didn't sound like that. They actually had quite a bark and sounded really nice exiting under the centre of the rear bumber. Sometimes people would fit Weber carbs and there was some intake roar with those.
    The handling was excellent and many other cars were not a patch on the Mini, they were the standard everyone aimed for, in comparison the Ford Anglia was truly terrifying! The brakes were drums on the base car so not brilliant but surprisingly not too bad. Once again doing an emergency stop in a Ford Anglia was a near death experience with the car taking all control out of you hands! Clarkson tested one on Top Gear once and he said it was the most frightening thing he had ever done. I think the Cooper models had disk brakes up front.
    Top speed on the base model was about 75-ish if you were lucky, they varied tremendously depending on quality control. I did a few weeks casual work in the school holidays at Longbridge and one day had to count a load of camshafts from one bin to another. They all had the same part number yet some looked like full race while others looked really soft. Obviously from different machines. Cooper's were a bit faster at about 80-85 and I think the S 1275 model was over 90. I will be corrected if wrong.
    The Mini was quite uncomfortable with a very joggly crashy ride and because of the small size yes your head was in the roof and your knees around your elbows haha. Another mod was to lower the steering column a couple of inches and fit a small steering wheel, then move the drivers seat backwards or even fit Recaro style seats. I see these days Honda or Nissan twin cam engines are a popular mod which then makes them silly fast.

But in 2011 I went to Ireland and decided to drive my rental car up the west coast from Cork up north. Always sleeping either in a Bed & Breakfast (lovely people) or the car. Some day I was in the middle of nowhere with a road that really looked like a rough rally track and I thought oh damn this will be a 30 max. 50 km/h street but then I saw the speed sign and it said 80 XD. I love the Irish.

    First thing that struck me was that the sound is not right. The gearbox whine is pretty authentic but the exhaust note should not be that of a V8! It should be higher pitched and rasping - more like a big motor bike. I speak from experience, having had Minis back in the 70s. Other than that this is very impressive.

    If you drive a proper old-school Mini on those sorts of roads you will certainly bang your head on the roof if you go over bumps at any kind of speed. Makes your teeth rattle. The whining noise is possibly modeled from the transfer gears and definitely if the car is fitted with a straight-cut box. It sounds very familiar to me. Having driven a few souped-up Minis in this manner the video seems pretty darned authentic. I am seriously tempted to buy in at this point. Thanks, that was lots of fun to watch.

Or space simming...Your spatial awareness takes a leap because you can actually turn and move your head to see where exactly the door from the car next to you is....or in dogfighting following your target, seeing the situation is so much better in vr. And that makes for great close racing.. Also the sense of scale in general but in space sims in particular. (Never though stuff was actually that big in game from a flat screen until I was on a space-station in Elite in VR for the first time Holy crap these things are big.
    And AC has very good performance in VR (compared to ACC for instance) I can get a lot better resolution. with stable 80fps than any other games I play in VR That means I still have a rather pretty picture in vr. ... The only downside in AC since it wasn't actually build for VR is that you still have to mouse your way through the menu's.

    As I was watching, before you spoke of the sounds, I thought that it sounded pretty close to my mates hot mini, all induction noise and gearbox chime

    The whine's correct, it's exactly like an A-Series gearbox sounds, the engine/exhaust note is a little too low but it's surprisingly close to the real thing :)

    Very nice calm video and nice intro. I think I'll have to subscribe. Btw I have a content manager and I am a patreon, bet is there a simple way to install the preview builds? The drag and drop method doesn't work for me.

    The original mini was about 10ft long from what I remember, weight was about 1200-1300lb.
    The reason for the weird steering wheel angle was because the car had a rack and pinion steering rack which was about where your feet were and the steering wheel shaft was between your feet just above your toes.

    I love Assetto Corsa because I love tinkering and messing around and modifying cars that I don’t have the money to do in real life. It stays relevant because it’s developed further by the incredible mod community! Content Manager for example and CSP really opened it up to a lot of development possibility

    Have you driven High Force or Glenn Shiel?
    Actually, the latter of those two aforementioned kind of gives me hope that a true Mille Miglia course can become possible, since you mentioned great, large circuits of the past there at the end.
    Fat-Alfie is working on Inselsberg/Tabarz and Mugello Stradale at present, as examples of a couple of the longer ones currently in his project queue. Hopefully, finishing up Bremgarten relatively soon will free up more time to work on the others on his plate.
    As for driving or racing, I'm kind of a perfectionist, so there's still some pressure I put on myself to perform anyway. However, I'd say, even if it's a real track, if it's lesser-known, that alone can make it easier, as it's not like there's a famous lap record to shoot for.
    Another area that could be addressed is the library of real, well-known hill climbs. In the mid '60s, there were half a dozen of these that appeared on the World Sportscar Championship calendar: Freiburg and Rossfeld (Germany), Consuma and Bolzano Mendola (Italy), and Ollons Villars and Sierre Montagna (Switzerland). That would give more people a taste of these sorts of roads in a more manageable form, while also lending a stronger sense of "reality" to these kinds of places and events.

    fyi, double precision calculations doesn't mean its calculated twice, it means it is calculated with twice as many digits.
    EX) 100 + 200 = 300 vs. 100.001 + 200.002 = 300.003

    It's like a throw back to the 80s going to the coast for me with it being a Mini in country lanes. Sound pretty similar to a mini that i recall, burrburrburr with the small CC engine. Is there the overheating issue in the Mod, 😂 Needs to be a 'Mr Bean' paint job too

    Does this also fix the issue of things being in different places on the track? Like I’ll load up the track and as load in objects r all of the place. The walls, trees, barriers r in the middle of the track but u can drive through em, the track isn’t even on the path it’s supposed to be, it just looks like a huge mess. I’ve had it happen to me on ‘67 Watkins Glen, ‘73 & ‘95-2000 I think version of IMOLA, Huston did it before but I think I found a fix for it on Race Department, Nurburgring 2001, and a couple others. Idk if it’s something with the data to the track or if something I gotta downloaded to fix it or what it is.
