hey Dale, I would like to thank you for being one the creators who kept me sane during my time in college, your videos always put me in a good mood after a pretty hard day of school, there are times I want to ride but unfortunately I can't as I'm far away from my home town and preoccupied learning about engineering things haha but these videos always scratch my riding itch. Will be in my third year this August. Keep these videos coming!
I bought the Osmo action 4 adventure bundle this winter having zero experience with action cameras. I am super satisfied and I even started posting my mediocre riding abilities on youtube... I love your channel and your triumvirate with Nic and Dave!
Your videos are the best; picture width & height (handlebar perfectly viewed in the bottom), low distorsion, great sound (thank god no music - asmr 👏), good commentary/storytelling … and your riding ain’t too bad 👌😀👏
Showed up on my recommended as I was doing research recently and couldn't really find "proper" riders doing review of this. Most of them either don't ride the type of terrain i need it for or just jump all over the place. You video had EXCATLY what i needed on every aspect of the camera including perfect balance of shots that I would make. Keep up the great work!
My partner is a huge fan of Dale’s, and I’m a professional filmmaker. We watch a lot of Dale’s videos together and really enjoy the aesthetic and vibe of his videos. This is an awesome and well researched review and I can always tell how much care goes into his videos! The 10 bit D-log is huge, and the magnetic mount is awesome. We have some old action 1 cameras at the studio and we’ve put them through a lot! We once buried one in a snowbank filming a snow plow video and had to wait until spring to find the footage. Footage was worth the wait and the camera is still working! Definitely time for an upgrade I think. 👀
Post #2: More importantly (for me since I’m not in the market for an action camera) is that I LOOOVE those two action shots of your mountain biking exploits that you’ve had blown up on the wall behind you! I’ve seen the sunburst one many times before, and not sure if I’ve seen the airborne slab descent. Regardless, great shots and I’m happy you have them decorating your home!
Great review Dale! Sounds like a great piece to showcase your riding adventures! The footage looks very nice. AND congrats that DJI has sponsored your video, that's pretty big I'd say... :)
The picture quality is very good. You can see the difference from your earlier videos. I particularly like the lack of noticeable distortion on the perimeter of the wide angle shots. I am also impressed with the resolution of Nick's new camera @VanCan. I have to believe that enhanced resolution saps battery life and I like the fact that your camera reduces the need to worry about having to swap out batteries due to its strong battery life.
The X4 is an incredible creative tool, and one that I'd love to try. But for a fixed perspective use, the "pixel density" of the image after cropping to the same FOV is still much higher on the DJI. I haven't done the math, but you probably need upwards of 12-14K to capture an equivalent level of detail with a 360 camera.
As someone who finds the distortion from 360 cameras nauseating/vertigo inducing, I appreciate that you never went that route. If I ever feel the need to replace my Hero 9, the DJI will be on my shortlist. I don't know how to do any sort of colour grading in post, so that would be my only cause for concern.
I struggle with angles using my chin mount. I use a GoPro 11. I do measure the distance from the bottom of the camera to the helmet to get close but sometimes it's just off a bit too much. I try to take a look on the app or on camera after my first DH run.
with the hero 10 I just made some knife marks in small increments on the the plastic mount piece. I think It was boostmaster that made a vid showing that. So then I just move it to the ideal marker depending if the trail is really steep or more mellow. You need to test each mark on some small piece of trail until you find which one looked the best.
I didn't notice that you had changed from the 3 to the 4. Might switch to the 4, broke the screen on my 4th replacement (Action 2) as their screens are made of tissue paper. 😅
@@DaleStone thanks and do you have tip to reduce breathing sounds while editing ? all i hear on my video is my breathing sounds wich is quite anoying ...
You ever struggle with grainy footage in high light? Or shaky footage in low light? To counter these I've messed with the exposure settings quite a bit but haven't been able to land on anything that feels amazing. Then again, I'm on the Action3
I've not experienced either with my 3 (or 4). Sounds like the first one could be a render bitrate export issue, and the second maybe a camera calibration issue? My understanding is that stabilization is largely done by the overall gyros and not the sensor output.
@@longsenxu th-cam.com/video/zCPFBFgnxbw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CyOnhN4Koz8Pnqqo This helped A LOT! I didn't even know there was a shutter speed RANGE setting by pressing on the upper left section on the auto settings page.
Okay thanks for you help one more question cause I just purchased one of you are in pretty sunny conditions do you need and filter or does the camera not need it for good looking footage
@@diorez5112 I haven't used my ND filter set yet, but would do so when skiing or riding in the alpine. In the forest it is not necessary as it tends to be quite dark already, even when sunny.
Hi Dale, did you have any issues with importing files to Davinci Resolve? Found some comments from people struggling with unsupported file errors when trying to import files, or when they manage to import, the footage is distorted (even though ok when viewed on players like VLC). As I'm about to buy DJI action 4, should I prepare for similar issues? If so, how hard is to actually make DJI camera files work on Davinci Resolve?
I had an issue once before, but wasn't sure if it was from the DJI or my Sony cam, so I just "pre render" all of the clips as I crop them. Forget what it is called specifically. No issues after doing that!
@@DaleStone Ok, pre render, will check that out (total noob here). Thanks. Do you use free version, or bought DR Studio? Heard that support for H.265 codes is included in the Studio only.
Can this camera record while on external battery? I run GoPro w/ external battery to keep it cooler and longer run times. I sacrifice waterproofness for this, but we can ride our trails wet.
I'm not sure! I've never had any overheating issues, and I managed on a single battery for a 5 hour ride last weekend (not all filmed of course). Your use case would have to be wildly different from mine to require external power, haha.
@@DaleStone Gopro overheats easily. I am in Texas and ride in summer 100F + weather and only way I could figure out to get gopro to not overheat quickly was external battery. I got idea from karma gimbal, and just use a Neotech wireless pouch for the battery.

My gopro 7 just can't die, even though it's no longer waterproof. DJI will be my next move for sure, i'm fed up with lost footage and frequent freezing

@@DaleStoneI'm waiting a bit, just to see if the Action 5 will be even better, maybe with a 1 inch sensor. But knowing my luck, on my next ride a UFO will land on the trail and a talking deer will fight it off with a spear made of its own antler while singing punk rock songs (quite badly though), and my gopro will be like: SD card error
It sure looks great but what frustrate me is that they do not make their equipment compatible... I just got the DJI microphone and oh no... we won't make it compatible, we will just ask you to buy the DJI2 to make them work... sorry but when that happens... it just sucks :)
Even the footage looks great and riding as well, all is very blurry and lack details. Almost as is like it was recorded in 1080p instead 4k. If you stop and look, the trees are almost transparent with background.
