【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

It's cute seeing how much Hana actually cares for Kotaro. When he's home she hides it quite a lot!
Not really. Hana won't eat breakfast without Kota, she wrestles with him every day, she hates the hose that takes Kotaro's attention, we see her sometimes hold hands with him when they sleep. Through it all she's really quite devoted to him.

@@luna10617 Well, otters are used to always being with their family group. I suspect that's why Kota and Hana make so many calling sounds when Mom and Dad leave the house without them.

Hana doesn't want to be alone. Otters are quite high maintenance, so, not everybody can live with otters. They are smart but also very needy and need constant attention 💕💕💕💕

"separation anxiety" is a term which belittles the important of family togetherness
Hey Cindy. You know, this is why I appreciate channels like Kotsumet and Otterman. They don't shy away from how difficult it is to care for these adorable but _very_ high-maintenance creatures. It's _because_ they're so smart and social (not every otter species is) that they hate being alone so much. It's why most keepers have two or eventually get a second to keep them from going crazy from loneliness. Of course individuals are different -- Hana isn't Bob.
Hana is so cute 🤗 One more that she is very used to her family. When Kotaro stuck his paw through the door slot, my heart melted away. ❤️😍

They are so cute but the amount of maintenance, sacrifice, & money you put into them is truly admirable in my humble opinion. Everyday will have to include the two fur babies into your plan as well.

Hana knows that Kotaro is not a cuddly type. Dad, on the other hand, will give her plenty of cuddles. But that doesn't mean she didn't want Kotaro back. Watching her put her little head down to try to hear their footsteps was so cute but it also broke my heart just a bit.
Hana - Maybe I didn't want to go out today, but that doesn't mean Kotaro gets to go instead. 🥺😢😂💖

Mom Kotsumet pointed out that when Dad goes to work, Hana is a little sad but coping because she and Kota are at least still home. But when Kotaro leaves with Dad she starts calling out to find him. That's just too cute.
Aww Hana on her back waiting for her belly rub is so precious! I’ve never heard her chirp before…she really missed Kotaro. Meanwhile, when Kotaro comes back home, he doesn’t even say hi to Hana lol. Her favorite exercise is cuddling. 🤗💕😉

The only real difference is Hana is a princess and acts like it while Ui apparently had a horrible youth and PTSD to work through -- at least now they can be in the same area without trying to kill each other… 😊

Huh? People keep saying Hana misses Kotaro, but it looks like she misses her human more, judging by the way she greets them upon return.
I think she knows that Kotoro is the standoffish type, while daddy will spoil her with cuddles.

@@Soufriere84 I watched the video again and could not find where Ms. Kotsumet “outright” says Hana “doesn't chirp like that when Kotsumet leaves for work but does when Kotaro is gone”, can you provide a time-stamp? If you’re referring to 4:00, that’s not definitive to what you’re saying. I can see & hear at 0:38+ she does a similar chirp when Dad leaves. At 1:27 Mom says Hana gets particularly sad when Dad’s gone, but is fine as long as she and Kotaro are there. At 4:48 & 6:15 Hana shows no immediate interest in Kotaro’s return but sprints towards her human-cuddle-station. At 6:01 Mom states they “will make even more noise” when both of them try to leave, which is why they can’t leave them home alone.
Only thing “outright” Mom has said is that, “Hana gets lonely easily” 5:12. So unless Kotsumet clarifies, it’s very clear Hana just prefers familiar company whether it be Dad or Kotaro, whomever is paying attention to her, but obviously there are nuances between otters that a human can’t replace. A more decisive experiment would be to see how she reacts when it’s Mom taking Kotaro out and Hana gets Dad all to herself. Will she still cry if Dad is spending time with her?

Hana's "pay attention to me" chirp is so cute! There needs to be otter-friendly restaurants, cafes, movie theaters and museums so mom and dad can go out together :)
