I'm currently in Florida and I was taught to always put side rails up while asking the resident to turn on their side. Even the instructor for the exam said to use side rails, as long as you put them down when you are finished. My place of employment also requires side rails when asking residents to turn to prevent falling, no matter how capable they are of staying on the bed. I understand it may be different depending on instructors and facility policy. Just wanted to share my experience with side rails. I love these videos and they help definitely helped so much!
Thank you for your input. The state exam specifically states that siderails will not be graded for the purpose of providing safety, so safety MUST be addressed in some other manner other than siderails. This video demonstrates the proper performance of skills without the use of siderails while maintaining safety principles. Many settings (home care, assisted living centers, convalescent homes, etc.) will not have siderails on the beds, so everyone must know how to perform these skills without risking injury to the patient without the use of siderails. You are are saying soiled linnens, but you are not wearing gloves for this skill! How’s that? Will I fail if I wear gloves before doing this skill as I see it necessary? Please respond and thank you so much.
Im suprised no one has mentioned this cool trick! When replacing the pillow case grab a a corner peice of the pillow case letting the pillow case hang inside out then grab the pillow by the tag with that same hand while still holding the pillow case and flip the pillow case right side out over the pillow! It makes it easier to not let the pillow or the case touch your scrubs!

Hi , i have a quetion please While rolling the soiled sheet and put a clean one And while changing the pillow cover Aren't we performing hand washing ??
Yes you definitely should. If you're comfortable with the glove habit they won't deduct points! I always wore gloves when practicing and during clinicals I'm glad I never forgot 🤧 very soiled linens there. Best of luck
Gloves can be confusing - we get it! But there are three rules that are very specific and tell you EXACTLY when to wear gloves. You can find out more information for free here: th-cam.com/video/AQa9RYK1BI4/w-d-xo.html
Jamie Branch you may have found the answer by now but for some reason, normally they won't count it against anything for touching the dirty linen even if it could cause contamination
If you read the prometeric checklist for this skill on #4 of this skill it says : Remove and replace bottom sheet on one side of the bed, before turning resident to remove and replace sheet on the other side of the bed... So it is done correctly in the video. Hope that helps
Somehow I missed this comment...my apologies, but let me try to clear up this point for future students! Remember: Clean rolls toward you, dirty rolls away. So rolling the dirty sheet away and tucking the sheet under the patient, then rolling the clean toward you and tucking it under the dirty only allows the UNDERSIDES of both sheets to touch. So the part of the sheet that the patient way lying on is not touching the part of the clean sheet that the patient WILL be lying on. However, please be aware - the PATIENT is still in the bed. You know...the SOURCE of that contamination in the first place! :-) As soon as that clean sheet is placed on the bed, the patient is lying on it. Now, if the dirty sheet has liquid that has soaked into it, we don't want that liquid to get the new sheet wet, so wrap a chux around the soiled sheet roll before putting the clean sheet on the bed and this will prevent transfer of wet body fluids during the linen change. But this is not the case for the exam....we are simply demonstrating that we know the technique used to change the sheets. Hope this clears this up! Best of luck!
Thank you so much for the videos! My class (in FL) starts tomorrow so I'm a little anxious/nervous. I wanted to get a general idea of what to expect. I'm a big picture kind of a gal, so I know that remembering all of the small details within each skill is going to be a pain. Typical Sagittarius here ;)
Best of luck in your class! The small details should be presented in a manner that is easy to remember, your instructor will explain "why" each step is important. Our skills book also provides step-by-step instructions on how to perform each skill. Many schools use our books and videos, so you may see us again in training! Best of luck!
Hi i have a question when you make the bed you said remove the soil sheet so if is soil why you not wear gloves i will get my test tomorrow i realize just now that part can you please clear me that question please
Isn't it considered dangerous to leave him on his side when you throw the soiled bottom sheet in the linen basket (4:13)? I thought he must be in the center of the bed when you're walking away. How can you avoid this? Maybe by putting the linen basket at the foot of the bed?
Since we asked the patient to scoot toward us prior to turning (1:50 and 3:45), we ensure that the patient is in the center of the bed when lying on their side (see overhead camera angle at 2:00 and 3:54 which shows that the patient is in the center of the bed). This is sufficient for safety purposes, since the patient is not positioned near the edge of the bed. You are still in the room, since the soiled linen hamper will be at the foot of the bed or near the bed for the exam, but having a patient lying on their side in the center of the bed is an appropriate position even if you were leaving the room. The key here is that they are in the center of the bed, not whether they are on their back or side. If you have a patient that is unable to remain on their side without support, the care plan would specify appropriate measures to take to ensure their safety. This patient (for the exam) has no physical limitations that prevent them from lying on their side unassisted. Remember, the CNA follows the care plan, the whole care plan and nothing but the care plan. Hope this helps! Thank you for your comment!
i have a question , does it matter the order you do the skill, for example they showed us we first would have to change the under sheet and then after the top sheet...would it matter on test day'
There is no testing checkpoint that indicates the order the sheets must be changed, but if you change the top sheet first, it may get in the way while you are trying to change the bottom sheet - and remember, it cannot touch the floor. So, in terms of convenience, most CNAs opt to change the bottom sheet first, then the top sheet. Hope this helps!
I have questions about the two sheets...would the clean sheet not be considered contaminated after touching under the patient while the the dirty sheet was still on the bed? Wouldn't one wear gloves for any skill dealing with the patient or any of their linen be it considered soiled are not? same with the pillow cases, she touched the dirty one and the clean one without washing her hands in between, is this acceptable?

My journey is one of a gradual one but it’s great for me . I’m starting my bridge excercises this Saturday
I like how it is done. It is simple and neat about rolling the dirty linen away and the clean linen towards...

Congratulations! That is awesome! Best of luck in your new career! You are an incredible healthcare hero!
You are are saying soiled linnens, but you are not wearing gloves for this skill! How’s that? Will I fail if I wear gloves before doing this skill as I see it necessary?
Please respond and thank you so much.
These video's are great. One question, I've been taught to raise the bed to my hip height but you don't do that here?
Im suprised no one has mentioned this cool trick!
When replacing the pillow case grab a a corner peice of the pillow case letting the pillow case hang inside out then grab the pillow by the tag with that same hand while still holding the pillow case and flip the pillow case right side out over the pillow! It makes it easier to not let the pillow or the case touch your scrubs!
Thank you very much for the wonderful and easy to follow videos you've shared. I had my exams on the 19th of June and I passed. You're videos are great.

I'm taking my state exam tomorrow in newyork been studying all day
It looks easy and you have to make sure to keep the patient still🌼🌼🏵️😑
Hi Patty, I passed that you a bunch! NYC represent
Hi , i have a quetion please
While rolling the soiled sheet and put a clean one
And while changing the pillow cover
Aren't we performing hand washing ??
Question: Would it be appropriate to wear gloves if the bed linen is soiled? and would this be simulated on the cna skills exam?
Yes you definitely should. If you're comfortable with the glove habit they won't deduct points! I always wore gloves when practicing and during clinicals I'm glad I never forgot 🤧 very soiled linens there. Best of luck
Gloves can be confusing - we get it! But there are three rules that are very specific and tell you EXACTLY when to wear gloves. You can find out more information for free here: th-cam.com/video/AQa9RYK1BI4/w-d-xo.html
QUESTION...Regarding tucking the clean sheet "under" the soiled one...would not that be a risk of contaminating the "Clean" sheet?
Exactly!
Are we required to wear gloves while doing occupied bed?thanks.
Hello, here is a video I made on "Glove Rules." th-cam.com/video/AQa9RYK1BI4/w-d-xo.html
I love the new video look Mrs.Patty!!❤
Very clear quality and the new camera angles are great aswell!
+Kelly-zena Cooper Thank you for your comment! I really appreciate the feedback! Thanks!
Dont you need to have on gloves for the dirty linen? Thanks!
Do I have to talk while doing the skills in front of evaluator sorry for asking I’m taking in October 3rd in North Carolina
Those green pads a gold. .I love how exaggerated the skills are
Do we put the table bye resident or move out the way?
Best video yet! Thank you so much!

She is such a pro !!!
i forgot to come backkkk i am now a certified nursing assistant ! passed on my first try
Do u need to have gloves on to change the dirty linen?
Gloves aren't worn to change bed linen? No draw sheet?
Thanks for filming above the bed. Easier to understand.
Hey I just want to know what about occupied bed with bed rails and gloves for wet sheets
i have a question , does it matter the order you do the skill, for example they showed us we first would have to change the under sheet and then after the top sheet...would it matter on test day'
There is no testing checkpoint that indicates the order the sheets must be changed, but if you change the top sheet first, it may get in the way while you are trying to change the bottom sheet - and remember, it cannot touch the floor. So, in terms of convenience, most CNAs opt to change the bottom sheet first, then the top sheet. Hope this helps!
4yourCNA ok thank you very much...def help
Thank You Soo Much For Your Videos ,As Of Today 9/23/22 I An Certified Cna 🥰 This Was My First Skill
