    Keeping track of the color and recipe on a storyboard is genius. Great tip.

    if I want a more rich red, should I go with oxides? Last time I used so much of acrylic red, in order to get a rich red and no pink, that when the grout dried it was all cracked.

      This is a great question. It is important what color grout or thinset you start with. A medium gray grout will get you to a richer color faster than a white grout. Coloring white grout will almost always create a pastel end result, and yes adding too much acrylic will cause cracking. This can also be true of Oxides but it is much less likely. Remember when ever you add something to cement based products you are changing the chemistry with can effect the final cure. Most cement based mediums do not recommend adding more that 2% - 3% colorant buy weight.

    Hi, why would you color thinset? The thinset will not be visible because the grout covers it, right? Thanks for doing these great videos!

      Many contemporary artists do not grout the finished works, because some thinset may be visible between the pieces of the mosaic they color the thinset.

      glass tile is affected by thinset colour.

      I'm doing a stone backsplash. The stone doesn't meet each other perfectly so I need a dark thinset for those little openings between the stone.

      Paper-faced glass mosaics that are used in home decorating are usually translucent. Most tile installers use white thinset to install these, and the thinset is visible through the tile (you have to knock down and smooth out any trowel marks to avoid an inconsistent look). If you color the thinset, it can give the mosaic a completely different finished look; especially for mosaics with clear glass.

    There is a liquid grout colorant/sealant called Grout Renew, could you add this to powdered thinset to color it? And can you use grout colorant and cement colorant interchangeably?

      I am sorry I did not get back to you sooner. Somehow your question fell between the cracks. Thank you for being a fan! I guess no harm is using "Grout Renew". Yes, the colorants are interchangeable grout and thin-set.

    are you using acrylic paint?

    • @MakeitMosaics
      @MakeitMosaics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NO. We prefer concrete colorants, manufactured for specifically for thinset mortar, grout and stucco.

      How is using Concrete colorants better than acrylics? Does it not work
