- In this video I discuss hedge witchcraft and answer the questions "What is a hedge witch?" and "what does a hedge witch do?" This is a little introduction to the path of hedge witchcraft as I practice it; we'll cover alot of ground on the subject in this video. We'll give a bit of a definition to hedgewitchcraft, talk about what is mainly involved in the practice of the hedge witch and of course talk hedge-riding. I'll finnish up by discussing my favorite tools for hedge-witchcraft and hedge riding. This is a topic near and dear to my heart, as I'm a hedge witch myself. Yes I took a little bit of a hiatus to jump into my new career and move into a new living space. It took a long time to rebuild my recording space. Then right as I started to work on content again, hurricane ian hit my town! I'm still out of state after evacuating. It has been one thing after another! I'll never leave youtube though, I love what I do here :)

I had a friend many years ago who had introduced me to ancient Magicks and I have more recently discovered Modern Witchcraft. I have found that Hedge Witchcraft resonates with me on so many different levels. I’m just starting out on my journey In witchcraft. I’m most attracted to hearth, green, and hedge witchcraft at the moment. I’ve been working with various forms of cartomancy (tarot, lenormand, kipper, and various oracle card decks), as well as the I Ching and ling ch’i ching, but haven’t gotten into any kind of spell or crafting work yet. I’m concerned about hedge riding because I live with my family who I’m not completely out to, as well as being a solitary so there’s concern about something going wrong and having no one to help me.

I am currently working on that. I've recently gone through a loss in my immediate family, so I've taken a considerable amount of time to heal. I've been jumping back into my practice again though, and that means jumping back into sharing my practice with all of you too. The broom is more important now than ever. So i'll definitely be posting more about it!

I don't personally use a lot of sound frequencies in my practice. They give me tinnitus lol. However if you want a deep trance, shoot for frequencies in the Theta range.

I'll absolutely do a video on that. When I first started, I wanted to know what it looked like, felt like, and what the experience was like too. It can be a little different every time, and I think it can be different from person to person.

Hedge-witches practice hedge-witchcraft. Mediums act as a medium between a spirit that wishes to communicate and our world.
There is a bit of over-lap. Mediumship might be a part of a hedge-witch's practice. Though not all mediums are hedge-witches because they might not practice witchcraft.

Do you have any books that you would start with? Esp with shifting
I personally don't work with shifting. I practice the art of transvection, which I and many others call spirit flight or hedge-riding. The main difference is that I work in spirit-form in our physical realm or as a spirit in the spiritual realm that is connected to our dimension. Some books I would highly reccomend are "A Broom at Midnight:13 Gates of Witchcraft" by Roger J Horne, "Trance-Portation:Learning to Navigate the Inner World" by Diana L Paxson, "By Moonlight and Spirit Flight: The Praxis of the Otherworldly Journy to the Witches Sabbath" by Micheal Howard, "The Witches Ointment: The Secret History of Psychedelic Magic" by Thomana Hatsis and though they are very short reads "Hedge-riding" and "Hedge Witchcraft" by Harmonia Saille are both pretty good.
I'd also check out "CunningFolk and Familiar Spirits: Shamanistic Visionary Traditions in Early Modern Brittish Witchcraft and Magic" by Emma Wilby. As well as "The Night Battles: Witchcraft and Agrarian Cults in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries" and "Ecstasies: Deciphering the Witches Sabbath" both by Carlo Ginzburg.

I'm glad you liked the video, thanks for checkn it out. I'd call myself a bit of an eclectic too. There is so much in the world of witchcraft it's hard not to draw wisdom from all over the place.
Basically Witchcraft, Herb Craft, and Shamanism rolled all together in a nice little bundle. But we'd rather Heal than Harm with our Craft. Even though, sure people like to come to me for "curses" on an enemy. I tend to use my Spiritual Coaching skills to ask them really good questions, then after they've thought about it, my work can then begin, because it's more about Healing vs Doing Harm. You also get to help others help themselves with their Shadow Work (it's best to never do it alone).

Well, everyone has their own ideas on what each type of witchcraft is. I see alot of hedge-witches who are really into the cunningfolk-magick. Herbal medicine and all that. Very hearth/green magick, in my opinion, but to each their own.
To me, a hedge-witch travels beyond the hedge of this world to the next and back again.

Hello! I've been getting some nudges in life that I might be a hedge witch. So glad you have info on the non-kitchen, non-green hedge witchcraft. I do have some kitchen in me, but my focus is riding. I practice hinduism and my ishata devi is Matangi - the goddes witch of the woods and knowledge of the three worlds. Lines right up!
I have a little kitchen witch in me too... I make a pretty good pumpkin bread, if I do say so myself lol. Though much like yourself my focus is absolutely riding, in my mind that's what sets me apart. I was never a huge fan of labels since my practice is highly eclectic anyway, but hedge-riding spoke to my heart in a way no other practice has.
I just found you today and I am finally glad to know what kind of witch I am. I couldn't put a title on it. I have been doing hedge work for many , many years. Through dreams , Astral travel, and trances. I also use tarot cards in my craft. So nice to find you. Thank you for making your videos to help us.

After watching the video I'm still not seeing a difference between "Hedge Witchcraft" & normal witchcraft. In reality, a "Hedge Witch" was a witch that just lived on the edge of town. You know where it was a bit safer from the church. I've been practicing magic for over 32 years & it has been only in the last 15 or so that these terms really popped up. Everything you're saying here is just normal practice to anyone pre 2005.
I agree that post 2005 witchcraft focuses heavily on personal power and energy manipulation as a means for manifesting. Really, that shift is a revival of the "Philosophy of Natural Magick" we saw gain popularity in the Renaissance Era. Which distinguished itself by "emphasis of natural objects and operations, crucially distinct from the power of spiritual intelligences identified with demonic Magick." This was certainly in response to the very popular study of necromancy that had been seriously booming since the middle ages. We have to assume the "spiritual influences identified with demonic magic" pretty much means any spirit the church would find demonic, which is basically all of them. So there has been a working magical practice based on the exclusion of helpful spirits for quite some time.
I think many of us have preconceived perceptions based on witch hysteria from the early modern period, but materials from the time show many practitioners didn't do a lot of spirit summoning even then. The large majority of folk spells we find are essentially early herbal medicine and christian prayer. With the anomalies being witches who confessed to having a familiar, and going on spirit flights. I think that goes to show that magical practice has always been diverse and evolving.
So what is "normal" witchcraft? Our modern english word "witch" has been used to describe enchantors, magical practitioners, sorcerers, and diviners throughout the centuries and all over the world. I'm not going to separate practitioners who choose not to work with spirits from the tradition of witchcraft entirely. It was 20th-century occultist Aleister Crowley who defined magick as "the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with the will" and that I believe, has become a corner stone philosophy of modern magical practicioners.
I choose to use the term hedge-witchcraft to distinguish my practice because it reflects a modern revival of traditional broadly northern european magical practices involving spirit flight or hedge riding. "Haegtessa," the anglo saxon for "hedge-rider" was once a popular euphanism for "witch/wicca" in Britain because it reflected the pagan-rooted folk practices secretly taking place there in the Dark Ages. The focus of my witchcraft practice is the hedge-riding and spirit work.
In modern times and throughout the centuries, there have been plenty of witches who do not include hedge-riding in their practice. You don't have to hedge-ride to be a witch, and that is the defining factor.
In Islamic tradition especially in Hinduism this trance like state you speak of is also called gnosis and I believe the reason that it is a different experience for most is either because it is the environment around them the environment that they grew up in or it is the environment that they want to be in that gives them the different experience and if an individual has ever experienced it in one way before then this might be the reason that they had two different experiences if they reached gnosis a second time that's basically the same thing a psychotropic hallucinogen would do I would know as I have smoked pot and went to church right after and got saline in the spirit without anyone praying for it or speaking of it and then the next month I went to a hedge shop stoned and seen magic all over the place obviously I fell in love with magic instead or else I wouldn't be here

Like what practice looked like when you started and then did you gradually add in other things or did you just jump straight into the deep end lol? Hope that makes sense. I'm feeling a bit stalled in my practice at the moment and trying to figure it out. 🤔
I can definitely do a video talking a bit about how I got started. It was actually my experience with spirits that got me into witchcraft in the first place, so I was always a bit of a hedge-witch without even knowing the term untill a bit later in my practice. I'll go through my whole origin story, and what my practice looked like along the way.

I am very intrigued by witchcraft in general but specifically hedge witchcraft, are there any resources like books or blogs or anything that you would recommend to someone just starting out from scratch with almost no knowledge of witchcraft at all?
I think I have some recommendations you might find useful. "A Broom at Midnight: 13 Gates of Witchcraft by Spirit Flight" by Roger Horne. That book is a great starting point. It meshes historical refrence and practical advice really well when it comes to hedge witchcraft, making it my top reccomendation. "Craft of the Hedge-Witch:A Guide to the Solitary Path" by Geraldine Smythe is a little different. It's more free form and written from the stand point of the author's personal experience and practice as a hedge witch. It offers some practical advice that I found helpful and I'd say it's beginner friendly. "Cunningfolk and Familiar Spirits: Shamanic Visionary Traditions in Early Modern Brittish Witchcraft" by Emma Wilby takes a look at witch trial confessions and their depictions of the relationship between witches and their familiar spirits. At the root of hedge-witchcraft is a connection with spirits, and I found this was an interesting exploration of that connection.
I've been planning a video on book reccomendations for hedge-witchcraft actually. So keep an eye out for that, but I think these are an awesome starting point.

Hello! I have recently grown an interest in the witchcraft world. I really don’t know where to start however. I feel very in tune with nature and the world around me but growing up I’ve also had a lot of experiences with the spiritual world (without even trying). I’ve never allowed myself to fully engage with either but I have this urge to feel more connected. I just don’t know whether to dive more deep into the elemental/green side or hedge. Welcome to witchcraft! I think you should study whatever really captures your interest, and remember you have your whole life to build your studies into other areas too. I claim hedge-witchcraft because that's the focus of what I do as a witch, but I'm very eclectic in my practice. My best advice is to get a good foundation first by looking into the mechanics of spell casting and training up your spiritual senses. Getting a great mediation routine is also very helpful when starting on the path of witchcraft. I also find that learning the history of witchcraft through the ages helps build a really great foundational understanding of the origins of different practices and how they have evolved. That should spark some inspiration on what you might like to study in the future too :)

Yes I use a pendulum quite often, I find it's one of the most convient ways to communicate. Working with a pendulum it's easiest to just ask yes or no questions. If you want more robust messages from the divine tarot or oracle cards might be helpful. Some people can physically hear messages from spirits, which is clairaudience. I personally do not hear spirits (unless they are banging on walls or sliding things around). I tend to pick up psychic messages through clairsentience. Everyone seems to pick up spiritual energy in different ways, but you could try building up a certain perception through different exorcises and practice.

There's no reason you can't be both. I am an eclectic hedgewitch. If I were to list off every type of witchcraft I do it'd be a very long list. So pick the title that resonates with you and your practice most, but don't put yourself in a box.

As a Hedgewitch taught by His Mother, And it being a bit of family practice. I like your definition, but there's a bit more to Hedge Riding. And there's a bit more to Hedgewitchery. But I do like your explanation and at least you've got the practice right. But we go to work, as in having a normal job, and we don't offer out our services, but whenever the chance does arise for us to utilize our knowledge, we do so. Sometimes the Hedgewitch tradition was to work by word of mouth. Yes. I've encountered the question, " are you a green witch?" I simply reply no. But as far as the "sweeping" yes we use it to sweep the floor, literally, and around our Hearth, it's okay if you don't have a Hearth, just a small place in your living room can become one. Because it helps get rid of the web of wyrd that we've woven with our daily living.
But that's okay if you don't. We know there's Modern practices that stem from Gardner's Wicca. But I do enjoy your information, I guess I'm a Old Traditional type of guy who's tradition stems back to it's indigenous roots to Europe. And what's really cool is it does fall under the Modern Holistic Therapy term.
And you're right, Hedgewitchery has no two same practices. It leaves room for them to use their individuality to work together when the time occurs for them to do. It's rare in modern times, because of our social constructs, but it still happens at times.
I like to define Hedgewitchery as seeing two worlds at once, and healing both. But enough of my rantings.
It's very nice to meet you. I lean into the more traditional myself, well at least that's what I mainly study along with Irish/Scottish folk magick. I'm kind of ecclectic in my practice. Thank you for checking out my video. I know this one is kind of lacking, my point was more-so to get people familiar with the concepts. It is very difficult to get all the information in one video, but I'll be doing more on hedge-witchcraft and I hope to hear your thoughts on those too. It's great to get to chat with another hedge-witch who is so experienced in their practice.
On the "sweeping" thing, I don't mean to suggest hedge-witches don't sweep. I know there are alot of beginners who follow my channel, and I try to add to common beginner level stuff. Everyone knows a besom is purifying, but the knowledge that it can be used as a tool for a visionary practice is a bit less common when starting out. I tend to be a smoke cleanser, I like juniper and rosemary for that job.

I just recently have found out that witches, deities and spirits are a thing.
I've been hearing stuff in my mind
Like words or phrases would pop up in my mind, at first i thought that was just my brain coming up with stuff.
But i once woke up at 3 am and someone in my head said that fire alarm in my dorm will go on and it did in like 30 seconds and there were a lot of other times when someone would said something and it would happen.
So recently someone in my head told me that i need to find out what are deities and i asked what deity wants to connect with me and later that day when i forgot that i asked that question the word "Hecate" popped up in my mind.
I found some videos with witches on TH-cam but they all say that this thing with deities is not for beginners so now i'm super confused and don't know what to do

I've been feeling the call from lucid dreaming and astral for the last 5 years but i've always tried to wake up myself from it when i randomly would get in a lucid dream, it is so scary, i am scared of beings that are there but i feel like i cant resist it anymore and i have a feeling that i can learn a lot of stuff from there and it can change my life but i am sooo scared
Is there a way to make a scary being in that dream to make disappear or defeat it?

Hi there, gonna try not to ramble too much w this but, to put it shortly, yes it can be dangerous to mess w spirits, and here's why .
Basically, when dealing w anything regarding the spiritual realm, you need to keep in mind, that your access to support and resources is significantly smaller . Your access to nuanced and accurate information is so much smaller . So it wont be easy to even identify what youre doing or what youre experiencing, let alone know what to do ab it or how to handle it . And, the people who will be able to identify and fix those things for you, are sparse and hard to access in comparison to the help youd find w mundane issues . Yes, we have the internet now and you have access to lots of videos, articles, podcasts etc . But since our society has not caught up to being spiritually aware, this information is hard to navigate . For example, we lack language to describe things of the spirit, so how can you even learn ab it in depth? How can you look things up? Then, Information can be scarce, or not tailored to your needs like personal advice would be; it can be inaccurate, shallow, wrong, regurgitated . And its not really consolidated or organized. You may meet spiritual people online but which of them will match your vibe enough for you to trust life advice from them ? Which of them will even recognize your own unique energy accurately enough in order to give you good advice ? Youre on your own in a way which is inherently dangerous when it comes to practicing a form of spirituality . And i dont mean to inspire fear, only to answer your question and equip you with firm bumpers .
I know some would say, that you should "trust your gut" and that "theres nothing to be afraid of" w this . Def trust your gut and learn to understand it . But realistically, this is reality, and youre an individual human who obviously is not keyed in on some information . The potential for you to run into something unexpected or out of your league is worth considering imo. Me, i would say, you have fear for a reason. It lets you know of a potential threat, trust it, understand it. And yes, your intuition will often lead you to the truth. But theres the gap of accurately interpreting your intuition, accurately applying it, and your own limits as a being who doesnt know everything, and doesnt readily have access to all information . I feel like its a hazard to assume that theres nothing in this uncharted world that will actually bring harm to you , or to take actions w the mindset that no matter what happens youll successfully handle it and youll be content w whatever the repercussions are . Idk if all energies are set up to "bring us only what we give" or "only what we can handle." Dont pretend like youre untouchable, that seems ungrounded and unhinged, even if its pleasant to imagine
Youre already attuned to the spirit realm, so it's probably beneficial for you to learn ab it and how it works . But just bc you have a natural attunement, doesnt mean its already a second home for you . Youre lacking understanding . And thats normal, i also fail to understand things, its def fine . Im just saying... a big part of the way we access the spiritual realm is through our minds.... if you dont have a good intellectual foundation... a good grasp of the reality of this realm, you wont be able to navigate it efficiently or effectively . And thats my honest advice . Not to mention, the relationship general humanity has w this . Its basically uncharted territory. But not like, an unrecorded forest on earth . Which we know will have trees and oxygen and bugs. Its a whole section of reality, not clearly acknowledged or discovered by our species . Its a different type of potential mess and a different type of danger than what most people deal with . And we are still working on it, so proceed with awareness . Nothing may happen and you may very well be safe, but its unwise to go screwing around w things you dont understand, w/o supervision or potential support

So... lets make the distinction between just energy and a spirit . Of course, i can only answer questions based on what i currently know and how i currently see things, but I'll say the difference is one energy is conscious and extends through time differently, the other isnt conscious and has a sort of stillness/stability to it .
Its a fact that all humans experience energy, work with energy, and are influenced by energy whether they believe in god or have a conscious spiritual practice or not . Think emotions, those are pure energy . And inexplicit communication, non verbal and non written. All things alive have access to energy and we humans have conscious awareness of it, and we can manipulate it .
That's different than energies which are conscious . And i will say that i personally dont have alot of conscious experience working w different conscious energies, ive been steering clear as a rule of thumb and for my own safety . But . Obviously a conscious entity will have its own drive, its own inclination, its own ties, its own influence .
Perhaps, dealing with deities is complex and not for beginners bc those energies are conscious and have history. You realistically cant just summon any god from any culture just bc you know their name . Unless you lack conceptual understanding of that process, then anything can seem to happen . W deities you need to appeal to specific, preexisting energy frequencies which i suppose have free will . And you cant do that unless youre solid w your energy senses , cant seek something specific if you dont understand the details .
I might assume, that an angel is more likely to answer the call of a stranger than an orisha . Bc angels are thought to help anyone in need. And orisha are more connected to tradition, less modern culture . It's probably very nuanced to attempt to call an orisha
Ive heard of hecate alot, never tried to work w her, but if thats a name you get, maybe its helpful to research her and see the types of energies that are associated w her . Seems to be very popular rn so maybe she reaches less experienced energies ? I have no idea . Researching her and simply imagining what her energy might be like should be fine, but actually trying to contact her or get something out of her is tricky bc you may not know whats truthfully responding to your call
W the dream thing... maybe, as you recognize its a lucid dream, recognize that youre from the 3D, so theres a deal of space and safety between what you encounter and whats going to actually take place in your life . Its still just a dream after all . Maybe this is controversial but i think its fine to ground yourself in a mundane perspective when necessary. bc that is, after all, the general energy of humans on earth . Personally i feel like i need to be connected to that, humans are social creatures .
The flashing lights... idk. I think its more important to be grounded in reality than try to pinpoint the blurryness of it . If the flashing lights didnt change your life and it was just a curious incident, i would say dont focus too much on trying to understand it, just accept it and let it go . Sometimes curious incidents will be really relevant and sometimes they wont . Thats up to you to discern but dont force the importance out of them, let them speak for themselves and try to stay calm and grounded . Personally, if a spirit is trying to send me a message they better make themselves clear, bc im not chasing a tail into darkness . Im happy that this path seems exciting to you and its great you have a natural foot in . I hope, if you see what i typed that it helps you to understand things a bit more, have a clearer perception of all of it . I think alot of the general info spread ab spirituality seems a bit unfounded and ungrounded to me so i just wanted to supply what i can to make sure you understand the ground youre walking on . I used to use binaural beats in high-school! There are different ones for sleeping, meditation, focus etc etc. They worked great for me. I did not have the tinnitus issue

Would love a video on what happened to the hill folk an hedge witches in the late 60s an threw the 70s. Where did all the family's go that lived in the Appalachias? The childern where accounted for by our government in the 60s n 70s but vanished with out any traces to this day.
