Thanks for choosing the Sequential Prophet 10 to use for your demonstration of the different effects pedals. I have this same exact model of synthesizer and wondered how good it would sound through external hardware effects. Indeed, it sounds absolutely wonderful. The Electro Harmonix Epitone has caught my attention while watching this video because I like how it does the octave shifting as well as how it provides stereo width. Both, the Eventide H90 pedal and Roland Jazz Chorus amp sound really good, too. Thanks for such a wonderful video. This definitely gives me ideas of what kind of effects to try out on my Prophet 10.
Thanks for the kind words. A few areas of caution. Unlike a guitar the output of the Prophet is hot. So you need to be careful with your gain so you don’t clip some pedals and amps. The H90 actually has a line level setting; so it is amazing for synths. Also, remember that while the Roland JC is cool; the speakers are very oriented for guitar sounds. So it is a bit more of a one trick pony if you go that route.
@RayyMusik yes. And in the 80s, that was the JC-120, which is a much bigger and more powerful amp, so in many ways the speakers were better to reproduce keyboards. But it was only mono as an input, and the JC-40 is stereo as an option. Hence why I went with the 40 for the review.
I play my KORG monologue through an HX Stomp, and it's absolutely amazing! It does mono and stereo and has many effects ranging from basic to very experimental. I actually use the pitch delay to create interesting melodies! Edit: You can actually set up the input so it works great with synths!
The HX stomp is another great alternative. In ways it is similar to the plethora in terms of “loading pedals”. Why did I leave it off? Probably just since Line 6 has so many variations that I didn’t know which one to pick. But over the years I’ve had many of their products and they’ve always been great. Of course the classic green delay pedal was always a staple!
Helpful video; thank you. I'm in the market for an effects pedal to compliment an Erica Bassline DB-01. I'm torn over the simplicity of something like an Astra vs the depth of the H90.
Ooo. That is difficult to answer since as you know, they are so totally different. One thing that is great about the UAFX is the simplicity to switch patches with dedicated 1:1 controls. But the depth in which the H90 can go is insane. I would be lying if I said it didn’t take a bit of time to learn the H90. But once you do, it makes a lot of sense. Maybe the biggest question is whether you will do a lot of manipulation of parameters (then go UAFX) or if you want limitless possibilities and an insane amount of depth with sound design (H90 has a lifetime of sounds to explore and it keeps growing with updates)
@@ToddUrban I just made the move on Hologram Microcosm. I can’t wait to receive it next week. Hey Todd, would you mind returning the Sub? I’d love to reach out for some advice on a few studio topics.
you need to add Fractals FM3..... Yes its a guitar pedal - and fractal are known for amp sims BUT their FX are on par with eventide - and the routing and number of FX are far more versatile than eventides. I keep going back to my Fractal for FX despite having a H90 and various other pedals to test.
@Lorneplumber the Helix is very nice from the limited use I’ve had with it. (Mostly adding a guitar player’s unit right before a gig) Honestly, the only reason I left it off is budget. I finance my equipment for my reviews, and there needed to be a limit. But I’m curious as to how you use the Helix. What are the biggest benefits for you? I’m sure many other people will have this question.
Effects can be part of the sound design, and other times are an extension of the performance. If you have used a CS-80 or similar large format synthesizer you understand what I’m saying. Especially when we get into polyaftertouch and other expressive techniques, it is rare to think of the effects as the basis of the performance’s expressiveness . But yes, I do agree, with basic batches, sometime effects can be essential to get a sound to translate as musically as you would need.
Amazing video! Subscribed!

@@ToddUrban You're very welcome! Thanks for the tips. I will definitely keep them in mind.
@@ToddUrbanIn the 80s the majority of Rhodes players used the Roland JC, which sounded fantastic. So it‘s not just a guitar amp.

@@ToddUrban Ah, I see. I was no longer aware of the numbers; the very similar look confused me.

The UAFX make the most from the Prophet‘s sound.
And it fits the knob per function workflow perfectly. Even the knob feels are similar with the grooved edges.
Thank You-Thank You-Thank You!!!
This is exactly what I needed help me choose from a few multi-efx pedals! 🎛️🎯🔥🔥🔥🫡
Awesome. Which ones are you considering?
@@ToddUrban I love Eventide & UAD, but I’ve purchased a couple from Hologram Electronics 🫡🎛️🔥🔥🔥
@@ToddUrban But from this video, I’m looking at the Eventide H90 Harmonizer and the Electro-Harmonix Epitome
The Epitome is on clearance prices! Do it! As for Hologram, they are on my radar to check out. I know they are popular.

I’ve heard great things about Fractal and work with tons of guitarists who use it as their rig without an amp. I’ll need to give it a shot!
Also helix. Beyond flexible and fx I prefer over strymons on synths. Easy to use also

Stomp boxes on my synth workspace? Guitarists put their feet on those things 😒
They wouldn’t dare! Not on mine. 😉
Thinking about the effects as separate from the synth is dumb, its part of the sound design.
