Very cool video! I found you because of your Robotics class and then discovered that you went to Chengdu. I used to live and study at a local university there near Jinli Street. I also got to hold a panda. It was SO FUN!
Nice! Jinli was beautiful. Did you end up becoming pretty fluent in Mandarin? I've been studying for about a year and can have pretty basic and poor conversation. Haha.
I definitely learned more Mandarin living in Chengdu and attending 西南民族大学 for almost a year than I did studying Chinese in the states for several years. Being there forced me to practice every minute. I look forward to being fluent one day. I wish I had a video blog then. Thanks for taking me down memory lane guys!
Yeah nothing like immersion. I've got several Chinese international students at my school that I practice with sometimes. Taking the Mandarin class for high schoolers right now since I have a free period when it's offered.
Great idea to practice with international students. I was the exchange student in China, so I found a language partner to help them improve their English at the same time. When I really need to polish my language skills, I watch CCTV News on the apps I still have on my phone. I let it play for hours to train my ear to recognize Mandarin at a native speed. Language podcasts and the Google Translate app allow me to talk to myself to test if Google recognizes what I'm saying in Mandarin. If I speak too slowly, it stops listening and I have to start over, so it forces me to think faster. Wishing you all the best in your Mandarin studies. I will return to Chengdu next year and vlog in Mandarin, so I begin a Mandarin refresher course soon.
I found the best vocab app was Skritter. $15/mo but worth it. Native speakers saying the words, reviews the ones you miss more often, quizzes you on tones, and the desktop version has the word in a sentence read by a native speaker that you can sort of quiz yourself on the meaning of before you reveal it. I dig it. Let me know when you've got some Mandarin vlogs up! Would love to see them and practice my listening :) Sometimes it's easier to understand another English speaker speaking Mandarin than a native speaker ;)

I spent a few hours there last year and especially liked the panda babies! Thought the panda hugging experience was a bit expensive for 20 seconds (2000 RMB or 300 USD I think?), and I was travelling alone and no one can take a full video for me lol. Also I travelled from Shenzhen in southern China so only about a few hundred miles, but if you had travelled across the world to see the pandas, it's definitely worth it!
Yes, super expensive and worth it for Sara :) I have a student here in the US that's from Chengdu and he said 'I didn't even know they had this in Chengdu!' Haha.

May be you didn’t find a violent panda video, but I’m telling you they could get aggressive (mostly in the wild when they feel threaten, in a zoo it’s probably cozy and happy), just have 1% cautiousness.

That panda looked hungry. It was busy eating other wise it probably will scratch you with those sharp claws. Pandas are probably the laziest animal ever existed. They are lucky that they look cuddly to humans so the humans are keeping them alive.
