Synthmania quick tip #16 - Crystal Waters' ''Gypsy Woman'' organ pattern

  • Showing the organ line of a wonderful House tune from my youth - Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman". I see myself as a bit of "synthesizer historian" and over the years I compile lists when I recognize certain sounds in songs. Here's a very partial list of how popular this patch was with the House music of the era, and beyond:
    Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman
    Datura - Mystic Motion
    Livin Joy - Don't stop Movin'
    Robin S "Show Me Love"
    Playahitty - The Summer Is Magic [Remix]
    Cappella - I Need Your Love
    Tanya Louise - Deep In You
    T-Spoon - Rockstar
    Alex Party - Read My Lips
    Hysteric Ego - Want Love
    Whigfield - Gimmie Gimmie
    George Morel ft. Heather Wildman - Let´s Groove
    Kuva feat. Beverli Skeete - Isn't It Time
    Alex Party: "Alex Party (Saturday Night Party)" Also CZ organ
    Double You - Please Don't Go cover
    49ers - Touch me (also 909 and sampled vocals)
    Jaydee - Plastic Dreams
    and a lot, a lot more songs used the M1 organ sound.

    OMG I have been trying to decode this by ear for 25 years. It makes little sense from a classical point of view, but with the breakdown it made much more sense. Except that diminished Csharp with a natural C ??? Thank you :)

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Thank *you for watching! That jazzy chords I'm not sure is C sharp. I think it's more like a C like I wrote in the chord names - or the relative A - chord, that plays right bere rightfully resolving back in the D min the song is in. Basically, I think the C# is the extra note in the chord, not the tonic, and the basic tonic is C (or A) instead of the other way around. But as you know, there are so many ways of interpreting chords in music theory. It's all good... if it sounds good.

    • @unclebob1o1
      @unclebob1o1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The C# is an extension that adds extra tension to the C7 chord

    • @Tomica031
      @Tomica031 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In jazz you have complex chords that have one chord in upper part, and other in lower (bass)... that chord is g minor diminished 7 chord (g minor flat 5 and minor 7), but you can put in bass A or C to make it A dominant flat 9 or C dominant flat 9...try to listen that chord like combination of 2 chords, gb5b7 is naturally resolving into F major or parallel d minor from subdominat side, and A dominant or C dominant resolves into d minor or F major from dominant side...so you combine dominant and subdominant chord into one

    • @DiegoCaponera

  • @steo.c
    @steo.c ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for this. That C7 dim9 (jazzy) chord which has the C# in it is wrong in so many other tutorials, and the C# is either a C or D in those. I knew C# sounded correct and in this video it's extremely clear that it is. Nicely explained also. I was also trying to understand how that could make sense from a theoretical point of view, but I guess it just passes through from D, C# (accidental) then C, and it seems to just resolve itself back to D minor. It's a really cool chord in the context and works so well.

    Yes it done! Everywhere in Italy disc was spin round. When I was a kid can felt jazzy taste but can't appreciate disco groove also for low quality hi fi stuffs spread out. Today I consider this very cool jazzy house hit, deliciuos and a little bit mysterius chord sequence, the Em7 create unexpected tension breaking out monotony. About sound design turn off effects was a right move producer's intuition that's made aseptic sound opposite reverberated drum pattern

    I still have a Korg 01W/FD and a Hammond XK-2 that is my main gigging rig, in perfect condition. Amazing to see the patterns broken down and the patches used. The organ patches on the O1W and other synths can sound "electronic" compared to the Hammond, but they are good. You also have to take into account the effects processing and mixing. For example, on my Hammond XK-2, I now run it through a Neo Ventilator 2 which gives it a great Leslie sound.

    I'm wondering how they even came up with this chord progression. I can only assume talented people who "know" what they're doing and just kind of "experimenting" on the keyboard.

    I first thought that they did have computer based MIDI sequencers with copy&paste back then, but you really can do this with any equipment.
