Back when EA Sports wasn't a corrupt money hungry company. Back when they actually cared about their products and when the developers put their heart and soul into every game they made. This was my first NHL game on PC and it remains the best for me. The soundtrack, the menu, the sfx the ambience.. everything is awesome.
I hate too much they stopped releasing games to PC back when I stopped buying consoles in the early 2000's, it's the only sport I enjoy playing on video games.
This was one of the best games I ever owned. I always bought games for PC back then because the game play and graphics and sound was so much better than anything else.
This was a night where parents went to the movies, played all night. They came home late, and I "waited up for them." They went to bed exhausted, and I played till 2am. Had no controller either - all keyboard. My team was in fact the Whalers. Stacked team by the end of the season, when I went 82-0, 5 star rating on everything, Shanahan and Sanderson had 86 goals each, Cassels had 145 assists. Burke's GAA was something like 0.92. Fucking Jimmy Carson had 30 goals on the 4th line! I think I scored 550 goals every season on Expert mode. It became a joke, and I just grew out of it. Then 98 came along. That wasn't the greatest. Goofy music, weird menu layout, the line combos were vertical instead of horizontal. Then 99 hit, and that...THAT was THE game. Cheapest way to score was to slapshot from the point, rebound was picked up by a defender, and for some stupid reason, kept skating the puck backwards into their own net. What else....EVERY shot to the empty net was dead centre. Changing jersey numbers in the rosters was adventurous to say the least. I never played with offside - just took forfuckingever to finish a game. Music was masterful. I actually credit 97 with getting me into metal music at 14 years old.
I used to stay up late on weekends in the summer and just let my team play against the cpu all night. Like I was watching my team play all through summer haha. Miss those days. Where the hell did 20 years go.....
Oh god NHL 97 for PC. This game blew my freaking mind when it came out. I played it all the freaking time! The commentary was amazing. The graphics were so far ahead of anything else at the time. Just great memories
This game was waaaaay ahead of it's time! The problem was, it was also way ahead of the technology, so it crashed all of the time... It even had player re-assignments and injuries during the pre-game warmups! EA learned to tone it back just a little bit and NHL 98 was a smooth beast. Three things I wish this video had though... 1) The intro. 2) The very best edit lines screen a game has ever had. 3) I wish a team was chosen that you could use the hidden button on to activate third jerseys! (I remember how excited I was when I was just goofing off one day and found it on accident)
i loved the setup an match-up screens for this game. I remember one day I went through every players profile an trying to find matching birthdays lol. also they had a cool feature where you could see all goalie masks...Kolzigs 'zilla' mask an trevor kidds were the best lol
That game was the shit :D had it for the PC playing it with the mouse... Left Button was for passing/poke checking, right button for shooting/ checking... :D Ps. Anyone remembering the highlight clips of the best Checks, Goals, Saves...? Or the Slideshow of the Goalie Masks?
It's actually funny how many people do use flash photography when in crowds at events, while they are well outside of the range where their flash does anything at all, other than making the crowd twinkle.
My friend and I always played Hurricanes vs. Red Wings. The computer would always stutter Kurt Maltby's name. Wesley on the Hurricanes had unfair speed!!!
Wow, played the shit out of this game on PC I remember that menu music. I also remember the game looking much more realistic lol. Always picked the Sabres
I remember it was pretty difficult to score. That's why I enjoyed it :-) I remember the menu and sounds and stuff too :-) Too bad NHL 98 got a lot worse then (10 or more goals in a game). IMHO, NHL 97 had the best goalie AI or whatever, AFAIR.
Well, "virtual windows xp" is one possibility. Another one is to run the game in "compatibility" mode and check some older windows version like 98/me for example (sometimes you need to check some other options as well like disable visual theme or 640x480 etc).

I still remember clearly when i saw this game the first time. It looked so great i was in heaven.

Yep. I remember buying this game in November of 1996 and playing it for hours on end when I should’ve been doing homework.

Menu music was so awesome.
NHL 98 had some great original music too.

Can't belive the Blues didn't win a cup that year. That lineup is stacked.
Oh to be 10 years old again. I freaking went crazy when commentary got added lol.
Such a classic game what a great. Got my Acer Aspire home system. 6k CAD btw.
Bring back the Hartford Whalers
wtf Craig MacTavish has a helmet on lol he was the last one to go without.
Before the Great One signed with the Rangers that summer. The one & only EA NHL game with Gretzky as a St. Louis Blue!
Best front-end in an NHL game ever.
After this the PC version became a console clone, making managing your team take an ice age.
I remember playing this game on Super Nintendo... lol
such a difference
EA bringing back Anthems in NHL 23 marketing it as new feature lmao
Memories!!! Still the best hockey game to this day... Ea became a joke
This looks like shit
This is the 90s I grew up on.
i played this every day after school lol..
Nostalgia.
Incredible game. This music is a masterpiece. :}
Man this takes me back :)
Loved this game. Played through the whole season as NYI but lost to Washington in the playoffs almost every time
That game was the shit :D had it for the PC playing it with the mouse... Left Button was for passing/poke checking, right button for shooting/ checking... :D
Ps. Anyone remembering the highlight clips of the best Checks, Goals, Saves...? Or the Slideshow of the Goalie Masks?
i used a controller on the pc
the day's when a .66 mhz faster cpu cost 2x the price
The good ‘ol days of PC games!
Way too many fans are ignoring the "No flash photography" rule lol
It's actually funny how many people do use flash photography when in crowds at events, while they are well outside of the range where their flash does anything at all, other than making the crowd twinkle.
After this game i get an epilepsy in my childhood 😅
My friend and I always played Hurricanes vs. Red Wings. The computer would always stutter Kurt Maltby's name. Wesley on the Hurricanes had unfair speed!!!
Hartford’s Creatures - November 14, 1993
The best front end ever
Wow, played the shit out of this game on PC I remember that menu music. I also remember the game looking much more realistic lol. Always picked the Sabres
And their changed unis back then
Click on the team banner at control setup and it unlocks 3rd jersey for that team if they had them.
RIP Brad McCrimmon
And Peter Zezel
Great game but this one crashed too often during a game so that was very annoying playing a season ...
Damn what a soundtrack
I remember it was pretty difficult to score. That's why I enjoyed it :-) I remember the menu and sounds and stuff too :-)

Even in NHL 19 they dont have the anthem
I think after 01 they stopped
I don't remember it glitching like that 😂
That’s robbery !
I love the commentators voice.
jim houston he is still commentating today
Brett McC Too bad he doesn't do this for EA anymore.
JudgeTread1 Yeah. He's so much better than Emrick.
+Willie Stroker YEAH
@@berti87 Houston? LOL
The game was so much fun, and the music kicked so much ass..
Ohhh awesome! I miss the opening and pré game starting lineup design ans show :) #MyFirstHockeyGameEver
I wanna this organ musics... How can I get it?
I've got this game, but I can't install on win10.
how did you get this game to run a modern PC? Thought it was not compatible with newer windows versions?
Well, "virtual windows xp" is one possibility. Another one is to run the game in "compatibility" mode and check some older windows version like 98/me for example (sometimes you need to check some other options as well like disable visual theme or 640x480 etc).
With DOS BOX maybe work
omg this is all i used to do
wow.. NHL with out a Roster update you had to do it all by yourself.lol.. that really sucked. lol..
Wow that is fkn bad
