      The first time I watched the show in 2015 (it is my favorite show, I watch it in it's entirety at least annually) I did stay loyal to walt the entire time. Because I had never encountered a show where the protagonist morphed into the antagonist. The second time I watched it I waivered when he made walt Jr drink and poisoned the baby boy and let Jane die. now I'm at the point where I take the journey and let my actual emotions about what he does flow without feeling the need to stay loyal to the main character, if that makes sense? I go through the process of learning to hate him every time.

      not sure if it was great writing or a coincidence but there’s five seasons and 4 stages to cancer. if you compare season 1 walt to season 5 walt they are completely different.

    • @error.delete4945
      @error.delete4945 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      @@ThatUnknownPerson7 There is also some parallels to the 5 stages of grief:
      walt is in denial in the first season, feeling numb and disconnected from life. he also denies that he is capable of doing the things he needs to do like killing the drug dealer.
      at the climax of season 1 into 2 Walt starts to adopt the Heisenberg persona, channelling his anger to seek vengeance, allowing his feeling of betrayal by Jesse to justify letting Jane die.
      season 3 sees him bargaining with Gus to spare his life and Jesse, reaffirming to himself and trying to persuade Jesse that he's doing what he's doing to help his family. The fly episode is here also, allowing him to contemplate if he's gone too far.
      season 4 sees a desperate Walt becoming isolated and expecting Gus will kill him when the time is right. Possibly his lowest point of control so far he becomes depressed and gives up hope.
      season 5 is clearly acceptance, punctuated by Walt himself when he finally admits to Skyler that everything he did was for himself. Because he liked it.
      Amazing writing through and through.

    One thing I hadn't realised until I re-watched Breaking Bad is that Walt's actually got it pretty good at one point. In the early days of working for Gus, he no longer had the burden of dealing with distribution -- something that caused no end of problems for Walt & Jesse. All he had to do was turn up, do his job and count his money.
    There were some flies in the ointment:
    1. Walt had become a thrill-seeker in his new life. From the time he cooked that first batch up till the moment he met Fring, Walt had been going full-throttle, was addicted to solving stressful challenges, getting hopped up on adrenaline and being The Man. And then suddenly he's a working stiff in a boring organisation, taking home a tiny percentage of the organisation's profits. Under Fring, Walt is bored, constrained and frustrated. He'd finally taken control of his life, but after bedding in at the superlab, he's (mentally) back at the car wash, with Bogdan telling him what to do.
    2. Skyler had (rightly or wrongly) muscled into Walt's business interests, and was directing various parts of the operation, much to his frustration. FWIW I don't understand the hate for Skyler. If she had real gumption she would've left him, but instead she thought she could be an equal in Walt's business when, unlike Walt, she still had most of her humanity intact.
    So what does Walt when he's back to square one with an unwanted boss and a wife poking her nose into his interests? Blow it all up again. Take control. Build his empire and subjugate his wife.
    Mike said it perfectly:
    "You could've shut your mouth, cooked and made as much money as you ever needed. It was perfect. But, no, you just had to blow it up. You and your pride and your ego! You just had to be the man"
    I think if Season 1 Walter had landed the superlab gig, he would've cooked for a year, banked the money and spent time with his family. By Season 3 or 4, it's too late because a larger cut (or all the money in the world) wouldn't be enough for Walter by that point.

    What’s interesting about Walt is that most of the decisions he makes, on an individual level, make sense, but when these decisions are strung together in a long chronological chain, they become problematic. Walt rationalizes his decisions on an incident-to-incident basis, without real regard for how each decision will affect the next one he must make.

      @MichaelReichman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +245

      You're right; it's an interesting point. But I disagree that his initial cancer remission was seen as positive feedback to keep doing what he was doing.
      If you'll recall, after receiving those results, he was actually upset and punching the paper towel dispenser in the bathroom. I think he's upset because one of the reasons (in the beginning) he broke bad was because he knew his time was limited, and he wouldn't have to live with whatever morally ambiguous decisions he chose.
      With the positive results, he may have been mad because he felt (albeit briefly) conflicted on how much longer he should continue his business. This is because now he would have to "live with himself" longer as Heisenberg. And at that stage of his character development, he didn't know if he could do that.

      @Michael Reichman I think it was that combined with the thought of potentially having to quit soon after having the positive result and going back to his former mundane life, he loves being heisenberg, it gives him purpose and meaning he's never had... he's got respect aswell, which Walt never had. He truly didn't and never did want to stop, but his positive result may force that into reality.
      He'd much rather live and die as heisenberg, setting his family up for life than paying off his medical bills and returning to his previous life as Walter White, a high-school teacher... Skyler wasnt even as important to him as his legacy, all he truly xared about from his previous life was his kids. So when when He got the result, knew he wasn't going to stop and he knew the potential reprecussions long term, that's why he was angry, it was becoming more long term than he orginally thought... he knew with the result and money hes msde was his way out if he chose to take it, but it's not truly what he wanted... he wants to be heisenberg and grow his empire which was only just starting to grow at that point, thinking about quitting after his result kinda brought up those negative emotions of selling his shares and quitting his joint company for 5,000$, there's no quitting for Heisenberg, there's only money, power, pride, purpose, and potential death... although, I don't think he thought that would ever truly happen, his Ego told him he was too smart and multiple steps ahead of everyone, which he normally was. That is until he had to go in to unknown territory to save Jessy, which that almost worked even though he probably believed it was a suicide mission but he owed to Jessy, his "adopted" son. Before that, he thought the only way he was going to die would be if his cancer came back and got him, but not killed while running his empire.

      It’s really cliche at this point to make this distinction, but it’s true: Walt made consistently bad decisions for Walter White, but he made consistently great decisions for Heisenberg. Walter White’s goals were to provide for his family and leave them happy and content when he died. All the decisions you said were indeed terrible at reaching that goal. It got Hank killed and it ruined Skyler, Flynn, and likely Hollys lives.
      But Heisenbergs goals were to be respected and remembered when he died, to build an empire, to have everyone know his name. And those decisions were exactly the right ones to make to achieve Heisenbergs goals. If he has stayed with Grey Matter, either in the 80s or in the course of the show; if he had left the meth business after the first cook; if he had bought out in season 5, no one would’ve remembered him they way they did in Felina and El Camino. To that end, Walt made consistently perfect decisions.

    One thing I find especially interesting is the episode "Fly", I consider it the turning point of Walt's entire character. By that point he got everything he ever wanted, he gets to work with chemistry and he's making loads of money for his family. However at the start of episode we are shown Jesse complaining about the routine of it all by highlighting the dry-cleaners having to punch in for work. The episode then follows Walt ignoring their work and ruining the methbatch by desperately trying to kill a fly. For me this shows that it was never about the money nor the chemistry, it was solely about the adrenaline and the ego. Walt wants to feel "alive" as he points out in the pilot and the only way he can do that is by either being in danger or being danger itself. He never really cared about his family or the chemistry, he only ever cared about himself.

      I agree with some of your analysis, I just think if we box Walter into a corner of black and white then we miss the complexity and depth of this show. He never cared about his family? Never is a strong word. Giving up 80 million and willing to serve a life sentence to let Hank go free says that he cared to me. I’d say he cared for Jesse deep down in spite of using him. So many times getting rid of Jesse would have made it so much easier for Walt. I don’t think Hank would have gotten Walt without Jesse snitching. Definitely anything that would hold up in court. Walt, Gretchen, and Elliot started Gray Matter. I think that’s a template for the show and it’s characters. Jesse and Mike included. Mike isn’t a good guy because he has a cute granddaughter and loves her. He genuinely loves her while being in the drug game and also a murderer. Almost everyone in the show broke bad.

    0:49 This highlights one of Walt's key flaws: his pride. Contrary to what he's saying, he DID have a say in what he did. He could have chosen to stay in Gray Matter and receive the praise he wanted for his contributions to research, but his pride prevented him from doing this, as, according to Vince Gilligan, Walt's realization that Gretchen's family was wealthier than he could ever hope to be, led to him cutting off contact with Gretchen and leaving Gray Matter. His pride is further shown by him having a grudge against Elliot for having the success at Gray Matter that he wanted to have, despite the fact that it was Walt's own fault that he missed out on that success. Ultimately, Walt's pride led to him making decisions that doomed himself, his family, and everything he cared about.

    • @zachrichardson5581
      @zachrichardson5581 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Exactly.
      The real fault in Walt's mentality was his pride.
      When he was an unassuming, regular suburban dad that's not a problem. It doesn't lead him to any real issues besides giving up his career which isn't that bad/crazy.
      However when he pushes his own limits and falls further into the criminal world that pride started manifesting itself with selfish and crude behavior. Actions that eventually lead to him losing focus on why he originally decided to do all this in the first place. It's like he slowly lost touch with who he had been for years and doesn't even realize it's happening because he's blinded by that desire to internally redeem himself.

And just like that i think it should not be possible to make a decision quite as bad. Selling all of his share of the company BEFORE it became so massive is what ruined him, he easily could've kept the shares while distancing himself from the company itself and eventually be rich by selling them once the company became huge, but his pride wouldn't allow that.

      i think what happened is that walter realized what he was and came to accept the monster he became.
      the final episode where he admits to skyler that he didn't do this for his family, he did it for himself. he enjoyed it, and even the last phone call he made to skyler before returning again revealed the monster he'd become. how morally inept, how criminally insane he was, he finally said everything that was on his mind, no more hiding who he really became.
      he spent much of the show lying, manipulating other people and even himself that he had good intentions but the walter white/heisenberg we see by the end is one that has accepted who he is. he has nothing to live for, no family, no money, he destroyed everything he cared about in his pride and wrath and only realized when it was far too late.

      i do agree he changed from his time being 'heisenberg' but to me he is still this totally changed person who has realized the mistakes and accepted what he did and became.

    Did it kill the Old Walt or did it reveal who he wanted to be?
    The answer is complicated, Walt wanted to be self-reliant, proud of his craft and happy with his family. In the beginning, he's a moral person because that's what he believed would get him there. Its the whole philosophy of "Do the right thing and the right things will happen to you." However, through chance, circumstance, bad luck and bad choices, Walt didn't have any of those. He had his family, but he wasn't happy with them. When he got his diagnosis, the hope of being happy with his family was simply not in the cards for him anymore. Then, that priority turned into simply providing for his family. This change of goals became his focus and as Walt became more successful in the meth trade, he saw a chance for his other desires to thrive. With this, Walt's original hopes became his demons and he eventually reached a point where they couldn't coexist anymore. Walt had to choose between his wants for Independence and Success or the Well-being of His Family. Since they were something he wanted for a longer time, Walt's mind chose the former. Then in the end, Walt had nothing, he was broken man brought down by his pride who lost everything he valued. Only then could he admit "I did it for me...."

      I guess it depends on how you would define that "change", since I've heard some pretty convincing takes on both arguments: I agree that you see shades of Heisenberg in early scenes of Breaking Bad, like when he beats on the kids who tease Junior or when he blows up Ken's car, so it seems like his diagnosis just ended up exaggerating parts of him that were already there.
      I don't think he ever would've been Heisenberg completely without the cancer, and the other events that led him to slowly become more and more ruthless. But, on the flipside, he also wouldn't have been Heisenberg without first being Walt: I think the show tells us that all the ingredients were already there, and just waiting for circumstances to unleash them.

    My take on Walter White was that he didn't really change at all he just gradually stopped lying to everyone and himself. He was a extremely egotistical and potentially dangerous man posing as a classic family man. But arguably every virtuous or moral act he made in the show had ulterior motives.
    He went from having strong justification for his actions, to loose justification for his actions, to no justification at all.
    I love at the end where he tells Skylar that he did it for himself, considering throughout the whole show his main reason for doing the things he did was to build up money for his family to thrive after he's gone. But we see some of his actions (rejecting money from his friend, refusing to sell the methalamine, etc) contradicted that. Once Hank (his family member) got in the way of that goal and was indirectly disposed of by Walt, he could no longer self ration that he was doing this for the sake of his family, and the facade he put up for himself crumbled.
    Its my belief that the final episode was the first time Walt was completely honest throughout the show.

      Somebody once said that the intros also effect this. In Better Call Saul, the intros slowly distort by the seasons because Jimmy wasn't always a monster. Breaking Bad's intro was always the same, because deep down, Walter was always a monster.

    • @Longshanks1690
      @Longshanks1690 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s the fundamental difference between Walter and Jimmy.
      Jimmy, in his journey to become Saul, abandoned all his principles and transformed into someone completely unrecognisable to who he once was as he gave up trying to be the person he wanted Chuck to see and accepted that he was the person Chuck always had seen.
      Walter, in his journey to become Heisenberg, didn’t so much change as feed the impulses, pride, arrogance and greed that had always been lurking under the surface, buried by years of being humbled by a career as a high school teacher but only grew the second they had an opportunity to manifest themselves.
      It’s also why their characters end the way they do. Walt accepts that what he did was for him, and dies in the knowledge that he was finally honest about who he is. Jimmy had a genuine redemption at the end and wanted to be the person he was at the start of the show again, not the person he’d become.w
      To put it simpler, Saul was a mask for Jimmy but Walter White was the mask for Heisenberg.

    I relate so much to this serie because of my dad who passed away last year of a lung cancer and his story, but hopefully he didn't break that bad even he spent years dealing cocain (no joke). He was like a reversed Walter White.

    The scene of Walter strangling Crazy 8 is so reminiscent of when The Sapranos broke the barriers of what you can and cannot do on TV, when we seen Tony, unprovoked, strangle the rat. Both, in my opinion were awesome.
    On another thought, I have to think the rivalry between Gus and Walter, has got to be the best feud in TV history.
