The Last Working Steam Locomotives in Java - Kanigoro Sugar Mill

  • Was this the last ever video of a live/genuine/real working steam locomotive (other than fireless) in Java? O&K 0-8-0T (9447/1921) pulls loris of cane from the loading point, before reversing into the mill at Kanigoro. Days after I left on 13 August 2015, I got word that steam had finished at Kanigoro. Some visitors are planning to run charters here in 2016, but this could be it for a genuine steam working. It was only being used occasionally when there was enough cane to warrant extra help anyway. And then generally very early in the morning which made photography difficult as either there was no light or it was shining straight into the camera. Only on a short section of the track does the light get in the right position. You just had to hope the engine still had some work to do by mid morning to get the shot. This loco had a "Thomas" nameplate fitted above the firebox in 2014. Thankfully this had been removed.
Pangka, Sumberharjo, Sragi, Tasik Madu and Olean all stopped using steam locomotives in 2014/15. Only Kanigoro, Purwodadi and the fireless locomotives of Patgottan and Semboro were the only possible genuine remaining steam locations left in Java, Indonesia for 2015. The mills are still using big stationary steam engines, fuelled by the bagasse, which are interesting enough themselves. One of the reasons given for no longer using the steam locos is that they wanted to use all of the bagasse for the mill engines.

Judging by what looks to be an axle-box at the back of the frame, it used to be a 0-8-2.

+Steve Young I see what you mean but there is no mention on the Industrial Steam Locomotives of Java of it being re-configured.

Unlikely. An axle box would never be fitted rigidly to the frame, both in suspension and swivel, on an eight couple loco designed for uneven track. It's some other fitting, probably ashpan related.

They should have been inspected annually. The cost of the annual inspection resulted in some engines 10 years ago held in reserve being dumped as it wasn't worth keeping them going.

Very tired loco in a very tired mill, as starting from 2016 the mill stopped in every single operations.

Strong, clean and even exhaust, minimal steam leaks, no trouble starting, looked to be in quite fine fettle by my thinking, even if the cosmetics were a bit rough.
