Balloon Festival, Taunggyi, Myanmar 2013

The balloons with fireworks are lit in a similar way to the candle covered balloons. The balloon is filled with hot air from a handheld torch (fuel soaked bamboo log). Then a "permanent" fuel source is installed (a larger, fuel soaked bamboo structure). As the balloon lifts, it is attached to a rack covered with fireworks.
At this point, things can easily go wrong. If the balloon catches fire, it crashed down with a few hundred pounds of lit fireworks and bamboo structure. A lot of locals told us many, many times how dangerous is was, and that we shouldn't be anywhere near the launch site. We always smiled, agreed, and then got closer. There is no concept of a security perimeter; if you get hurt, you were obviously in the wrong place by choice.
