Airbnb can be an adventure. It does give more varied locations than hotels, has kitchen which I love to eat what I want, when I want with jet lag, is cheaper than hotels. and often gives a flavor of the local culture. Over the 10 years or so, I have had two misses with Airbnb. I have also had two miss with a hotel (where they gave away my room because my flight was late and charged me anyway). Apartment hotels can work in places like New York,. Outside that, they usually in inconvenient places. So net, Airbnb has been a better experience .
I used to be an airbnb loyalist; until the fees made booking about the same if not more for a decent hotel. Once I got into the cc game; I ditched airbnb permanently. Hotel status; late checkout, free breakfast; come and go as you please, earn points, etc.
It's amazing how badly chase nerfed pyb. Glad i cashed out what i did during the pandemic when the categories were useful (grocery), and at the 1.5 rate it should be. Might have to get the AR for the same result with less hassle at some point

Air BnB has been good for us staying in Europe vs hotel prices there, but if you can strategize to earn enough points for hyatts AND get the bookings early enough (Paris is a pain in the ass to reserve) then Hyatts beat most Airbnb I’d normally stay at in Europe.

With combined credit cards and stays I had like 70 or 71 nights had platinum went in and selected bonus elite night credit reward, and it looks like it applied instantly and towards 2023 so I’m now titanium 😊. I with they would provide more incentives towards suite night awards though, especially unused ones. Last year I had like 5 having selected them early last year, but they ended up expiring because the one use case I had hoped to use them , that stay didn’t end up panning out for us

Preferring hotels over AirBnB is such a good take. I never loved it compared to hotel bookings, but especially with the fee creep nowadays it is very hard to justify that option unless it is a big family trip. Also "pay yourself back" was amazing when I got 1.5x point value on restaurants. Especially great for business travel where you get cash back when you're not even footing the bill anyways.
Sebby question for you! For the chase freedom unlimited, it refers to earning “cash back” but does this really mean earning Ultimate Reward points just as other chase cards like Preferred or Sapphire Reserve?

so it sounds like you can get a Chase Freedom Flex card to get points, then later, get a CSP or CSR card to transfer the points for travel. Can you do the same with Citi cards? like get a double cash first to get points, then get the premier?
Yes, the custom and double cash technically earn points that are used for cash back, but you can stash them until you get the premier and then transfer them over so you can use transfer partners, similar to the chase freedom cards
Being in the points game I prefer hotels but my wife loves vacation rentals like VRBO for spacious accommodations. I end up doing the laundry so she gets to have the relaxing vacation 😂
Besides all of the reasons you mentioned, I stopped supporting Air BnB when everyone and their mom and their dog decided they wanted to be a landlord and/or Air BnB owner. These people are a HUGE part of the problem with the housing market. I applaud the cities that have outlawed short term rentals.
