English in a Minute: The Bottom Line

  • Welcome to English in a Minute! This piece of paper has lines at the top, middle and bottom.
    But what does “the bottom line” mean?
    AM: Andrew, did you watch the baseball game last night?
    AS: Yes, I did. And I saw us lose, again. We need some new players.
    AM: Well, they’re getting better. And they tried really hard!
    AS: Yeah, they try hard, but the bottom line is, you have to hit the ball to win.
    AM: They weren’t hitting.
    The bottom line means the most basic or important thing to consider in a situation.
    "Bottom line” can also be used to mean the final result or outcome.
    And that’s English in a Minute!
