In this comprehensive discussion, our host Brighton West sits down with Armando Rios Piter, a former senator and presidential candidate, to delve into the recent monumental changes in Mexico's political sphere. The conversation highlights the implications of Mexico's recent major election, which resulted in the historic election of the first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and significant shifts in various political offices across the nation.
    *Key Topics Covered:*
    1. **Historic Re-Election of Senators and Congressmen**: For the first time in Mexico's history, senators and congressmen can now seek re-election for a second term. This significant change opens up discussions about the potential impacts on political stability and policy continuity.
    2. **Claudia's Presidential Mandate**: With a background in sustainability and ecology, President Claudia Sheinbaum is expected to steer Mexico towards innovative energy solutions while focusing on critical issues such as safety, violence, and judicial reforms. Learn how her leadership could shape Mexico's future.
    3. **Economic Insights**: Discover the latest on Mexico's minimum wage, which could be tied to inflation, with potential discussions slated for 2025. Additionally, we explore the fluctuating exchange rate between the peso and the dollar, offering predictions for future economic shifts under the new administration.
    4. **US-Mexico Relations**: Regardless of the outcome of the US presidential elections, the relationship between the US and Mexico remains a focal point. Armando Rios Piter emphasizes the strategic alliance between the two countries, covering key topics like migration, fentanyl, and national security. Brighton West also weighs in on the potential impacts of a Biden or Trump win, including how either administration could affect economic and diplomatic ties.
    5. **Foreign Investment and NAFTA**: Mexico continues to attract significant foreign investments, particularly from China and Asia, thanks to its proximity to the US and the trade treaty with Canada and the USA (formerly NAFTA). Learn why Mexico is becoming an increasingly strategic player in the global economic arena.
    6. **Fourth Transformation and Social Programs**: Delve into the "fourth transformation" of Mexico, marked by the rise of the left party, Morena. This transformation underscores efforts to implement social programs aimed at tackling poverty and income inequality-a crucial element for the country’s development.
    7. **Investment Opportunities**: For those interested in investing in Mexico, Armando recommends Actinver, a bank offering a range of investment options such as bond funds, CDs, and access to the Mexican stock exchange.
    8. **Citizen Participation and Democratic Security**: The discussion extends into the security of Mexico's election process and the growing participation of Mexican citizens residing abroad, especially in the United States. Armando underscores the importance of sustaining the integrity of democratic processes and the role of expatriates in shaping the country’s future.

Wonderful interview!! I loved the questions and the explanations about the elections. I personally was able to witness some positive changes in the social assistance during AMLO's presidency. Many people who were previously forced to either low paying jobs or even begging in the streets are now encouraged through social help to have a better life. For example, several people who I know with quite severe disabilities are now able to receive monetary assistance in addition to their low paying jobs this extra assistance allows them to work more reasonable hours, while improving housing and food... kind of like how in the states people can qualify for Food stamps or rent assistance so they do not become homeless. There are VERY few homeless in Mexico in comparison, but often the home they live in is very substandard. As much as MANY of us chose Mexico to escape politics in the US, unfortunately politics will always have an impact on us regardless. THANK YOU Brighton, for bringing this thoughtful interview to all of us.

I’m happy to see that you’re trying to enlighten the U.S. and Canadian citizens about our historic elections and how they impact the many people wanting to come to Mexico. First let me say that Claudia Sheinbaum was elected in such an overwhelming way because she was a cofounder of Morena and she was the one chosen to represent their party in the presidential race and she promised to continue the 4th Transformation which has as a prime move to make Mexico energy independent. She will also continue to expand and improve the railway system, improving the renewable energy production, making the Canadian and U.S. companies pay their fair share to the government and Mexico instead of the corrupt leaders heading the posts for their gains. I agree that USMCA is a treaty that is positive for all of North America! Also the Transisthmic railway will greatly improve the movement of goods from the Pacific to the Atlantic coasts along with the 10 Industrial parks to be built along this route for added value to the merchandise that will be transported!

It seemed to me that Armando didn’t really twig to the connection between how increasing the Mexican minimum wage results in higher financial requirements for foreigners applying to immigrate to Mexico. In my experience, this is understandably high on ”expats”/immigrants’ radar, and essentially nonexistent on most Mexicans’ radar, apart from those who work in the field. What I find the most hilarious are the expats of a more elitist bent loudly crowing that Mexico is trying to keep the riffraff out by increasing financial requirements, when it’s really the result of a more socially-minded, leftist government improving the plight of the poorest in Mexico through increasing the minimum wage. Claudia has indicated that the minimum wage will continue to be raised in January 2025. The impact on potential immigrants’ qualifying income is in effect an unintended consequence, which will continue unless a decision is made to decouple qualifying income from the minimum wage.

    • @AlmostRetiredinMexico
      @AlmostRetiredinMexico  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Yeah - I'm guessing the government will change the formula for residency. It's getting so that only very wealthy USers can come. And I don't think that's the intention or necessarily good for the country.
And actually, I found that the minimum wage increase is tied to Trump and the new NAFTA. Trump wanted wages in Mexico to be closer to US wages. Who would have thought Trump did something good for poor Mexicans?
I count that in his short list of accomplishments. That and... well... just that.

    • @mwiebe2663

Pete is about the smartest politician out there. But being gay would stop so many bigots from voting for him. Hind sight being 20/20 they should have been grooming someone for the role knowing full well Biden would age so quickly in that role. i.e. Look how fast the Obama's appeared to age when he was in. The Orange 1 didn't age too bad but then again he also didn't do anything and he was nuts going in.

You need to open your account in person. I'm not sure if Actinver can open an account if you don't have residency yet (but you don't need to actually live here to get residency.) Some banks will allow tourists to open accounts - but it always has to happen in person at a branch.

    It’s not complicated guys:
AMLO and Claudia share same principles and objectives but each has their personal style of governance, that’s it. It’s gonna be the continuation of the 4T (the political project) but with Claudias own governing style. It’s the consolidation of the political project. Trust me, really good things will happen to mexico REGARDLESS of the US government usual attempts of meddling in Mexican internal affairs
