Neil Young's "Long May You Run" - Historical Background

  • I was having breakfast in Blind River Ontario and decided to do a quick bit of research into Neil Young's reference to the town. Apparently, Neil's hearse ("Mort") broke down outside of town with transmission troubles. He and his band spent 4 or 5 days there and drove out of town, in Mort, once the repairs were finished. Germaine, Bert's wife, confirms that it was 1962, not 1963 - she was pregnant with her son at the time and is, therefore, certain of the date.

I've been enamoured of Neil Young's creative genius since 1st time seeing him play "Hurricane" on evening music show (Midnight Special?) when I was in 3rd grade. Even as a child, I sensed magic in his music & lay there in my sleeping bag, transfixed before the boob-tube, until foamy echoes of band's last notes faded to silent mist. That one performance earned Neil & Co. a lifelong fan. "Long May You Run," as well, Mr. Young! 🤠

"Neil drove a 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse he named Mortimer Hearseburg
Neil's beloved Pontiac hearse, "Mort" (a.k.a. "Mortimer Hearseburg"), was the inspiration for this song. Neil drove "Mort" from Toronto to Los Angeles, where he met Stephen Stills and formed Buffalo Springfield.
Neil was in Canada driving to Sudbury when 'Mort' broke down in Blind River, June 1965. (Which is contradictory to the lyrics; "well it was back in Blind River, in 1962, when I last saw you alive")."

Neil told my Old Man that the song was mostly about a dog that he had, and had died suddenly on him...But as with Neil and my Old Man, the stories only depended on which side you got out of the bed that morning...Everything thing is relative, I guess!?!?!?...LOL

Sounds suspicious...all the written accounts say it was actually Iron Bridge (Neil apparently got it wrong) and they definitely weren't heading to Wawa but were going the other way down to Toronto. If my memory serves me, the rest of the band chickened out and headed back to Winnipeg via Wawa and Thunder Bay while Neil headed south to follow his obsession.

    • @normruttan

Agree. There's a long hill up west of Thessalon heading east...around the "Round Barn" area and then a long hill back down just west of Iron Bridge.
