    Courtney saying that she feels pressured to be her best self and is working on it in therapy, which is in a sense striving for her best self was a paradox that really resonated with me. For anyone feeling this way, I'd like to suggest something: you're not going to therapy to be your best self, you're going to therapy to be your happiest self and your healthiest self. You are already your best self. You are not doing yourself a disservice by talking steps to better your mental health.

    I love how after Shayne got his degree, there were jokes about how he’s not gonna use it. But he DOES- and on a super public platform. So many of the concepts and beliefs he shares are truly helpful and relatable. I love the idea of feeling called to do something, putting in all of the work, and it working out in an unexpected (but possibly more impactful) way.

    • @daanachmad4032
      @daanachmad4032 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +48

      The thing is Shayne is also an empathetic person who tries his best to not be too judgmental.
      He is using his psychology knowledge to treat his fellow human beings as best as he can.
      Unfortunately, knowledge does not always come with ethics and morality.

    • @Richiroo15
      @Richiroo15 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      It's also important to realize that there is a real possibility that he won't be doing this forever. He now has a back up plan and really good one. In my opinion there is no such thing as not using a degree as long you learned what you needed to and are now using what you learned in your life. Even if it is simply being logical, analytical, curious, quick witted or having a large vocabulary, insights into the world that others might not or being able to ask the right questions and problem solve etc. I think we get so stuck on thinking we need to use our degrees directly but there are a million ways we can use them indirectly. I have an Anthropology and Environmental Studies degree - I have never worked in the field but there has been countless times that I have used my degree - be it while in nature, in conversation, in debate or attempts to have the person change their ways or see things differently, in understanding society/social things etc - I can go to the museum and not even read anything because I already know. I can read people better than I ever could.

    thinking about childhood lunches brought me so far back I cried. I lost my mom in 2021 and its been a long winding experience into adulthood on my own. Its small moments like this that bring back memories and so much appreciation to my childhood. Thank you for that. My mom used to pack me a combination of uncrustables/lunchables, fruit rollups/gogurt, sunny D/caprisun and a little heart shaped sticky note that said to have a good day. and on specials days I would get cookies too.

    I really appreciated Noah's response to "What motivates you to do stuff?" because before I didn't really feel validated but he answered it exactly the way I would. I agree with feeling like at some point you "have to try you best" but also the motivation can come from pure stimulation. Sometimes I just continue doing something tedious because I actually get joy out of creating stuff or feeling like I'm in my own brain. I like to feel like I'm experiencing everything uniquely as an individual, as well.
    I think that's also why it's difficult for some people to commit to a task or project when it doesn't involve their personal interests. Something basic that doesn't allow creativity will not be very stimulating for most people and that creates a lack of motivation.

    48:24 it’s so weird because I’m a girl and every sleepover I was a part of was just like how Shayne and Tommy described their experiences. We’d play board games, video games, or watch shows/movies. The parents always made or at least provided tons of food and drink for us.
    I also never experienced the lack of blankets and shit. I never related to those jokes.
    51:53 my best friend growing up went into the woods behind his house, which had a trail. We were like… 8? So I have NO clue how far or long we *actually* walked, but it felt like hours and miles. We came out eventually to a road, and we fully believed we had walked into another state entirely 🤣
    Our parents were *freaking the fuck out,* of course, and we were eventually found, but holy shit. It was an adventure.
    WE didn’t feel lost, it was one simple, just extremely long trail, but we hadn’t considered telling anyone where we were going 🤦🏻

    Just for reference, if you go hiking, camping, fishing, whatever in Colorado, stop at Walmart and BUY A COLORADO FISHING LICENSE! This way if you get lost or hurt, search and rescue is paid for. As far as I know, Colorado is one of the few states that does that. That's my PSA for the day.

    I can relate to Courtney saying they feel two years younger than their actual age, but on a larger scale. I was 6 months past my 21st birthday when I became ill with a chronic illness. It ended up disabling me. I'm going to be 36 in December and I still feel like I'm in my early 20s because I didn't have the....experiences that you hear about people having.
    I had only just gotten a job I loved. And I had to quit it. And because of being disabled, things like traveling, dating, etc. are extremely hard for various reasons. I live with my parents not only out of convenience, but necessity. So yeah, I feel sometimes like my age stopped during my early 20s.

    I love Tommy and Noah are honest enough to be like “I don’t think I try my best” because that’s really how I feel.
    I have this very strange relationship to hard work. Were I’ve seen that motivation and that ambition really destroy people around me, mostly while growing up.
    So there’s a lot I want to achieve but trying my hardest is something that just dosent happen for me. And I’m glad Noah and Tommy had the courage to say that too.

    30:36 This part from Shayne made me remember something i sadly can't remember where i heard it from. It was something about that trauma never gets easier, you just get stronger. To visualize it i know they talked about a person as if they where a glass jar full of cotton. Trauma would stain the cotton black, if bad enough the whole jar would go black. But as you age the jar grows and gets filled with more cotton, but the black parts never get smaller. But in the whole context of you as a person you are so much more then the blackness in you, new white pure cotton will fill up the empty spaces made from growing. You grow to be such a big person with age, and that is why "things get better with time". This changed how i look at other people and myself for the better.

    Really liked this! My best lost story was when I did an exchange through Rotary International when I was 17 and my 20-something host sister left me, someone who only knew a handful of Japanese words at the time, in the middle of Osaka to fend for myself because she didn’t want to deal with a high schooler and left me to hang with her friends. It took me like 3 hours to find my way back to their home in the suburbs. The train from Osaka to the city my host sister lived in was not hard-it was getting back from the local train station that took the most time. Unless you are in a MAJOR city-Japan does not do street names and many of the homes look similar so since it was my first time on my own in the area, it took me a while to find the right street-like an hour - and the station was really not far. As someone who went on to live another 2 years in Japan I’m a little embarrassed in myself for not paying more attention but I was 17 and really didn’t expect to get left on my own so 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Props to what Courtney brought up at 24:07 about being affected by one’s upbringing towards fixating on being their “best self” and constantly vying for some kind of perfection. They hit the nail on the head with mentioning it and therapy, where it’s second nature to endlessly examine and criticize oneself beyond reason- even in naturally “unflattering” processes like healing and learning.
    Tommy connected to a lot of people by admitting how the fear of failure or “less than perfect” so deeply motivates us. One thing I really respect the cast for is their vulnerability and willingness to learn and grow while showing grace & maturity. Used a lot of quotations here for lack of better words, but one of the top comments put it best in saying that we don’t go to therapy to become our best self; we go to become a healthier and happier self, but are already our best selves. There is no goalpost that will move. You’ll be alright.

    Answering the childhood lunch question as a UK child, I wasn’t allowed to bring a backpack to school all we were allowed was a “reading bag” which was basically this super thin laptop bag that carried pieces of paper and think books in. But somehow my mum managed to sneak me a lucozade in and packed me a banging pasta. It was pasta with lettuce, prawns apple chunks, cheese cubes and mayonnaise mixed with ketchup. It sounds horrid until you try it.

    Like I’ll figure it out when I need to figure it out so let it be.
