I don't like squad mechanic, it's more of a hindrance with how COOP is just a splash fest. I also noted that recruits are dumb because their are basic follow the unit AI, I would much prefer standard unit control over squads. In summary squad mechanic is wonky and not worth the hustle, individual units can do a better job.
you should get one melee squad, they can get like 20 armor and 30% damage reduction which basically makes them unkillable and an amazing frontline, i think what youre describing is infiltrator squad just being bad. dont make more of those besides the one you get in the beginning. their invisibility is useful early game and to airstrike bases later on but thats it. the marines are just way tankier and do more damage once u get the laser
youre saying the squads targeting is bad but you can literally focus fire anything with the entire squad. i focus fire photon cannons as infiltrator squad when im invisible for example and the entire squad shoots it. and youre saying they are squishy but thats why theres a damage reduction mastery and damage reduction as well as armor (+4 armor btw) upgrade for the melee squad and marine squad which makes them super tanky so only the infiltrator squad is kinda squishy which is what i said. i dont ever experience the issues you describe, quite the opposite actually, they can tank for days. and i was commenting on the reasons from your main comment as to why u dont like the squad mechanic in case youve found new reasons not to like it
