Forgot to answer your question. I Mamamoo twice during the US segment of their My Con tour in 2023 and Wheein earlier this year at the last stop of her solo world tour in Brooklyn, NY. They were terrific of course. The luckiest fans were those who got to see their legendary 4+ hour long 4 Seasons F/W concerts in 2019, which included a live band and spectacular solo stages by each of the members. Mamamoo is at their best when they're live. They live for the stage and in their early days they'd make up to 3 or 4 appearances a day. They were one of the groups most affected by the pandemic.

@@OGzReacts When you've got the time you can find a professionally filmed video of a 4 Seasons F/W concert with Eng subs when they talk to the audience. It's one jaw-drop moment after another including new arrangements of hit songs and 15-25 minute solo stages by the members that are truly legendary and iconic. Chinese moomoos said the final concert in Hong Kong that ended the 4 Seasons F/W tour ran 5 hours. Who does that?!

I think maybe you misunderstood the part about limited creativity. This part talked about how other groups have limited creativity or input in the songs. The companies want to control everything. With Mamamoo, they were allowed to have a part in the making of the songs, melodies and music videos.

Yea I agree, the title of the first one would’ve made more sense if it was “under appreciated”. Just me speculating, but I feel like they may be called it underrated because even though they’ve had insane success as the years went on they still aren’t as popular overseas as many other groups. And when you ask people of about their favorite K-pop groups, for some reason, Mamamoo Rarely seems to be mentioned (I’m basing that mostly on reactors I watch and some TikTok’s I’ve seen where they ask people on campus about their favorite idols and groups). So in some ways it can feel like they are underrated even among fans when you consider not just their talent, but also what amazing humans they are. But part of that is on the company for poor international marketing, so not much the fans can do in that regard.
And yes- there is definitely a difference between “idols” and “artists”. As I understand it, in Korea some people even look down a little on idols when people consider them to be singers, because they aren’t held to the same caliber as artists are. And to be fair, as you said, idols don’t just focus on their singing so often times they aren’t developing their skills in the same way an artist would.
I’ve heard idols even say they didn’t have formal vocal training. Maybe they just got some basics during their trainee years, but outside of that they don’t get much more vocal coaching. So it’s not really fair to compare them to artists whose sole job is to produce good vocals. Having said that, I think that just proves how amazing Mamamoo’s vocal talent is. Cause they started strong, but somehow have still improved their technique through the years.

To be fair, Mamamoo was quite popular overseas until they started going their separate ways. For example, their first US tour in 2022 beat Blackpink's first US tour, which is no small feat. I think people simply forget to mention Mamamoo because Mamamoo is the least competitive group I've ever seen - they don't think about branding or marketing strategy at all, but simply present themselves exactly as they are (goofy, talented, fun, confident). And because the members themselves are so true to themselves, they've fostered one of the least obsessive fandoms in Kpop. Even their company seems to respect what the members want to do with their careers.
It's why Mamamoo is considered THE female empowerment girl group of 3rd gen Kpop, but it's also why they didn't get the recognition either. The group simply floated whichever way felt right to them with very little marketing strategy or competitive spirit, and the fans always respected that without caring about numbers, so Mamamoo ended up coasting along without "making history" or shattering any crazy records.
Which, as a fan myself, is kinda nice. Mamamoo was serious, SERIOUS competition to the Big 3 girl groups back then (I'd even argue they might've blown Blackpink and Twice out of the water with better marketing strategies), but at least it didn't come with the baggage of an obsessive fandom. It's nice to support a talented and successful group without having to go hog-wild toxic like so many other Kpop fandoms do. Popularity be damned I say.

The title of the first video was intended to be clickbait. Underappreciated is probably a better way to describe MMM but underrated is not entirely inaccurate if you compare their world class talent and artistry vs their sales and popularity. Mamamoo albums typically sell around 100K whereas the most popular groups' albums sell in the millions, even rookie groups from big agencies. So it's not that they're unsuccessful but considering they're one of the world's top female vocal groups you'd think their album sales would be at least roughly on the same scale as the most popular kpop girl groups rather than a small fraction of those artists.
The point you were making about the limited creativity allowed to artists under the big 3 or 4 agencies is exactly what the video was trying to say. Instead of the usual format for girl groups where an agency selects members whose looks and skills fit a pre-determined marketing strategy such as cute, innocent, sexy or girl crush and matches it with music commissioned to suit the group concept, RBW formed Mamamoo with the idea of promoting them as artists rather than teen idols. From the beginning the members have been involved in all creative aspects of their career including songwriting (lyrics and music), arranging, choreography, styling and MV concepts. And since they weren't limited to a specific group concept and musical style they've been free to explore many genres and consequently they have an extremely diverse discography ranging from jazz, r&b, hip hop and latin pop to bossa nova, rock, EDM, reggaeton, ballads and more and they've proven their ability to pull off any style of music with ease and authenticity. Solar even did a country song for a kdrama OST that sounds like it was recorded in Nashville rather than Seoul. Koreans say Mamamoo can sing anything and write a song about anything and they summed up their respect for the group by inventing the slang phrase BeLisMaMoo: Believe and Listen to Mamamoo.

MAMAMOO is well-recognized in Korea as a successfully Kpop group as we can see comments by Korean fans. The "underrated" is often mis-used by new international fans who approach the nowadays large-scale kpop. They only see the numbers in charts but didn't know the scale of the markets are quite different across generations, so they under-appreciate and overlook the influence of previous kpop generations and call them irrelevant. The sale of some active kpop artists from earlier generations in offline activities such as concerts are actually quite good even their fans are less active online because mature fans are busy in real life. I think there are are also some misconceptions in the first intro video as busking on street is actually very common in South Korea, even artists from big companies do that, and MAMAMOO actively participating in producing their projects such as doing their choreography doesn't means their company doesn't have money to hire a choreographer for them. If we watch MAMAMOO documentary Where Are We Now, we can see they have dance teacher/choreographer helping them. Indeed, they were relatively less resourceful compared to big companies, but they were praised for being self-produced idols, which was also a successful producing and marketing strategy. This kind of creativity and freedom actually agrees with you about smaller companies with limited budges doesn't really mean it limits their creativity and it's often quite the opposite as we see some big companies put more constraints on their artists and give them less freedom.

Love your reaction. Yes, it was such a great experience for attending a MAMAMOO concert. I was lucky to attend one last year in Taipei, even I had to fly from Europe to Taiwan. It was phenomenal and one of my most precious memories. But I did get chances to see solo concerts by Solar, Wheein, and MoonByul in the past few months. I still need to see Hwasa in person. What was even more luckier was that I got to see Solar's 2nd musical Notre Dame de Paris in Seoul, South Korea in this March. I missed her debut musical Mata Hari in 2022, which was really famous and she was double-leading with the Korean musical empress Ock Joo-hyun, especially Solar was directly casted by the famous musical director Kim Moon-Jeong without audition. It was a pity that so-far the best MAMAMOO fan-made introductory video neglected her musical career, and her official solo project Solar Emotion remake series from 2015 as new fans don't know how big the influence of Solar Emotion is since it's so loved by her fans, and there was a total of 5 days Solar Emotion concert Blossom back in 2018, 3 days in Seoul and 2 days encore in Busan. Particularly, she was the first 3rd generation kpop idol to hold a solo concert, 2 years before her solo debut single Spit it Out in 2020^^

MAMAMOO girls are so talented and love them all. I'm not a fan of the first video even it is probably the best MAMAMOO intro video recently. Some have pointed out the clickbait title and personally I don't like the way of its subjective narrative. Then, my main complain is the mins to introduce individual members decrease significantly according its order, plus saying Solar was just at the start of her solo journey is unfair because it omits greatly about her Solar Emotion series which is considered a masterpiece by many fans and her musical adventure which is even bigger in terms of solo career, not to mention she was the first 3th gen idol to hold a solo concert back in 2018. If it was more balanced, I'd have saved these words.

Speaking of Solar being one of the best vocalists and she doesn't sound like idols but more like a solo singer, indeed, she's well-recognized by her fans and music industry as she's often invited as judges in different music competition programs. If you dive into MAMAMOO's huge discography and Solar's solo projects, you will find her vocal prowess is way beyond skills and power but with versatility and various voices. Though she was the oldest in the group, she was the last to start her training around 21, considering very late for idols.
In fact, all MAMAMOO members are amazing vocalists, and none of them sounds like a typical Kpop idol. I literally thought they were 4 veteran soloists who assembled to perform for the 2016 Blue Dragon Film Awards when I was only into Korean movies and dramas. They sounded so mature and powerful, and their stage presences were like no others, especially the way they teased those actors and actresses, who were usually very tense in the awards ceremony, with ad-libs about lines in their famous movies not made everyone laugh so hard but became a legend. Subsequently, they got invited again next year and in many other awards. Later, when I noticed more live performances by them on TH-cam, I just can't stop watching them and ultimately become their fans.

They're widely recognized as the best vocal group of the third generation of female k-pop groups, just as Wendy from Red Velvet is as the individually best. So as others point out underrated is arguable bit off the mark. Maybe given their talent not as commercially appreciated compared to their peers.

RBW never gave mamamoo a large budget, so they had to self produce much of their work, even busking to promote. The larger companies have hordes of people to produce everything and marketing power mamamoo lacks. Now they are in their early 30s, so they are even more directly controlling their music and productions but they still dont get large marketing budgets, their world tour was barely promoted though they did very well in the US cities which was their first time touring the USA last year and I did see them live, they really do have those extreme vocals in live performances.

I'd disagree about Solar being the best in Mamamoo. Solar definitely has the power of a main vocalist, but many fans would agree that Wheein is the best technical vocalist. She reaches high notes more effortlessly than Solar, she has the best low notes, her control is insane, there's no strain whatsoever, etc. Even Solar herself said that she's afraid to sing Wheein's solo songs like Anymore (which is a vocal monster of a song for sure), and I remember her saying during their debut years that she doesn't consider herself to be the best singer in Mamamoo.

@@underthegardenwall This is funny as many fans would disagree with you. Solar has always been humble and every fan knows she slayed Anymore in a MAMAMOO behind the scene video. And how about Wheein herself said she almost d1ed to sing Anymore?! Besides, Solar said Moonbyul is in charge of high notes unofficially in MAMAMOO and she is the best to hit high notes among them. Wheein is brilliant and talented but saying her doing high notes more effortlessly than Solar is pointless as their techniques and music are very different. Many judgements are very subjective and based on preferences. If you have watched the behind video that I mentioned, Solar explained it was the placement near throat that she doesn't like in singing while at the same time she could sing tougher Mata Hari musical numbers. So, Hwasa didn't let her to use the excuse to get away from singing Wheein's song and called Solar Mata Hari to bait her to sing more than she slayed Anymore hard, "effortlessly". Using Solar's own humble words to against her is not cool. If you really like to compare vocal skills, I'd recommend you to search latest mamamoo vocal rankings than you would get different ideas about who is singing high notes more effortlessly and who has the best low notes. But people should understand those vocal rankings are still based on preferences.
