Hi, since they are an IB school, that offers IB Language A in Chinese, I would say their Chinese curriculum is pretty rigorous. Here is what NAIS officially says about their Chinese curriculum: "All students study Mandarin from aged 3 years upwards, we teach Mandarin and Simplified Chinese characters. Nursery - Primary Year 1 have daily Mandarin, Primary 2 to Primary 4 have 7 hours of Mandarin every 2 weeks, for Primary Year 5, students have 5 hours of Mandarin and 2 hours of Spanish every 2 weeks while Primary Year 6 students have 5 hours of Mandarin and 2 hours of French every 2 weeks. Mandarin is the only subject that we do stream students for as some will have this as a ‘home’ language, for others it would be as ‘Second Language speakers’ and for many it would be as a ‘foreign language’ just as is it would be if they were studying French or Spanish. In primary, we place students to different groups/classes only according to their Chinese proficiency. We group students to 3 mainstream Mandarin sets: foreign language set, second language set and first language Mandarin set. Teachers will conduct formative assessments (such as various classroom activities, games, group work, etc) before placing them to the most appropriate group, where students feel the most comfortable and confident, at the same time, being challenged. When students move to secondary, they will need to choose two languages between Mandarin, Spanish and French. In Year 7-11, we have first language Mandarin group, second language Mandarin group and foreign language Mandarin group. In Y12-13, we offer Mandarin ab initio, Mandarin language B, and Mandarin language A for our students."
