      Since you mentioned the turbo grafx express, you should have mentioned the super grafx LT as well. It's the first home console I know of that had a clamshell style built in tv/speaker system, it was also in color, and it even has the controller built right into the top of the console! It's definitely one of coolest/strangest console designes I have ever seem. Looks like a giant Gameboy sp! They are pretty rare and go for well over $1000 on internet auction sites. Very cool though! Thanks for the videos!

      Calling the Super Nintendo a "true 16-bit machine" with it's 16-bit internally but 8-bit externally (data bus) Ricoh CPU (essentially just a beefed out version of the NES chip), is kind of a bit sketch when that is far, far, FAR from a cut and dry claim. In fact, there's just as valid an argument for why the SNES WASN'T an actual 16-bit console as for why it is.
      The only popular console of that generation that used a proper 16-bit architecture was the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis with it's class leading Motorola 68000 CPU pulled straight from desktop computers thanks to an AMAZEBALLS bulk purchasing deal Sega landed with Moto. In fact, the 68000 was actually a 32-bit CPU internally, which in addition to it's crazy high (for the time/market) 9MHz+ clock-speeds made it by FAR the most powerful CPU in any of that generations consoles (on the order of 4x more powerful than the SNES' CPU), though the external data bus (and thus the Mega Drive's broader system architecture) was 16-bit (which wouldn't change for the Moto CPU's till the 2nd Gen 68020).

    The Super Grafx is a beautiful looking console. I like how it looks like an engine to a space ship from some 80's sci-fi movie.
    Wish the damn thing wasn't so expensive now, and requires either internal modding or a pricey homebrew add-on just to get it to output video that's component or RGB, instead of the terrible low-res Composite or RF a/v output. :( Like FFS the console like around $350~$500 now from most resellers on ebay. :(

      I was thinking something similar: The "New NEC TurboGrafX." It's a proven formula! Take your system, make a minor upgrade, slap the word new on it, make about five games that use the upgrades, then say "screw it" cancel the original system and force everyone to buy the new version even though you're not making games for it.

I have to show them the pictures (which you do show in the corner) of how there were numerous peripherals designed to bolt onto it so you could turn it into almost a universal arcade cabinet.

    When I was very young, my favorite gaming magazine was one called Video Games & Computer Entertainment Monthly (if I'm remembering right). It was the only magazine I could get my hands on that covered computers, consoles, AND foreign gaming stuff as well as interesting global gaming news. I definitely remember seeing something about the SuperGrafx and thinking it looked amazing. It must've been Aldynes that they showed a tiny screenshot of. The size of the sprites the console supported was a big deal, and the gigantic sprites in Aldynes for the boss enemies was stunning to me. At the time I probably had an NES, so it really blew that out of the water. I always wondered why it seemed to have fallen off the face of the planet after that.

    I feel the New 3DS as mostly a quality of life improvement to the console itself. Games like Smash Bros and Pokemon took insanely long to load and pretty much required the console to reboot itself to free enough RAM to run them. Some games do seem a bit better with the addition of the shoulder buttons and analog nub (since it was just a circle pad pro).
    In addition, it didn't cost an exorbitant amount compared to the SuperGrafx. Combined with the timing of when it came out (just in time for some of the bigger games of the console that really benefited from the improved RAM in order to entice upgrades and people that might like those games to just buy the newer version itself), it seem like a great reason for its success.
    I feel that, for a number of people, the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro are similar. Some games run REALLY poorly on the base consoles. In addition, these new upgrades helped give people a reason to buy the console to begin with.

    • @jerricabenton842

      It was a quality of life DOWNGRADE for me... I decided to grab one of those Black Friday Target New 3DS systems for $99 a few years back.
      I also had a Link between worlds Gold 3DS XL, which was a MUCH better piece of hardware. I had hit the screen lottery on the XL, with both screens being the higher quality editions (IPS vs TFT), not only that, but the audio quality is noticeably better than the 3DS XL that i have now, and it was slightly better than the audio on the New 3DS.
      I hated the fact that i couldn't just turn off the wifi with a switch on the New 3DS. I would invariably leave it on, and when i went to play all my games on my dinky little screen with my dinky little audio quality, i would usually find that the dinky little battery would need to be charged, due to having left the wifi on.
      The worst part was, I had a very large collection of eshop games on my Zelda XL, and and i transferred them over to the New 3DS because i wanted to give it a fair shot...
      well... after i gave it a fair shot, i decided I wanted to move the games back, because my original system was a better overall piece of hardware for playing the same games...
      Sadly for me, Nintendo will allow you to transfer games between an old 3ds and an old 3ds, and you can move your eshop collection to a New 3Ds FROM and old 3DS...
      but if you feel (as i did) like you need to migrate your collection back to an Old 3DS for whatever reason... well.. nintendo just doesn't have that kind of technology...
      And you can only migrate your ENTIRE collection from one console to antoher. you can't just move a single game, so if you have a large collection, you better like the model of your New 3DS before you commit!

    • @Nitroxity
      @Nitroxity 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thankfully without me knowing it I got lucky on both of my screens for my New 3DS XL, and to be honest it really helped streamline my gaming on that system. Before I had two SD cards that I used with my older 3DS model (actually got it at launch) so I'd constantly have to switch between the two as far as playing digital downloads went. I know I should've just gotten a higher capacity SD from the start, but I guess the newer model was the kick in the pants I needed. Regardless I love the huge, bright screens to death and it's a dream seeing those GBA ambassador games run as well as they do (really wanna figure out how the games were implemented through the GBA "DNA" inside the system that allowed them to not use emulation, that way I can add a shit ton of GBA games to this).
      Can't say I use any of my 3DSs for DS games anymore, though. That job's gone over to a DSi XL because I'm a junkie for large, sharp pixels. :P

      There are no games which run "REALLY" poorly on the "base" consoles. If they did, the reason wouldn't be that the base console had to little power, but that the developers messed up.

    Despite information on the Internet to the contrary, I have tested Darius Alpha on a SuperGrafx and confirmed that it is *NOT* SuperGrafx-enhanced. I even took the digital output from the first VDP and compared it to the combined output of bother VDPs and there was no difference... none... not even duplicated sprites to reduce flicker. David Shadoff says that it has routines to detect the SuperGrafx but, if so, it seemingly does nothing with them. It seems to be vestigial code from/for Darius Plus.

    One notable thing about the SGX was that all five titles offered not only solid game play, but a LOT of challenge - much more than the average PCE game; people don't seem to bring that up for some reason. I love games that "ass-kick" you, but keep you raging back at them - that's why I have a SGX!

  • @emmettturner9452
    @emmettturner9452 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The New 3DS-exclusive titles were in white boxes in North America. They were distinguished by what side of the case the platform banner was printed on. Where standard black-case DS had the banner printed vertically next to the spine on the left, DSi had it printed on the left in a white case. 3DS had a thinner white case with the platform banner printed vertically on the right (opening side) where New 3DS had a banner across the top. At a glance it wouldn't look like the other games around it so you couldn't assume it would work for the same system until you inspected it closer.
    The reason New 3DS was better-accepted had little to do with consumerism. Unlike the SuperGrafx, it actually enhanced ALL existing games. Not only did the 3D effect work better by using head-tracking, it also loaded games faster and you didn't need a Circle Pad Pro for the games that supported it. It also had built-in NFC for Amiibo/Skylanders and could play SNES Virtual Console games. The original 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS had NONE of this. Don't forget about the improved battery life, which is pretty important for a portable. Also consider that many people who bought the original may have wanted a larger screen but didn't find the 3DS XL compelling enough to upgrade where the 3DS brought more to the table to justify the upgrade.

  • @StormsparkPegasus
    @StormsparkPegasus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So it's the New 3DS of the PC Engine. Aside from being able to emulate SNES games, the New 3DS had a very small number of games that supported it, and none that required it that I've seen. I think I own one game, that runs at 60fps on the New 3DS whereas the original 3DS only runs it at 30. The only must-have part of the New 3DS is the eye tracking 3D, which makes it actually useable.

    i think it would hve been more successful if they stopped producing pc engine units at the time and pushes dor more titles to be made foe it and not the old pc engine but kept the backwards compatibility.
    it suffered the fate of the 32X, if that was a new console (like the proposed Neptune) and not an add-on as long as sega had stopped the production of the megadrive and pushed the Neptune. the backwards comparability would have encouraged new buyers to buy it and sell on the older mega drives but keep ther game library !

    • @atomicskull6405
      @atomicskull6405 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not so much "backwards compatible" as it is just a PC engine with a second VDC. From a programming standpoint it was literally just a PC engine with a second tile layer and a second sprite layer. The PC, Engine split the graphics hardware across two chips, the VDC generated the tile layer and sprite layer and the VCE handled color pallets and video output, the VDC sent the raw pixels over to the VCE. So they just designed a new VCE that could take pixels from two VDCs. Like the Pc Engine there were 16 pallets with 16 colors each for background tiles and 16 pallets with 15 colors each for sprites (technically 16 colors but one color was always transparent). Compare this to the Genesis which had four 16 color pallets shared between background tiles and sprites (the Genesis VDP could support more pallets with an external color encoder and a larger pallet with external color RAM but those pins on the VDP were left unconnected in the Genesis though the System C2 arcade board actually did use the option for an external color RAM)

    I must say that for those into the hacking scene, the New 3DS was great. It runs emulators and other software significantly better than the original version due to the upgraded hardware. This may be where at least some of the love for the new model stems from even though there weren't many exclusive releases for it. I know that this is the case for me personally for sure.

  • @KuraIthys
    @KuraIthys 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's an interesting upgrade, and certainly makes the platform more directly competitive with the mainstream 16 bit systems...
    But you look at it, and you do end up thinking... Why?
    Plus the CPU is identical to the other versions, yet two graphics chips would in principle increase the workload by some margin.
    Also, you're still hamstrung by that 8 bit CPU and all the complications that brings for a system that has to deal with considerably more than 64 kilobytes of memory (Ram and ROM combined.)
    I suppose there may have been an availability issue, or the cost of their customisations would have been prohibitive, but it feels like if they'd have been able to get a 65816 in there (running at the same speed), this would've been a real powerhouse, and made the Mega Drive and SNES seem a lot less impressive. (65816 running at 7.16 mhz would've been quite powerful compared to a 68000 at the same speed, if Steve Wozniak is to be believed. Indeed the Apple IIGS has it's 65816 gimped to run at 2.68 mhz even though faster versions were definitely available primarily to avoid making the macintosh look bad.)
    But, I suppose that may have been too complicated.
    Plus, even if they had done that, there's still every chance sales would have been just as bad, making it a moot point what upgrades are available.
    Backwards compatibility is a mixed blessing sometimes, in getting a platform established.

    Read about the SuperGrafx in a magazine at around the time it was fixing to get released. I actually desperately wanted one because it was painfully obvious that the port of Ghouls 'n Ghosts was practically arcade perfect -- a phenomenon basically unheard of outside special cases like Super Mario Bros. But the thing would have cost as much to acquire as a NeoGeo would later cost, ditto for the game, and after all I was just some kid. Plus, it really was no secret, even at the time, that the SuperGrafx would never be a success or get a lot of games released on it.

    I cannot fully get your conclusion. Isn't that new 3DS different to the Supergrafx, in that it delivers advantages even with older games, like the eyetracking and slider improvements? And could you maybe make a video elaborating the exact differences of games like Ghouls'n' Ghosts or Darius Plus on both platfomrs? :) Of course I could play the acrade version in MAME - but playing on an original hardware (including CRT) feels way different I think. I cannot stand the old games in TFT and with the wrong input device at all, honestly, that's not fun.

    The Xbox One X is more than a slight improvement over the One, though that says more about how underpowered it was at launch than anything else.
    I do think it's foreshadowing of what's to come with the next gen (both Xbox and PS) - it's going to be more like a phone generation than a console generation.

    PS4 Pro and especially the Xbox One X offer improved graphics, higher resolution and higher or more stable frame rates. Splitting the market by offering exclusive titles wouldn't go down too well. Just ask Sega. Furthermore they were marketed as a mid-gen refresh rather than an all new generation console already.
    Compare say Red Dead Redemption and Gears 5 on the Xbox One to the X to see the difference the extra power makes.

    I think there may be a pretty good number of eshop indie games that will only work on the "New 3DS." The reason for this is that the Unity Game engine is only officially supported for the New 3DS, and Nintendo actually gives a free Pro License to All developers who wish to try their hand at developing for the New.
    Technically speaking, you can create a title for the "Old 3DS" with Unity, as well, but Nintendo does not support or encourage this practice. An Old 3DS Unity title would have to be something super simple and would require heavy optimization because of the overhead that comes with running an engine like Unity.
    Having said that, i actually have no idea what the official list of New 3DS indie eshop games includes (probably a couple of dumptruck loads of Android/iPhone ports). Maybe you could look into it and do an expose on indie New 3DS "hidden gems" on your quality program!

    I partially disagree with your assessment of why the New 3DS was successful whereas the SuperGrafx failed. While there definitely is much more of an "upgrade culture" these days, popularised largely by the model of smartphones, I think that only a small part of it and overlooking the bigger picture. The big difference with the new 3DS compared to the SuperGrafx is that while it only has 4 exclusive games, a lot of regular 3DS games supported the hardware to run games better than they could on base models, whereas the SuperGrafx had only a single game that did this. I think most people bought a New 3DS for this purpose, and possibly the control nub think rather than for exclusive games. In fact I seem to remember the reaction to the idea that the new 3DS would get its own exclusives to be largely negative at the time.
    While it did have a tiny handful of exclusives, the concept of the new 3DS was much more in line with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X than it was the SuperGrafx.

    I wish I could get ANY reasonably priced PC Engine console, but the harder to find games are insanely expensive as well. I'll settle for my Japanese Saturn and a bypass cart to run downloaded games.:/
    One thing that annoys me as a Yank though, is how the PC Engine had a extra pound of plastic added to the case because they thought "Ohhhh, those Americans are too stoopid to appreciate a small console, they won't buy it unless it has more plastic on it than a riced out Honda Civic." (yeah, they did that with the NES and SNES as well, no, I don't think there's a risk of kids putting their soft drinks on top of the console). At least Sega didn't belittle us as much with the Megadrive/Genesis and Saturn (which thankfully they stuck with one name to avoid confusion).

    TopHat... I'm disappointed in you man. Stating that the XBOX ONE X has only "small resolution upgrades" over the base system is ludicrous! The GPU in the X1X puts out 6TF compared to the OG System at 1.33! The same game running on the X1X will have at-least a 4x increase in resolution if not 5x!!! Thats 400-500% increase (1920x1080 on the OG will run at 3840x2160 on the X! and there are even examples of games that ran at 1600x900 on the Original Console that run at full 3840x2160 on the 6TF X1X). Not to mention the increase in texture resolution and other graphical upgrades (The X1X has 12GB of unified GDDR5@6800MHz compared to 8GB of GDDR3@2400MHz on the OG console) that the X1X version of the same games has... It's just surprising that someone who seems to know gaming would make such a mistake... But then again you seem to be more enamored with the Generations gone by then the current crop of systems. So my rant is over but I would also like to add that the PS4 Pro while not having the same power as the X1X also has decent gains compared the the OG PS4. The reason that they aren't quite as impressive as on the X is mainly dude to the fact that the system that it is an upgrade for was already pretty powerful (40% more GPU resources then the OG XBOX ONE but a slightly slower CPU with much faster Unified RAM) and add to that the GPU being 4.2TF compared to 6.01TF on the X1X (43% faster for the X... You can bet that that isn't a coincidence!...LOL!) Anyway have a nice day.

    And 4K is quite a big deal to many ppl. It's a lot more than just a "slight" resolution upgrade. Admittedly tho it won't be til the next console generation where we will truly see 4K being used to it's fullest, as these "Pro" versions of our current consoles are barely powerful enough to pull off 4K.

    • @cube2fox
      @cube2fox 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are even smartphones which support 4k, so this has almost nothing to do with the "power" of the console. The thing is, if you increase the resolution, you have to make sacrifices elsewhere. Same with FPS or polygons or whatnot. A game which runs on a higher resolution will never be able to have as much polygons/fps etc as a game with lower resolution at the same hardware. This is true just as much for a console today as for a console released in then years.

    • @skins4thewin
      @skins4thewin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cube2fox It has everything to do with the power of the console. What else would it have to do with? Mobile processors have come a LONG way in recent years. The tiny processor in the Switch is in fact at least as powerful as the PS3 as far as pure calculations go. So saying that Smartphones can do 4K isn't really saying much of anything. Yes, I understand that raising the resolution means other things must be sacrificed.
      Even so, the PS4 Pro can barely pull off modern 4K in the terms of the latest games. It takes some serious processing power to achieve 4K. I still say that the next gen is when we will see some truly impressive 4K gaming on the console market.

    • @cube2fox
      @cube2fox 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skins4thewin You don't understand! The power is irrelevant (the video chip just must be capable of providing a 4k signal), just as the power of a console is irrelevant for it's FPS. Even old NES games had 60 FPS, while many PS4 games have still just 30. The thing is, I repeat, if you increase the resolution, you can display less polygons (or less FPS etc) on the same hardware - period!

    • @skins4thewin
      @skins4thewin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cube2fox - Lol ok guy, whatever you say. I think there's a little more to it than that. • @cube2fox
      @cube2fox 5 ปีที่แล้ว
