- A Toronto landlord says his tenant was renting out his condo, taking deposit money from several people and then taking off. Pat Taney reports.

“Police won’t do anything” yet the video actually showed us that they are investigating these cases when they mentioned a woman was arrested for similar scam but go on.
A rare find, a good landlord who is a gentleman ! These are the landlords who need to be praised and protected cause the slumlords of ontario are too many just as bad as the terror reigning tenants

The news talked to the criminal but the police didn’t care to find him. The owner ended up having the grace to help fellow victims, not the gov. This is a place for fraud to flourish.

Yeah, but watch out for the guys who rent a small 1 bedroom with a 1 person lease, then move their parents in and ruin the place with Indian cooking odours and mould.

Fines if you don’t rent your place but then you have to worry about fraud tenants. I don’t care what the fines say, they will never be enough to justify headaches like these.

That is a risk. I had this with my rental one time. I rented it to one person and she subletted it to six for more than the rent she gave me.

The LTB was thinned out when it needed to become beefy. A beefy LTB would enforce laws that ultimately protect both tenants and landlords but a thinned out one protects criminals who rely on lack of enforcement.

thorough and rigorous vetting of potential tenants so critical, especially in times like these. Helps to reduce the risk for landlords. Regardless of how good the paperwork / application may be.

In Texas you can evict a trespasser at gunpoint(castle doctrine law) as long as you are the legal homeowner why are Canadian property laws punish the homeowners?
Weak laws, weak enforcement, even weaker punishments (even with a judgement in your favor you wont see 1 cent and the scumbag wont be held to account). This happens because it is allowed to happen. I feel bad for those who were scammed, and unfortunately, you won't get a satisfactory resolution.

Yes, you include it as an item in your lease and require it to be provided by the tenant prospect before signing- along with a credit check. In Canada, you can refuse to rent to anyone with a criminal record.
