I first played on the utterly miserable Switch version, and even then it was able to catch my attention to some extent. Now that I've played the properly complete game, it really does deserve more attention even if it's rough around the edges.
This game is simply INCREDIBLE. As an artist, I was seduced by every f*cking thing on it; Characters, backgrounds, sound effects, music, menus, and the story... Oh dear god, it's one of best games that I've ever played. I highly recommend this to all future concept artists and character designers, seriously, the concepts of this game are insane!
The song that drew me in was VS DJ Subatomic Supernova. I LOVED the style of music, and when I found out it was from a game?? I was hooked. I unfortunately only got to play the Switch version, but I absolutely love it. Mayday and Zuke quickly became favorite characters of mine, and the boss designs struck me right in my heart with their unique styles. I wish more people knew of this game. Maybe we'll get lucky and a big time youtuber or streamer will do a playthrough of it one day, exposing their fans to it.
This game is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. Oozes with character and love in every single facet; even if it's rough around the edges in parts it is simply one of the best games I've played filled with great moral lessons, great music, great writing, and PACKED to the brim with Malaysian culture. There is so much to love about this game. I pray this game gets more recognition
This game's been coming back to mind since people leapt on Hi-Fi Rush. Watching HFR I can't help but think it stopped short of what NSR managed. It didn't go as whole hog on the music themes, and in fact kept them mostly separate from the story save for the justification for it in gameplay and the cat. But it would have benefitted from having been more closely tied to the music aspects.
I really enjoy this video and this game has been one of my favorites to replay. I think my favorite little bit of the game is holding down the transformation button during a boss battle to hear mayday or zuke play along with the bosses theme!
It’s awesome how they got some of the the music artists from the spark the electric jester games and sonic before and after the sequel to make this soundtrack and as usual they did a great job making this soundtrack for this game
I played the Switch version on release, and loved it. The music rocks, and if the developers make a sequel, I’m all for it. You failed to mention that for most the tracks in the game, when you hold down the “activation button” for Mayday and Zuke, they actively play a guitar or drum solo that goes with the background. There’s a TH-cam channel called Drunken Luna I believe that has compilations of these ost + solo tracks. Seeing all the add-ons for the Encore Edition, I’m tempted to buy that version to experience more of it. Though may when the price isn’t at $40.
there was a time where yt would recommend me the videos with every boss fight. at some point I was like "ok ok I'll watch it" and I have to say that it was great. I straight up bought after watching the first 2 bosses and loved every second of the game. it kills me that not many people know about it and wont give it a chance at first glance but i hope more people realise what a great game they've been missing out on all this time.
NSR! I ended up playing it because I heard a remix of Yinu's themes and I loved all the music so much I gave it a shot on PC! I ended up having a pretty buggy version, but I loved it enough to get Encore Edition, where a piece of my art is actually in the game!
This was a really nice review! I wish the game got more of the recognition that it deserves, especially since I want more people to talk about the game with :,)
Every upload is always a pleasant surprise, yet somehow you find a way to make each one better than the last! The writing, pacing and delivery was put together extremely well to create a really enjoyable watch. I can't wait to see the next one! Dynamic Music 2 when? :^)
I remember playing this game back on my switch back in 2021 and was hooked, it even made me feel sort of nostalgic in some parts, a lot of the general vibe and atmosphere felt like it was inspired by certain anime and movies like Rio and Madagascar. Especially with the DK West rap battles. The soundtrack and the rep for Malay culture is beautiful too, I’m surprised it’s not as popular as other games I’ve seen.
Played the switch version and honestly even though it was, a piece of work to beat. Easily one of the most memorable games I’ve played, not for the gameplay but the love and passion that spewed from characters like Mayday, Zuke, and especially Eve (I am a “little” bias to her specifically lol). Eve is easily why I love the game, she’s quite honestly the only character in any media I’ve connected with on a very personal level. Which it shows why as she’s such a unique character who’s not just “The Ex” but an absolute diva with such a unique view on the world and her experiences like how she recalls the moment she set Zuke’s hair on fire. Which I love how they handle her history with Zuke and the treatment she put him through. It wasn’t played off like a gag like with Panini from Chowder (a night and day comparison I know, but a well known one), or brushed aside and suddenly she’s forgiven like she earned it after trying to kick Zuke’s and Mayday’s asses. (Not missing the opportunity to use Yukako from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures as an example) It did so much for her character along with the main duo as well. And this doesn’t even branch into the other bosses, their stories, and the beauty in them. I feel like anyone that’s played it has at least one character they care deeply on, for better or worse.
man i thought i hated this game because dude that switch version is absolutely ass but only because it was my only option and it was an epic shit store exclusive at the time. that steam version made me actually love that game properly and i honestly wish we lived in a timeline where the game was delayed just a year later if encore edition was the definitive we could've gotten across all platforms, a bit insult to injury knowing how at launch it was $40 but it's lowered to $25. either way i'm just glad people like you made videos about nsr because it's still slipping under people's radar and it deserves more talk.
Great video man, it's always a joy to watch your analysis. And you keep improving with each video you release. Looking forward into seeing what else you upload next.
Thanks for the review. I'd like to recommend you the game called Aquaria. It may not have the similar mechanics and gameplay, but the whole ingame world is powered by music. Alec Holowka, the creator, did a collosal job not only just with the story and programming, but also he himself composed every soundtrack there, that adds a personality to locations, battles and the story. Your main weapon there - music. By playing notes on the note circle around the protgonist you'll be able to sing songs, that can give you extra power by letting you perform magic or even changing your form. Although, gotta add a few words about the story: it's a very dark tale, but you'll enjoy it anyway. Cheers!
I hope there is to be a sequel or a similar game that is inspired by NSR and music overall. I was very critical about this game and had a problem with it feeling like the protagonists of this game were mostly all about interrupting the already established rhythm of the music, characters and game design. One of my favorite genres and types of music is expiremental and plunderphonics. Examples of this are mashups and heavy sampling from artists like Daft Punk, Ye, The Avalanches and etc. I really hope there is a game that focuses more on not just countering the already established cool and upbeat product, but actually not only synchronizing but also making something new and completely different, not just destroying but creating a groovy and timeless new beat and rhythm out of it! A perfect example of this is the album "Since I Left You" from The Avalanches, making something new, fresh, yet timeless out of already well but either forgotten or old existing music.
I wanted to enjoy it, but my friend and I played on the switch version, we couldn't get through sayu due to rampant bugs. Eventually we just had one play solo so we could at least see more of it because the art alone was beautiful and cheeky with all the hidden details but we eventually hit an unpassable brickwall with the road to 1010. I wish they didn't half-bake the port of a port of a port of a port just to sell more copies. I know I would've loved the game if it felt like the dev team gave all of the versions as much love too. Might try it on a different version at some point but the bugs really left a sour taste in my mouth, it's like rwby, it hurt more because I could see the potential
I believe TH-cam recommended me this due to the Hi-Fi Rush videos that I've been seeing... I did have interest in this game but then it sort of fell off my radar after a bit. I might pick it up because of some of the price decreases and of course I ended up liking Hi-Fi Rush quite a bit! I think you should try out that one next. I also subbed too.
Cool review. By the way, switch version isn't finished as it was developed by other company, and due to covid-19 tem were not able to finish. The apologized for this situation
Also the lyrics that everyone made on them are just cool but honestly I feel it's better to listen to the regular OG also like 10:10 is my favorite boss I've never played the game but the tent ends are just hilarious because they're generic heart attractive pop idol
same, first instance, not impressive, but seems like sayu was the reason to play it for a lot of users, this game has a great main story, and the fact that you can enjoy some backstory as zuke & eve's past is cool, amazing video pal.
sorry, don't mean to be the "BLEH PERSONA 5 ISN'T THE ONLY GAME" kinda guy but the hub word theme doesn't take inspiration from P5, it uses the same kind of synth that alot of the tracks from P5 do. alot of different songs use that same instrument and it usually ends up getting compared to P5
NSR is basically politics if it's based on their taste in music, I have a different taste and music and my little step-sister thinks most of the stuff I listen to isn't listen to and is considered a certain offensive slur to her

I love this game. Sadly the switch version was really, really bad... Especially the two-player mode! We couldnt progress past sayu for about a week because there was a gamebreaking bug during her fight.
I hate that music this amazing is squandered by a game with a couple of high peaks, but mostly low valleys. Hope they take note of how the game falls flat in most areas of actual gameplay, so that their next game can be da bomb we know it can be. Just as DJ Subatomic Supernova, we should not settle for mediocrity from someone we know can do better.
I had quite a bit of fun playing the game but the ending was really REALLY bad. It was a shame that the game that I thought was pretty good over all and actually made me laugh a few times would leave me with such a bad taste in my mouth due to the horrible writing at the very end.
You have a point, perhaps at this stage it seems to have somewhat of a cult following, especially considering the video is doing well in terms of my average viewership. Hope you enjoyed the video though :)

I too bought the Switch version out of love for the game, and agree it isn't a great way to play. Thanks for checking out the video
Honestly wish the switch version was better but I sure they did all they could
So it was a porting issue? I played through it and yeah- Holy crud, it was badly coded/ported
Omg YESS , fr tho the dk west fights are still sososo hard even w the patched in health items
I only bought it on the switch to play it Mobile on the road

I hate how this game is so underrated while Hi-Fi Rush just blown in popularity. So not fair...

The art style reminds me of the "de Blob" games, maybe they can give you a similar experience.
