I heard a good piece of advice is to record the skype interview/ phonecall and ask as many questions about the job so that when you get there and they start backtracking and trying to "save face" and bullshit you, you pull out the recording and that shuts them up lol

The cynic in me is saying nope to this because in my teaching life I had multiple contract disputes at different schools with the written, signed contract in hand and they literally just look at it and say, "Well that's what it says but that's not what it MEANS." 🥴🙃🙄 Honoring verbal and written contracts was not really a thing at most workplaces in my experience in Korea.

Hi, this is so indicative of the problems inherent in the USA right now. Problem #1 - There are tons of "opportunity deserts" in the USA in which there just aren't jobs available. Problem #2 - the available jobs do not pay enough to live off of. Not sure why people in the seats of power here allowed a situation where you just can't make enough to live from working a regular job that anyone can apply for, but this situation has gone on for decades, and it's gotten to the point where people are just jumping ship and avoiding the hot mess that is living in the USA. Problem #3 - they saddle you with debt just to get an education, unlike other countries where young people exit school with their degree and no debt. What are they thinking, when there is such lack of opportunity here?? Problem #4 - abusive men in the USA. The "toxic relationship" she describes here is unfortunately common, with men often group participating in abusive websites and making each other worse, mistreating and harming women in relationships. How long is it going to be until women just simply dump the entire system that treated them this way and go for men who are from other cultures? Problem #5 - housing. Her sister was moving in with a boyfriend, putting her into a position where she would either need to find a roommate or afford an entire apartment by herself on salaries that were not paying well. Roommates are really dangerous for women, and in the USA, relationships are dangerous for women as well. So this teaching job in Korea was a solution to these problems. Women have to be on guard 24/7 to avoid the terrible pitfalls of even being here. Rachel, I'm so glad you ended up with a wonderful partner, apartment, job and life!

Wishing you all the luck and subscribing so that you can have more viewers. Keep up enjoying Korea, as this video is pretty good about what you experienced. Hopefully, you can prepare the next generations of brave souls teaching abroad. In many ways, you have the pioneer spirit that built many a nation. Few people go out of their comfort zone to brave new worlds and take on challenges and stick it out. You are stronger than most, so know that you have another fan rooting for you from Hawaii.. Stay safe.

Haha, your experience was a lot like mine. The love motel. Also, I got off the plane and they took me directly to the hagwon to start observing classes. But, that school was great. They paid a lot and always on time. Being in Korea initially was a really exciting time. Such an adventure. Recruiters are scum. They will always lie. You're young and pretty. Basically the key to Seoul. I remember I had to teach adults at 7:30am. This sweet old lady kept bringing me dog soup. (It went in the toilet every time)

Way too influential tbh. Unfortunately, many schools hire teachers based on “what the mommies would like” aka white Americans that *look* how they imagine their baby angel’s English teacher to look instead of who would be the best teacher. POC and Asian Americans specifically have a harder time finding teaching jobs, no matter what their qualifications are. Sad truth that needs to change
