That 1982 Thomas Cup final at the Royal Albert Hall in London featuring Indonesia's Liem Swie King and China's Han Jian was a thriller and it went into the wire.
It was the second night of play in the format of best of nine ties which was the last time it was to be decided in the 1982 Thomas Cup finals.
China featuring in their maiden Thomas Cup had whipped Denmark 8-1 in the semi finals whereas Indonesia the Cup holders for the past four series had trounced England by a similar margin.
Indonesia had led 3-1 in the first night of play but they did not expect a sudden fightback by the Chinese.
Indonesia who had banked on Liem Swie King and the doubles pair of Eddy Kartono and Rudy Heryanto to deliver the winning points were in for a shock as Luis Ponggoh fell to Chen Chang Jie.Then three times All England champion was edged out in a three set thriller by Han Jian and the legendary thirty three year old Rudy Hartono in his sixth and final Thomas Cup appearance was outlasted by Luan Jin.
China on the second day had overturned a 3-1 deficit to lead 4-3 and needed just a point to clinch victory and the Cup.
Nobody had expected the 1981 All England champions Rudy Heryanto and Eddy Kartono to easily succumed to Yao Xi Ming and Sun Zhian especially in the rubber set.
Kartono and Heryanto may well have won as they led 14-12 in the first set but allowed the Chinese pair to force deuce and won it at 17-14.Despite a quick recovery in the second set they were crushed 15-1 in the decider.Kartono and Heryanto made many silly and enforced errors in the rubber to allow Yao and Sun to roam home and win.
For Indonesia that 1982 Thomas Cup final defeat to China in London must have been a bitter pill to swallow as two years before that China had beaten Indonesia in the "Super Clash" held in Singapore by 5-4.
That defeat marked the end of Indonesia's domination of the Thomas Cup they had held since dethroning Malaysia in the 1970 Thomas Cup finals in Kuala Lumpur.From1970 to 1979 in the previous four Thomas Cup final against Malaysia(in 1970 and 1976)and against Denmark(in 1973 and l979)the finals were won with thumping margins especially in 1976 and 1979 with 9-0 margins.
Indonesia's 5-4 defeat to China in the 1982final meant that for the first time since losing 6-3 to Malaysia in the 1967 final that Indonesia had tasted defeat in along unbeaten sequence. For Rudy Hartono it was his second Thomas Cup match defeat to Luan Jin.His first was to the late Svend Pri in the 1973 final.

The only difference between then and now is the colorful apparel players wear nowadays:) But in terms of playing skills, they were really as amazing as many of the current players are.

Very slow pace in the past. Yang Yang is the one who brought in the quickness, agility for badminton in the mid 80s.

Wow this is my first time seeing Han Jian's match ... surprised at how strong his attacks and defences are ... and very fit and buff guy ... really he's a couple of notches above the previous "greats" such as Rudy Hartono .. what a legend ..

I remember - It was perhaps in 1980 or 1981 when our Legendary player Prakash Padukone came back from 0-14 down to beat Han Jian 17-14. What a performance really.

Kul Bhushan Jain but I think you got it wrong. It was in the 1981 inaugural Alba World Cup final at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur.
Believe it or not in that final between Han Jian and Prakash Padukone, the former was given a duck in the first set losing 15-0.Only then in the second set Han Jian gave a good account of himself before bowing out at deuce 17-16.I remember Prakash irritated Han Jian by his constant wiping of his eyebrows with his hands. It was more of a psychological ploy to disrupt and upset Han Jian's concentration.

It was China's maiden appearance in the Thomas Cup.For the first time in the Thomas Cup Indonesia who had a stranglehold on the Thomas Cup since 1970 had met their match in China.
For so long China's admittance into the IBF had been thwarted just because of Taiwan.
But even before their historic clash at the London 1982 Thomas Cup final China had thrice beaten Indonesia.
It was in the 1974 Asian Games at Teheran Iran that China then being admitted to the Asian Badminton Confederation(ABC)won the men's team gold by edging Indonesia 3-2 in the final.
Then five years later in December 1979,China also beat Indonesia 6-3 in a friendly encounter in Hong Kong although Indonesian officials may claim that China's victory was a hollow one as Indonesia were without three of their top stars including Liem Swie King for taking banned substance.
But it was two years ago in the "Super Clash" in Singapore in February 1980 that both Indonesia and China were actually at full strength fielding their strongest possible line ups.
That "Super Clash" was being telecasted live by TVRI and millions of Indonesian badminton fans watched the clash for two nights with the score tied at 2-2 after the first night of play.
It was during the second night that badminton was at its scintillating best with Han Jian and Swie King fought for every point and the deciding set could have gone either way.But a costly error by Swie King enabled Han Jian to win 18-17.It was the turning point as China won 5-4 in the end although Indonesia may claim that they had won the "Super Clash" with a 7-6 aggregate and rightly so.
The set was stage for their shown down the next two years in the Thomas Cup final at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 20/21 May 1982.
In July 1981 China had officially being admitted to the IBF and the following year they made their maiden appearance in the Thomas Cup.The same year China took the All England Badminton Championships by storm with their women making waves ncluding the first round exit of South Korea's Sun Ai Hwang who was beaten by the unheralded Zheng Yu Li.
As expected China and Indonesia clashed in the Thomas Cup final. The 1982 Thomas Cup final would be the last to be contested in two nights in the best of nine ties.
For Indonesia they would be seeking their fifth Thomas Cup success having successfully retained the Thomas Cup thrice in 1973,1976 and 1979.The last two Thomas Cup were won by Indonesia with a mammoth 9-0 scores win over Malaysia and Denmark at Bangkok in 1976 and at Jakarta in 1979.
Surely Indonesia started as favourites to retain the Thomas Cup for the fourth time at London. And to strengthen the Indonesian team Ferry Sonneville had coerced the legendary Rudy Hartono out of retirement to play third singles as he did in 1979.
But in 1982 Hartono had reached the nadir of his badminton career. His form and fitness had been suspect but then Indonesia needed Hartono in the defense of the Thomas Cup.
Yes it was a great final at the Royal Albert Hall over the two nights with Indonesia taking a 3-1 lead after the first night of play.
Swie King had scored easily over Chen Chang Jie but the following night he met his match in Han Jian who had edged him in the 1980 "Super Clash" by just a point at 18-17.
Again in the Thomas Cup final both fought to the last with Han Jian again winning prevailing by 17-14 in the rubber set.

What was the point? All those who represented Indonesia were Chinese too. Many of the coaches in the early years of Chinese badminton era were Indonesian Chinese.

Selmer Reference54 yes you are right and I do concur with you. Those coaches who had coached China to victory in the Thomas Cup from 1982,1986,1988 and 1990 were actually born in Indonesia like Hou Chia Chang,Thang Hsien Hu(The Thing),Chen Fou Chou and Fang Kai Siang.
Thang Hsien Hu in fact was once an Indonesian national player but he together with Hou Chia Chang migrated to China in the early 1960s.

Rudy Hartono's All England titles are meaningless. He never face a single Chinese opponent in every All England tournament just because the Chinese are not allowed to participate.
Now he faced the first Chinese player and he lost that game. Should the Chinese players be allowed to participate in the All England, Rudy Hartono will never be able to win Eight All England titles.
