I would feel honored to meet Joel, if possible. My family perished in Auschwitz. I love that Joel survived , because I am French.. that is why my family was sent to Auschwitz. Merci beaucoup for sharing your story!

Bill and Joel! Todah rabah for elucidating your history. I live in Texas. There is much antisemitism here. I cannot image what you went through!! So very wonderful to hear your history!

I’m so sad about his dad. Naïvely. I was hoping for a happy ending, but I should know better. This was a hellish time for so many. Almost no Jewish families walked away unscathed. I am so pleased that I got to hear an account of someone who was a French Jew. So many times these narratives are about people from Eastern Europe or central Europe. I am blessed to have learned a little about how things were for French Jews .

Never forget. These accounts are so critical in the world where fascism and hate are still in fashion. We must never forget that we are all capable of horrible atrocities when we hate and otherize people. All human beings deserve respect, and all human beings have value.

How did Joël, his mother and two brothers escape being deported if they were living openly as Jews?

True story (would make a great tv pilot). I was selling my house. During renovation, I had to rent a room from my religious-fanatic ex (divorced 20 years earlier), and his latest wife (half my age). She and I would have these little discussions where she’d try to palm him off on me. I’d explain that there’s nothing between us. With age, he’d become a defensive yeller/screamer, who pretty much didn’t work. As it turned out, both she and I Ieft to new homes at the same time. He immediately moved in some lowlifes. I couldn’t see them helping with the $1,500. rent. They left, he brought in another batch (now gone). NC from me 2 years. Wife (visiting) sent me a video of him being arrested for kidnapping their son (11) for 3 months. He’s now turning 59, sleeping on a hard wooden floor.

What in the world does this have to do with the amazing story that we just heard? Isn’t the focus the holocaust? Don’t you think that this man and his family deserve your attention and that of the many people who have watched this account? It’s a serious situation. Your story doesn’t shed light on the holocaust. It has nothing to do with the subject matter. Are you this desperate for attention?
