Another option although the dither isn't a bad idea, is to lose the dither but still use the egg crate with a few small areas cut out just big enough for her to get thru but not him. She most likely won't lay on her side if she has the option to lay on his. 3rd possibility is aggression becomes too serious between them is to put the flat saucer under the egg crate so its on both sides & keeping them completely separate for her safety. They may still spawn even divided.
