Portable Fountain Pen Review - How I Improved My Traveler's Company Brass Pen

- I didn't love the Traveler's Company Brass Fountain Pen when I first got it, but here's how changing the nib to a Schmidt FH241 medium replacement nib improved the experience for me! My full fountain pen review, two writing tests, and patina updates at 3 weeks and 6 months plus a size comparison with the Kaweco AL Sport and Kaweco Liliput.

I love the brass, there’s so much you can do with it. Let it get super dark and remain lighter in the high touch areas, keep it mirror polished with ease (any polishing rag will work), give it a Matte gold finish by setting it in ketchup for 30 minutes, you could use ammonia to force patina it and it will turn blue and turquoise….oof, so much you could do to make it your own lol.

It really is! Such a relief that it worked out the way I'd hoped, too -- I was really excited about this pen when I first got it. In the future, I'd love to learn more about how to tune nibs and make more complicated adjustments to my pens that don't write as well as this one, but I'm glad that this was a super easy change! I have this pen and it is actually one of my fave fine nibs! I got into fountain pens to try and stop pressing so hard and holding my pen in a death grip. I wrote with mediums for awhile and can now do fine...just fine! I keep mine inked at all times with Diamine Earl Grey. I keep meaning to try another ink and just can't do it!
I also love that fountain pens write so smoothly without needing to press down at all - that was a huge plus for me too. I guess I still automatically press hard on the page with the finer nibs though, heh. Maybe if it worked for you, I'll eventually get there! I probably still don't press as hard with them as I do with a ballpoint or gel pen.
I haven't tried that ink before but it looks lovely.

I have long wondered about this one because I like fine nibs and narrower pens because I have smaller hands. This one seems to have mixed reviews but I'm glad to see you have made it work for you. A little concerned about the heft of it and hand fatigue. Lots of things to consider and I appreciate the through overview you have given it!
Thank you. I got a replacement nib too as I like EF. This nib writes far better. It also comes in gold plated and 18 carat for less than £6 although I stuck with the silver in keeping with the one on there. I also got the rollerball units so I could swap out the FP nib occasionally, effectively giving me two pens in one. Great advice.

Waiting for package delivery in a few days. I also love Brass when it patinas! I have the same pen and like you I find that it wtites too fine for me. I used it to write down the information for the replacement nib. I will be ordering one, thanks for the tip! I love the pen and keep it in my right front pocket. It is handy for quick notes and checklists. For longer writing sessions a fatter pen is prefered.
The lavender perfumed ink from j herbin is a pretty color of blue, and very pleasant. It’s not as powerful as you’d think. I notice it when I’m filling the pen and if I sniff a page of writing, but not that much when writing with it. I thought it would be great to write love letters with, but where you going to find somebody romantic enough to page-sniff a handwritten love letter these days?

you've convinced me about this pen. I at first didn't like the cartridge. but the fact that you can just switch the ink out with help from a syringe helps.

Thank you for this extended review. I’ve wanted this pen for a while (esp. the discontinued Factory Green version), but I tend to like an M nib myself, and have wondered if I would enjoy the F nib, especially given that Japanese nibs tend to be ground a bit finer than western nibs. It’s great to know there’s a substitute available!
Ahh I wish I hadn’t missed the factory green one! I had it in my wishlist early on but they’re sold out everywhere I’ve looked now. Hoping they’ll release another someday! It seems like all of the cool limited ones I’ve seen are ballpoint pens.

Thanks for this great review. I just bought the pen this morning and waiting for it to arrive. I did some research on the weight because my Kaweco Brass Sport is just a bit too heavy. This looks like it’ll be just as portable but with much less weight.
Ooh, exciting! I ended up going with the gold Kaweco AL Sport in the size comparison portion of this video over the Kaweco Brass Sport (probably due to the heavier weight as well as the coin-like smell folks had mentioned in reviews) but I am still a bit curious about it, especially now that I've come around on this Traveler's Co brass one.
Mine is also 6+ months old.. I liked the shiny version.. Also, I’d have liked it more if it had gold toned nib and clip..
But it’s one of the best writers among several pocket pens I’ve collected and it is in rotation currently !!
Great review. Try Jinhao fountain pens, they are GREAT value, good quality for a low price.

I haven't tried any Travellers, and do not plan, because I just recently discovered Kaweco. I have a Perkeo in the Old Chambray version, because I am fond of that specific colour combination. I wasn't sure if I'd like it because it is a beginners pen and I have used that sort of Pen for decades from other Brands and made the experience, that those "plastic" Pens, though they are comfortable to use, don't last very long. After a few years they tended to leak or break, so I was skeptical, but the colour was decisive. I do like the way it guides your grip on it, so you do not have to reflect about how to grip it, as with most of the more expensive Pens, and it is one of three daily writers from the very day it arrived. Now already for four months.
I bought with the same haul a Kaweco AL Sport and a Kaweco Brass Sport. Whilst the AL Sport is always inked up and one of my fafourites even with the broad nib (which wasn't quite what I'd preferred, but since I tend to write bigger than you, doesn't really disturb), my BrassSport still sits in its beautyful brass Box and waits its first use. That is because I don't like the thought of it getting patina as much as I did when purchasing it, because the almost golden shine of the new one is so capturing. And, second, I cannot decide what Ink to get for it.
Although being a content fountain pen user for almost 30years, which is considerably more than half my lifetime, I never came to the Idea of using more than one at a time for most of that long time, and, since that was the only colour you could get everywhere, I hardly ever used a colour different from royal blue. About half a year ago, I discovered the magic of converters, so it's possible to use any Ink I want, and that is where I started to want more than just one Pen inked up at a time, and ceased to use royal blue.
So, from then on, I continued to use my Parker in brushed steel, which I like for it's noble look despite costing
What a brilliant review! It has answered so many questions I had about this pen. Especially, since most videos I´ve seen were made by fine nib lovers and medium is always my preference. I loved the comparison with Kaweco Liliput as that is my other strong contender. After changing the nib on TRC pen, how would you say it compares with Kaweco Liliput pen experience? Thank you so much for this video! If you still haven´t tried KWZ Honey ink - I couldn´t recommend it enough. It has this beautiful scent of vanilla-honey. Absolutely beautiful colour too! I know I'm a little bit late to the party but I just wanted to mention that you may want to take a look at the Laban Expression fountain pen. It's an acrylic pocket pen that's available in a variety of colors, has a medium nib and takes standard short cartridges.

Mine is juicy for half a page until it then feels like the feed is not keeping up with providing ink to the nib after that. I also have OCD and hate the patina it builds after use but that's just me and not a fault of the pen.
I've had my brass Traveler pocket pen for just over two years now and it's my "everyday carry". It is practical and robust. One thing you failed to mention is that the clip is removable by unscrewing the end-cap. The pen can then be carried using a lanyard. I prefer the pen to have a light patina and lightly "polish" the pen by rubbing the pen body with lightly dampened toothpaste followed by s thorough rinsing. This method is less abrasive to the surface than proprietary metal polishes I too love brown ink, and always keep mine filled with Pelican Edelstein Smoky Quartz ink.

I've had my Traveler brass pocket pen for about two years now. It is my favourite pen of all, and is my "Everyday Carry". It is practical and robust. Unfortunately it has sustained a fall (fortunately when closed!) and in consequence sustained a minor dent and a few scratches..
I prefer the pen to have a light patina, and therefore "polish" it every couple of months using damp toothpaste hand rubbed quite vigorously into the surface and then thoroughly rinsed off and dried. This also removed the minor scratches and is less abrasive than using proprietary metal polishes, and gives a clean but less "mirrored" appearance.
One thing you failed to mention is that the clip is removable by unscrewing the end-cap. I carry the pen in my pocket on a lanyard (with clip attached) in a leather sleeve. I love the highly polished surface of the clip and thus this keeps it from getting scratched.
I too, love brown ink, and keep the pen permanently inked up with Pelican's Edelstein Smoky Quartz. The fine nib is frugal with the ink which dries instantly, making the pen ideal for quick scribbled notes in a pocketbook.
I thoroughly recommend this pen as a robust everyday companion.

Nice review. I like the look of this pen, but it writes too thick and is too short not capped. Do I press more with thin nib? Never noticed, but anyway I always go for EF ;-)

@@markgidman2330 Difficult to say because you never choose only the nib. But of course Japansese pens are good way to go. I prefer cheap pens so I'm happy using Delike Brass with an EF nib. Also have a few JinHao 80 pens with EF - they write thin lines and are "dry" so write on any paper - good for EDC pens . My other favoutite pen like PenBBS 323 aluminum with F nib or Stilform with Bock EF didn't wrote as thin as I expected. 323 I regrinded to architect nib and now it writes much nicer - but this is not easy task. Wing Sung 699 with EF is also a quite nice writer - thin line, smooth and good flow (I do not like that shape, but still use it because of how good it writes).
This nib writes like a Broad, from my POW :D
Yeah, it’s pretty close to that. The broad nibs I have from Kaweco and TWSBI put out thicker lines than this, but it’s definitely juicy! I love it. It’s been one of my favorites lately and I just keep refilling it.

I do write more neatly with finer nibs, but luckily I journal for my own enjoyment so comfort, writing experience, the ability to write for longer periods of time without getting cramped, and getting to see the beautiful ink better all weigh more highly for me than that does.
Disappointing there's no EF replaceable nib, i bought this for making notes in my wallet notebook & i don't have a whole lotta room in there. The TCo FP was my first pocket pen & got hooked, now i have 14+ & loving it!

You can get an extra fine nib from schmidt. I bought the gold plated one and is perfect for my passport sized diary
