  • Television and cinema advertising at the release of the iconic 1971 HQ Holden. The HQ would lock in GMH's number #1 position on the Australian sales charts, and offered a stronger body and flow-through ventilation. This is our all time favourite Holden!

The cars of the 70s will forever be the peak of automotive design, in my opinion. Holden, Ford and Chrysler Valiant all nailed it for iconic designs, packed with personality...
Love this compilation. Thank you for sharing it. 😊👍

Even as a Ford fan, The HQ Era was Awesome. I was born in 1996 But my Cousin has a later 1975 HJ all factory stock. Witch is good he was born 1998 BUT he loves keeping things stock like me.

My Dad had a mustard coloured HQ Kingswood - my main memory was how hot the seats got in summer. If you didn't put a towel down first, you would get burns on the back of your legs!

Introduced in 1971 and in production until 1973. They also introduced the Monaro GTS, which was a high-performance saloon.
6:02 features the theme from the movie Shaft, which was released in 1971.

Very interesting to note that the Belmont isn't even mentioned. Sounds like Holden didn't even want to market the Belmont

Back in the 1970's the HQ Kingswood would've been the only model of Kingswood that I would've bought.
My dad used to drive a HQ Kingswood wagon which he bought in 1980 when I was only 2 1/2 years old (about 43 years ago).
I probably would've bought a V8 one with air conditioning & power steering in the day & I liked the ergonomics of the HQ Kingswood better than the previous Kingswoods (HG,HK & HT models) as well as the models afterwards (HJ,HX & HZ).
The WB Statesman probably wasn't a bad looking car though, it has a better looking instrument cluster than the VF Commodores has & the WB Statesman was made in 1980-1984 so I don't know what Holden did to make the VF Commodores look so ugly !

One of the best parts of these ads is that boats are being towed by the advertised cars and even though the roads were often closed to make the ads, back in the day there were very few overated four wheel drives on the roads, unlike today, towing all sorts of stupid trailers and driven often by dickheads who not only think they own the roads, but have no idea how their "off road" vehicle handles in a serious emergency situation.

Why didn't GM just send the American lineup to Australia as is?

Because cars imported into Australia at the time were subjected to import tariffs.

The HQ sure looked good but it was a pretty average effort in all other respects. Remember how it used to rust out before your eyes everywhere including the doors and underneath the windscreen so when it rained, water would flood into the car. Fuel economy was non existent. The 202 3.3 litre 6 cylinder used to drink fuel like a 5.0 litre 350 V8. And it used to stall in winter because the brilliant Holden engineering team used coolant water to heat the inlet manifold which took forever to heat up instead of picking up off the exhaust with a flexible ducting tube to give heat almost instantaneously after the engine was started.
