I’ve been saying it since this game launched: Bugs aren’t Cyberpunk’s only problem.
This game is one of those “wide as an ocean, but shallow as a puddle” type games.

@@tomisabum Lol speaking directly of food. Go to Latino bar - fruit, energy drinks, candy bars. Go to sushi restaurant - fruit, energy drinks, candy bars. Fucking lazy for CDPR man. Plus they act in the trailers like you'll be able to sit down and visually eat food. Not that it's a riveting gameplay mechanic, but it adds immersion. Fucking STALKER mods had no problem adding food/drink animations. Mediocre.

@Cryer24597 Depends on how you look at it, but calling it a masterpiece is a stretch imo. Every aspect of it had been done better by some other game before, but Skyrim went the jack of all trades route and put it all into a nice and comprehensible package. The combat lacked depth, as you're mostly just hitting/shooting shit until it dies without any tactical or skill based approach. The quests were nice, but lacked the weight of player choice. Didn't really give a shit about the NPC's either, as most of them have like 3 voice lines and lack any real personality. Like, I loved it when it came out, but I hadn't played a lot of RPG games back then so I really didn't have a lot to meassure it with, but in the past years I've figured that there were a lot of other games that did everything Skyrim did, but better. It's by no means a bad game, just kind of shallow.

I hope you realize that there aren't actually any factions in the game. NPCs simply have different "affiliation" set, which doesn't do anything, there is no game logic behind it. So when you find all those 'gangs' in the city who are standing still and waiting for you to shoot at them, they're all just generic enemy NPCs with perhaps some visual differences.
Must be the most superficially and shoddily code "AAA" game of the century so far. It's such a complete insult it's hard to put into words. Especially if you know anything about programming... then it's all wide open, and the graphics can't distract you from seeing how primitive everything works under the hood. We're back to having a single float health value for vehicles, back to NPC "AI" with merely 3-4 different main states, etc. Unbelievable. CDPR hired monkeys to code this game. I wasn't even hyped about this game, but it infuriates me so badly.

One thing that pissed me off about the game was the “Corpo Story”. You start off as a Corpo, and then... get fired and become a street kid because Jackie is just a lovable bastard. I think everyone was influenced to believe all 3 paths would basically almost be 3 entirely different games, but almost every single path doesn’t matter. As a Corpo, we should rise the ranks and probably even FIGHT Jackie! Or at least work with him because he’s good at what he does! Honestly, I still love this game because it’s the closest thing to a dream Cyberpunk game for myself, but damn they could’ve really blown the shit out of my mind. The biggest problem is definitely Johnny Silverhand and his involvement with the story though. In cyberpunk I’d like to be V. Not Johnny. I didn’t create my character and develop a story and skillset for them just to be Johnny.

    • @Xul
      @Xul 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

@UFHoee Yeah, I wanted to subvert Corpo by not playing their game but in the first minutes you can't even continue in the first dialoge without "pressing E to sit down" and you go on to fly around in a boring taxi that has less freedom and details than a virtua cop game ...
when the game finally seemed to actually go forward with the Jacky diologue it decided to go to the "fuck it I'm not a corpo" routine by itself ... in a cutscene ... I was so pissed that I immediately quit ...
I later continued but the first gun fights where so bad and clunky that it didn't take long to quit again ... I still haven't managed to endure more than 30 minutes at once in this game ... it is mediocre 90's gaming for dummies - I rather go back to play some Half Life (2) or GTA instead of pretending that this is okay.

The problem is V gets the chip as a fucken nobody that would've been killed within minutes after the dexx drama by the corps if not for plot convenient. As it is the main story was too short seeing as you can still get new side quests a dozen hours after completing the main story.
If V had a true third act the game wouldn't have been so bad and some of the side characters could of had more effort/reason to help or kill V. The wished to work on it longer and you think you would want to release your game in this state after 7 years of work? It has so many elements so many finished games cant even do its not even funny, not to mention it cares 100 times more about detail and the story actually makes you care about your character for once which was hugely missing any just about all games related to this like bethesda games and mass effect and all those in my opinion dont hold a candle to this. You ask for better cops and not ones who just show up, well if you werent paying attention at the start the cops are not meant to be weak and are not meant to be fought, if that was the case mr realism im sure this cyberpunk world would be a lot crazier. Also its the first open world to show off different lives in a city so well and you actually feel the difference between battles in the city to battles in the dunes, the slums to the inside of many different building layouts to challenges. Not to mention the story line is amazing and actually made me care about whats going on with my character.

Punched the guy and started chasing him. He continually punched the guy in the back maybe 6 times. It was like the guy wasn't getting punched at all, just kept running. Then he ultimately pulled out some blunt weapon and finally caused an animation to take place where the guy fell to the ground. Then he was chased by the cops. They popped out of nowhere at him. He ran for a bit and went to hide up a staircase behind a building. I watched on the mini-map as the cop terminatored right towards him and was shooting at him through the wall (no damage) until the cop finally got into view to actually do damage. He had to keep running at this point and finally lost his star rating.

"The fans bitched and whined about the game being delayed, so they forced CDPR to release it before it was ready!"
No, CDPR was under no obligation to release the game early because people were getting vocal. Chances are, they released it when they did to capitalize on Christmas sales.
"The fans overhyped the game to ludicrously high expectations!"
No, CDPR's marketing overhyped the game. They made promises that they failed to deliver on, probably because the game's design doc was not set in stone, or because they miscalculated the game's scale & budget (both of which are very common in the industry).
"The haters are distracting you with the bugs - the game is perfect if you look past them!"
No, the game's content is half-baked. Instead of crafting/finding tiered weapons and modifying them to suit our builds, we have a looter-shooter system where you're constantly throwing away your current weapons for new ones because they have slightly higher numbers. Instead of an expanding tree of new abilities, we have "+10% whatever".
And as a shooter, you have to deal with damage sponge enemies and nonsensical sightlines (that kill stealth).

I'm perplexed that there is no option to change the character's looks considering the entire world is so focused on body modification. For that matter, why can't I pay more and buy an "improved" implant that (for instance) combines the power and smart weapon controlling attributes into one piece? Or the ankles and tendons together (for more eddies) to combine the two types of jumps? That would make sense given the world. ETA Good thoughts on Keanu's appearance in the game. I hadn't thought of that, but they paid him big bucks, so naturally they wanted to utilize him as much as possible, and so rewrote the story. That explains so much.

  • @kazohinia5751
    @kazohinia5751 4 ปีที่แล้ว +78

Elements of the old story before the rewrite are arguably still present on release. A large part of the early story focuses on V's goal to become successful in Night City, and the game even indicates some level of choice in how V is going to get to the top. There's a pseudo choice in regard to Dex (whether or not V is going to cut him out of the deal) that seems like a branching point for the character (selfish/trustworthy). Instead, Dex betrays V immediately and the linear story with Johnny as the de facto protagonist begins from there.
The story was a really big missed opporunity for exploring the world they created, why aren't there joinable factions? Why is V always a mercenary regardless of lifepath and not a corporate agent, gang member, or nomad? Why doesn't the game allow you to play after the ending even though your actions didn't really transform the game world? It all boils down to the fact that they wrote the wrong story for the wrong game.

    • @Yarblocosifilitico
      @Yarblocosifilitico 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Agreed. The story was good but not a perfect fit for the setting. A simple 'rise to the top' story would've been great if there was a faction system to interact with. Plus, something that bothers me personally is this obesssion for making cutscenes where your character is weak. It's becoming more and more standard but I don't see the appeal; you just move slowly for a while and hear your char complain (regardless of the personality you're trying to roleplay, so forget about roleplaying a stoic character).
The lifepaths are completely irrelevant, sadly. I finished nomad recently and started a corpo one. Felt like the same. In the nomad one I spent like 10 minutes in the Badlands, was told that I had a clan but all I know about it is its name, and found myself in Night City rather quickly (after having met exactly 2 irrelevant characters in the Badlands, which didn't make me feel like my char was really a nomad). In the corpo one I was going for cold blooded killer bitch but I'm friends with Jackie for some unexplained reason so my 'lonely ninja who trusts no one' roleplay was out of the window instantly. Guessing the street kid path will be equally disappointing.
And, yeah, before release I was hyped thinking about which factions I would ally myself with on which playthroughs; but the factions really don't matter. You just kill whoever is at the marker. I remember walking into Wakako's office and overhearing a conversation where she assured someone that the Tyger Claws weren't responsible for something, she said "my boys? No, I assure you...". And I was like 'wait, what? I've been killing Tyger Claws left and right, why the hell is she giving me jobs and even helping me if she's their boss?'.
They promised NPCs reacting to what you're wearing. They should've included the factions in that, so if you make a black character you have a chance to join the Voodoo Boys, whereas with a non-black char it would be very difficult. Same with Tygers and asians and so on. Also, progressing with a faction could give V a chance to move up to an apartment that's on their territory and themed to the faction, and the same with cars, clothes, and weapons. There's just so much they could've done with the factions, but there isn't even a proper faction system in this game.

You know, now that you point it out, I can't help but think of something; had they decided Keanu was gonna be in the game right from the start, I can't help but wonder if they would've just scrapped V's story altogether and just had just play as Johnny the whole game. We would play as him and see him fight in the war, get his life ruined by Arasaka, form Samurai, become a Night City legend, and finally end with the nuke at the tower

I think one of the things that kill "open-world RPGs" is forcing a player to play down specific storylines that artificially introduce urgency. CP2077 killed the immersion or the open-world possibilities by making us have to deal with the relic slowly killing V. Though there is no clock ticking where your character will just die if you don't complete the main storyline fast enough, the urgency kills it in a player's mind. When Vik tells V, "you are dying and have a couple of weeks at most to live," that's not really true. You can ignore the main storyline long enough to go around town and clear out gigs, NCPD scanner hustles, smaller crimes in progress, and side quests before returning to it when you have maxed out your level and street cred. But at that point, a player is just going through the motions of leveling up V. Any personal participation in role-playing inevitably forces the player to a level of cognitive dissonance when they remember that their character is supposed to be dying relatively quickly. A true role player would logically ignore all the side stuff and just go through the main quest because that is the path the storyline sets them on, but your character would not be strong enough to deal with the challenges they will face.
For example, in my first playthrough, I progressed far enough into the main storyline where the parade occurs and there's a boss fight in there I was not able to complete because I could not damage the enemy at all, he was so above my character level. I had to revert to a save before I even activated the parade quest so I could go do more leveling up. This forced urgency killed my immersion in the same way the "rescue Shaun from The Institute" storyline killed the open-world aspect of Fallout 4 for me. I am 50 years old and have been playing CRPGs for more than half of my life now. I know what game designers can and cannot do with current technology. With unlimited time and resources, I am sure CDPR could have delivered much of what they marketed to us but the reality is the killer of hopes, dreams, and expectations. I enjoy the game for what it is but I am also disappointed at what could have been. I do not know if expansions or DLC can fix this in the way patches can fix bugs, but I hope that modders find a way to fill in the gaps.

Eh, what's the alternative. If you remove the urgency then the plot often feels like nothing is happening for long stretches of time. And the quests that do add urgency often feel like small pockets of intensity in an otherwise chill world. If you add some timers that reinforce urgency, it makes the game less fun.
I think it's perfectly reasonable to make RPGS with urgent stories, ask the player to partake in them and also enjoy the side content.

Whole premise of the game's story is very stupid. I could forgive the Witcher 3 but this thing in cyberpunk makes even less sense. You are constantly bombarded with messagges and options for side missions troughout the game like you are center of the universe. Plus, it makes absolutely zero sense for V to screw around with anything when his main mission is so much of a priority. He is literally dying with his health constantly deteriorating. It is ridiculuos for him to waste time on some unimportant side gig when he has so much to do pursuing the objective of saving his own life.
It is even worse when you consider that everything ends after the main mission. So you can do side stuff only before the last mission. There is no way V could have enough time to do it all. This pretty much ruins the story for me unless i ignore everything and focus on the main quests only which makes the game too short. And the whole intro is pretty rushed. You begin and it fastforwards to you being the most famous mercenary in the whole night city. It is not exactly believeable.
It should have been like this... First half of the game you need to build your reputation and then everything with silverhand takes place.

  • @nick15684
    @nick15684 4 ปีที่แล้ว +278

Yeah, honestly, the fact that Cyberpunk has even less choices and consequences than Fallout 4, brings to light how lacking its RPG systems actually are. Yeah your dialog was really limited in fallout 4, and it was really difficult to play an evil character, mainly because the narrative more-or-less forced you into being a good character most of the time. Still, the RPG systems, along with the special attributes and the perks under each attribute, allowed you to experiment with a plethora of genuinely varying playstyles. It actually made Fallout 4 worth playing over and over again.
I have almost *800 hours* in Fallout 4, and almost *300 hours* in The Witcher 3. I just can't see myself ever getting close to that much time in Cyberpunk, because after about your first 30-50 hours in Cyberpunk you've seen and done 90% of the meaningful content. It's really a testament to Fallout's core gameplay-loop, which is so *strong* and really engaging for endless hours of time. I come back to Fallout and Skyrim from time to time and still find things that I've never seen or done before.
Even just basic exploration isn't strong, or even well incentivized and rewarded in Cyberpunk; there just isn't much to see or do that's truly unique and interesting outside of quests. The Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, and hell, even The Witcher 3, had way better incentive to actually explore the world and find interesting things. Because those games constantly rewarded consistent exploration. Those games also just have way stronger core RPG elements all-around.
Fallout 4's Far Harbor DLC is a fantastical example of Fallout 4 having way more meaningful choices and consequences than anything in Cyberpunk. I mean, there are *so many* different possible variations on the three main endings of that one DLC. It's really nuanced and well put together, and more of what we'd liked to have seen in the main story of Fallout 4. It's also more of what we'd like to have seen in Cyberpunk, but was sorely lacking.

Here, this was not the case; for all the aesthetically excellent environments, the world was static, boring and lifeless and the NPCs dumber than dumb. Besides the scripted missions, nothing that I did made any difference in the world. I couldn't even sit on a chair if it wasn't in the script ffs!!! I have to disagree. To me the Keanu Reeves theory perfectly makes sense: the whole game feels as if there was an almost full stop during development and then a turn into a completely different direction! Every corner of the game shadows that there was once a vision but they had to cut it off! Most visible it gets in form of the shards and non accessible buildings that indicate a vast lore but they were pushed to most basic solution to implement it in the world - which is a bland text message for the player to read. The buildings feel like there was the idea at some point but then they had to scrap it and instead of doors had to replace them with walls and vending machines etc... The list goes on and on and even expands into the main story line - let alone the shadow of the RPG it was aiming for and then completely got scrapped from the game.... To me this is the worst scam in gaming history!
EDIT: the strongest hint for a directional change is that all the textures and lore obviously where there! The game is pretty - if you have the hardware to run it! The lore is there - but implemented overhastily, most basic and cheap just in the way you would expect if somebody runs out of time...

Did you know in the original script, Johnny Silverhand dies of old age in 2076. He was originally relegated to a side quest where the chip worked as intended where the player slots the chip in to talk to..... David Bowie. Yes, that Bowie. Mike Pondsmith originally wanted Bowie because he created Johnny based off of Bowie. David Bowie died a few years ago, so they would have used his likeness but they must have changed their mind and when they got Keanu Reeves, they completely scrapped that story.

The entire game should've been your time with Jackie and then had the Arasaka Heist as the final mission. With it playing out basically the same.
Silverhand should've been more of a background character. A "goal" or even a mentor for V and Jackie to strive for or emulate. With Johnny being captured by Arasaka right at the end. You go into the Heist to try and free him. Only to find out he was soulkilled and put on the biochip. Then have the rest play out as we saw. Saburu murdered. You blamed for it. Jackie dies and gives you the chip to take care of. Game ends with you waking up in a landfill and Johnny standing over you with his "wake up Samurai, we got a city to burn" line.
Sets up DLC with digital Johnny and Alt and basically the storyline of the main game except Johnny is dying and not you. With us rushing to save our idol or betraying him. But we still get our open-world merc RPG.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines did the whole “Different Origins, Dialogue Options, & Player Experiences” thing considerably better than this game and it came out 17 years ago. That game, a much better one than this one, also destroyed the studio that made it.
Whatever the Hell this unfinished game is, it’s severely damaged the Cyberpunk brand (which is an AMAZING pen & paper RPG system).
Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t really an RPG, fails to deliver basics (that games almost 2 decades old have done), and is unplayable on half the platforms it was released on (due to TRC/TCR violating bugs). How did this get the green-light?!

      Yes.
A major sidequest made as a "Thank You" to Keanu Reeves for his involvement in promoting the game.
What I would've done is basically shortening the original main quest, making it more wholesome, and giving it a sweeter ending.
You're hired to steal a biochip from an Arasaka convoy.
You return to the client and access the biochip's contents.
Turns out the biochip is an engram of Johnny Silverhand. He isn't a massive anarchist anti-corpo terrorist who set off a nuke. But a lonely rockerboy who misses his friends after being trapped for 50 years. He also isn't a parasitic program slowly killing you, but still inhabits your body for a bit and communicates with you via holo-link and with others by having them physically jack into your system.
The objectives of this major sidequest are to get Johnny up to speed on the current events of Night City, visit his old friends and bandmates and have heart to hearts with them, and generally just have fun with him by going out and doing activities in Night City before his engram expires.
He'll sometimes have comments to say during other quests, usually at the start and end. And his major sidequest will have an actual timer. 2 in-game weeks before he "dies" again.

Modern RPGs with real time gameplay should do away with arbitrarily low damage for weapons, damage sponge enemies and RNG loot based equipment and progression.
Firearms should do damage based on their ammo type, with some increase/decrease based on barrel length. While melee weapons would have 75% of their damage be fixed values.
To balance this, Stats would determine _how well your character handles their weapon of choice._
To not make the game a brutal slog at the start, the game will force you to make a decent build before starting the game. By either having you pick from one of several different premade builds, or have you spend all of the allotted Stat Points before continuing.

You picked up on the misleading advertising really well, I thought I'd misinterpreted things, but after reading around, tons of features have been removed. Wall climbing for Mantis Blades, ripping open doors/ripping off turrets with Gorilla Arms (which is now just tied to Body for some reason), hacking with the Monowire, reducing 3 of the 4 arms cyberware to special melees.
An early build for the game had drones available for Techies, but they removed it after deciding the quick hack capabilities basically made drones redundant, but drones wouldn't have been solely about hacking or disrupting enemies, could've been like Zane's SNTNL in BL3, giving it commands and unique equipment/attacks, like a pet in fantasy RPG. Vehicle customisation was also removed for some reason? Despite them emphasising it in trailers. There's more, but these gnaw at me the most.
And the lack of reactivity and choice is such a shame, I love Fallout: New Vegas, and after playing the Far Cry games I've always hoped that someday we'd get a game with a rich narrative and deep rpg mechanics, but with pretty modern visuals and slick action/stealth gameplay, and from the advertising it appeared as if that's what this game was going to deliver, and the worst part is... sometimes it does, and it makes it sooo much more disappointing. I have enjoyed the game and I'm looking forward to another playthrough and seeing what's to come DLC-wise. But CDPR does deserve criticism for this botched launch.

It's not an RPG, but it's a brilliant tragedy with a few different tragic options up for pick. I like the way they did it. You can "save your life" in the form of an engram uploaded to a server waiting for a body that can host your horribly Relic warped psyche, you can choose 6 more months with family and loved ones, you can fulfill your promise to Jacky before he died and become that legend you saught out to become, or you can wipe out the corpos and give Johnny a second lease on life, but you can't do them all.
It was never meant to be a happy ending, it was meant to be an ending that REALLY tested what you actually valued the most, to make a forced compromised decision that is sad because no choice is ideal, but each one fulfills some principle that you can choose to prioritize above all others. Tragedy rarely gives you the option to pick which tragedy you want without stupid alternatives that would have spared them, or crazy amounts of Deus Ex Machina, but this one actually fulfilled that very hard to locate promise, a true tragic ending where Deus Ex Machina wasn't needed, and you could have your pick of one of many different types of tragic ends.
Now... If you hate tragedy and live for happy endings, I agree, this ending totally sucks... But fuck... Even if they had executed this game properly, ANYONE who came into this universe expecting it to have a happy ending is naive. Even if they had delivered as promised this was always an amoral fucked up tragic universe, and the only ending that would ever have been appropriate is an equally tragic ending.
IF you had a choice where you lived on, the only way I could possibly see it being reasonable and within the scope of the tragic nature of the game is if it took you calling in all the debts from all your loved ones, all your family, all the gangs, the Corpos, and everything else, and you lived, but at the loss of all those you cared for, Johnny, selling out to the Corpos, the Aldecaldos dying, rogue being slaughtered, and the Afterlife falling... Yeah that would have been a good ending, you choosing life and forsaking all your promises and values in exchange for it. But any other ending kind of flies in the face of the nature of the game, there should be no "happy/ideal" ending... But I can agree with one thing, they absolutely could have made a horrible, extremely tragic, un-ideal ending in which you lived in exchange for everything else you built.

Everyone dies, sometimes life throws a curve ball at you. At the end of every game, your character “dies” in the sense that you can’t play as them anymore past that point. Besides it’s a fiction, if you don’t like the endings the devs chose, then make up a new one.

@UFHoee Star citizen unlike cyberpunk is still getting additional content. Just not getting released anytime soon because of the massive scale of it all. By the time they release it, even mediocre gaming rigs will be able to play it fully at 60 fps. Maybe they planned it like that from the start. I don't care if it takes another 10 years for them to finish as long as there is content, quality and atmosphere, all of which are lacking in cyberpunk.

CDPR touted this as the most believable city in an open world game to date. In reality, 2001's GTA 3 had more complex, realistic open world systems. The AI is laughable. They really should have made this a linear experience.

I was telling all my friends before release that I was really worried that they wouldn't show us at least 30mins of uncut gameplay. Nobody had any first hand evidence of what they were paying for with their $60. I'm working through the return process rn. I love CDPR, huge fanboy, but sadly, let's be honest, we were lied to.

One thing that really annoyed me about the game is how many of the quest lines feel...unfinished.
Cyberpsycho sightings. 17 minibosses scattered throughout the city, and Regina wants you to try and take them alive. Why? This is something the game has been teasing since 2013. So you play the game, get stronger, level up your character, and one by one you take them all down. You go back to Regina and...Nothing. You get paid and that’s it. I thought I was going to unearth some great secret about why the cyberware was sending people crazy. I thought maybe equipping too much cyberware would make me crazy and this would be a solution to that. But it just...ended.
The Peralez’. Call you up to dig up information on their rival’s death. The more you work with them, the more you realise their brains are being altered by some powerful, outside entity. You speculate about what it is, you decide whether or not to let them know whats wrong, and then...nothing. He pays you, leaves, and then they both block you. You get one call in the credits about a further quest you never get to do.
Lizzy Wizzy. She’s linked to the Soulkiller questline, they want to make a copy of her while she’s still alive without her consent. You later learn that’s because she’s going a little crazy, possibly cyberpsycho, and she outright kills her own manager. You dispose of the body, she pays you, tells you to keep an eye out for her new Braindance, and...nothing. That’s where that questline ends.
The game was absolutely brilliant to play, but it just FEELS unfinished.

@@erenanarchy9538 No, many side quests have no relation to the main campaign so but they’re substantial within their own right, for instance, River’s story arc. Gigs are essentially fetch quests which you can grind through and are entirely optional. I chose NOT to do them and competed only the main campaign and all side missions. I feel like the Regina’s cyber psycho quest and the poster glitch quests do not belong in the side missions as they’re structured more like fetch quests. I did not do them either.

The protagonist of the MQ doesn't always have to be the player character. Oblivion made Martin the protagonist, but it worked because of the PC's role in the story. Cyberpunk did it in a way that took away all player agency for a majority of the game. The story has no replayability and that's a death knell for an RPG.
