    I would say the same thing for just about everyone in I.T. There are not a whole lot of mentors, regardless of skin color. It's hard to know when people are just curious or kinda want to do it or are actually committed to wanting to learn this massive field. I've tried to help some people get into it.. So far only helped one person get started learning in and he's still slowly getting there.
    Much like everything in I.T., the way we learn is by self-driven study. That's how I've learned 90% of what I know. When I find someone who's really willing to teach I love it. They're just few and far between!
    Love your channel. Thanks for the video. I appreciate the point of view.

      Agree. I love helping people out any chance I get, whether it's 5-10 minutes or pointing them to resources. I really enjoy that. I wouldn't call myself a mentor but I enjoy helping where I can, and really don't have an expectation of getting anything back or the person to actually follow through with my help. It's never a waste of time to offer a little help.

    I left a comment on Du'An video and unlike you youngbloods I've been in the field on/off for almost 30yrs (so I am Jurassic Park lol) when I was climbing up the few black men that were doing the same as I, we had a camaraderie and grew together until we all went to different places. I still keep in touch with a few of them to this very day! First off BLACK FOLKS have historically never really helped one another that is why we are still way behind the 8 ball. In my journey's I have been to interviews where black folks were on the panel and other places where the person was the hiring manager! My #1 rule when interviewing in IT is to always show up 30 mins early so that you can survey the culture! If I didn't see any of us, I knew my chances no matter how skilled I was, it was going to be less than 5% unless like you the person was impressed by your presentation. (In IT it's more about PRESENTATION and CUSTOMER/PEOPLE SKILLS). It helps if you have some kind of working knowledge as well. I had a hiring mgr who was white tell me the 411 of the process when I was interviewing for a position, at the end of the interview, she point-blank told me I was hired base upon my PRESENTATION!! but she left me with these words of wisdom " No matter what technical skills you possess, we can always teach you more and how to be successful! but we can't teach you how to deal with people!" In other words, my PEOPLE SKILLS got me the position. I invested my own hard-earned money into buying equipment, getting my house wired and learning and still am learning to this very day. I've talked with black youths about being in the IT field and how rewarding it can be if as you said, "you have to be willing to put in the WORK" I taught myself Cisco, Voip, and best practices for Security and use that on my own equipment! So yes we do need more REAL BLACK faces on youtube etc that do INFRASTRUCTURE etc! that is truly the best way to mentor.

    • @NetworkBruh
      @NetworkBruh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true my man. Black folk has always had that crab in a barrel mentality. But Its all about the work you are willing to put in. In a way im glad i didn't get the help that i was expecting because it made me want it more and it's much more fulfilling because I can say i made with barely any support. But Its also why i try to help others on my channel because its my way of paying it forward. Thanks for tuning in !

    I have been in IT (mostly law firms) for the past 10 years. I have trained people and I have mentored people, but the one thing that I think that you forgot to mention is a mentor's past experience with mentoring. I have been approached by people about getting into IT and there was a big push at first, and then it tapers off. Me personally, I have no problem helping the next person, regardless of what has happened in the past, but some can't. We all know (and you mentioned in the video) that it takes a certain mindset to survive in this field. It takes CONSTANT study to stay ahead of the curve in tech. There is a reason why your channel will get less views than mindless foolishness. It takes effort. By the time someone gets to the point of knowing all the names you mentioned, they are invested in networking. There are other points I can make about a person's motives for wanting to climb the IT ladder, but I'll stop for now. *steps off soap box*

    I can relate to a lot of the stuff you mentioned. Think about being black, young, Immigrants, and don't speak good English. My passion was always in Technology, during my profession, I hit a lot of roadblocks, but every roadblock motivated me to do more/learn. My 1st IT boss was a black man and he never helped me and I lasted that job only 3 months. Today, anyone who wants to enter the IT field has a lot of choices and the cost is ZERO or extremely cheap. But one needs to find their interest/talent and of course proper info/guidance.

    • @NetworkBruh

    Thomas Sowell writes about this. One of the main reasons the Jewish community is so successful is the way they help eachother.
    Spot on though, so much of your own success is based on your desire to succeed. I only hope people don't decide not to try because they feel like they can't. I would suggest that you tell your audience that it's ok to find a white (or other) mentor btw. I've noticed a pattern with friends who feel like they are not part of a group just because they are black. I know two types of racist white people. Hostile prejudice type and leftist soft racists who view black people as helpless. Both are easy to identify, so there's no need for fear.

    • @NetworkBruh
      @NetworkBruh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great comment buddy. You are so right about the Jewish community helping each other. It is the main reason why many of them create generational wealth. It feels like our community has that crab in a barrel mentality but my experience in the field seemed more like a crab getting out of the barrel and not helping the other crabs out. But I digress. Finance technology is the next frontier. There should be many great entrepreneurial opportunities for black IT professionals if we invest in this evolution. They're pushing regulations as we speak for cryptocurrencies and other digital assets. I agree we need more black mentors and I think our opportunity is coming with the new digital financial system. That why I'm trying to learn as much as I can from brothers like yoi but leaning from a someone with more of a hands on approach in a live environment would be better.
