- This video was shot on Thursday August 10, 2023. Thursday is senior day with the entry price of $5. No demonstrations are done on Thursday, so I was unable to video any of that. There is a parade of the tractors every day. I did shoot the entire parade and will do separate videos of them. The next will be gasoline powered tractors. Lawn and garden tractors will also be a separate video.
I would also like to thank Joe from the Gould family for showing the controls of their Longfellow tractor.

It’s always interesting seeing American Traction engines, I find myself wondering why single cylinder designs were so popular on your side of the pond? Compounds were common here in England especially on road locos but also on later and larger agricultural engines.
I have no idea as to why on that. I'll be doing the Sycamore steam show in a few weeks, I'll ask somebody about it.

I did some research on cylinder design but couldn't find anything on the English design. Here is a web page about the Corliss valve used in the U.S. sycamoresteamshow.com/corliss-valves/
I was able to speak with a guy who is very knowledgeable about this. He said it was probably a matter of simplicity, ease of maintenance and economics. As the cost at the time for a tractor between $3000 and $5000. In the early 1900's the vast majority of farms were only 80 acres. Usually, it was traveling contractors that owned them. Also, in England most tractors were used as road tractors for pulling loads. I have also read that the soil in England is a lot wetter and the tractors could bog down more easily, so they were not used very much for agricultural work, like plowing. Even here in the states, the tractors would get stuck in loose soil. There were two 2-cylinder tractors at the show, which I did take some video of one. Hope this answers your question.
