“Keep It In The Backyard”: Why Shouldn’t We Grow Food in Front Yard Home Gardens?

  • A comment I have heard over and over again in the past week or so: "Keep the food-growing in the backyard. No one wants to see that as they walk by."
    Let's take a moment and break down why folks - particularly Americans - balk at the notion of growing food on our own land, in a way that is visible to the public. Why do we think that front yards must be lawns and a few ornamental shrubs, and backyards are where you "hide" the food you're growing to feed your family?
    Where does this stigma against front-yard veggie gardens and fruit trees come from? Why is it vital that we deconstruct this bizarre way of thinking if we want to create truly sustainable urban and suburban communities?
