Started back riding 2 years ago… after a 31 year hiatus! Got a used Ninja 400, rode it 19,000 miles, took it to the track, took it to Tail of The Dragon, took it on a 1900 mile cross-country trip… loved every minute of riding it (save the seconds of 2 nails in the tire, low-siding at the track, and learning the challenge of cornering in the dark!)! It’s still in my garage and probably always will be as a track bike! Of course, I’ve added a Ninja 1000sx (did 24,000 miles) Africa Twin (10,000 miles) and a H2 (4000 miles). In all my recent experience, I still love that little 400! Forgiving, flexible, reliable, affordable, and economical, I really can’t see how you can go wrong with this bike (unless all you do is street riding with liter-bike buddies).
@@Rickmac22 I agree with most of what you said except that I think it’s too heavy for beginners. A beginner’s bike should be around 140kg. No more than that. But the 400 is 170! Almost on par with my 1000cc BMW S1000’s 193!

The DRZ400sm is a great beginner bike. You get to try out several disciplines on them - street, dirt, twisties, track. Reliable/easy maintenance and cheap parts for those learning crashes also lol

Owner of a 2020 Ninja400 for 4 years here with just over 21,000km on it (~13,000miles) and I can attest to the reliability and versatility of this bike. I've had zero mechanical issues with the bike and I mostly use it for spirited mountain riding. There is so much aftermarket support for this platform now too, I put in aftermarket front suspension cartridge kit, did the GXS-R600 rear-shock swap, changed the geometry of the bike, changed the gearing etc and it rides like a whole new bike. I actually purchased the Yamaha XSR900 two years ago but sold it soon after to put toward my new car because after the honeymoon period, I found myself still taking the N400 out to the twisties more often, esp after all the changes I made.
Got my 2020 at end of September. Paid $3000 with 2288 miles. As of today, I’m at 3930 miles. I love the bike. Very forgiving and served me well as a returning rider. I get compliments all the time 😊
I’ve had a ninja 500 since the beginning of this year. Great bike. I’m sure the 400 is just as good. I’ve put 4,000 miles on it in 8 months. Already feeling the itch to look for a zx6r. I know, I probably don’t need one. But damn they’re so sexy

Got my z400 October 2023 for 4k flat. I live in illinois and the guy I bought it from towed it to me from Indianapolis IN. For free. Had 127 miles on it as a 2021 model. I found plenty out there for 4-4500 bucks. So I agree. They are out there.
I grew up in a place where the highest quality most expensive motorcycle is a ninja 250. So when i found there way a 400. i became lactose intolerant and shit my pants
For the same amount of money the 500 is just a better bike it's easier to ride the torque is what you want... Don't kid yourself! Most pol don't race just want a fun cool bike! Yeah it's fun to rev all the way up but that torque is amazing
IMO the Ninja 400 is still the better option for a beginner bike. With the money you'll save you'll easily be able to buy all your gear for riding and likely still spend less than buying a new Ninja 500/451. Plus that Ninja 400 will still hold a great resale value for when you upgrade to a faster bike.
yea buddy u need to understand the average ninja 400 in a dealership is about 4,200 used it is no ones fault but your own that u spent 1,471.15 in upgrades on a begginer bike yammie told u that u would likely grow out of therefore 5,000 is not acceptable and you might not sell the bike for that much but there is a good chance u will if u just lower the price a bit
@ayethasmari2419 I don't own a Ninja 400. I've not been on a beginner bike since I had a Ninja 250. I ride a 2018 R6 and I already ordered the new R9. I'm saying that for the price difference between the Ninja 400 and Ninja 500/451 it makes no sense to get the latter when the 400 is all you need as a beginner. It's why it's reigned as the best beginner sportbike.
Started riding again after a 20 year hiatus and I only had the Ninja 400 on my list when looking for used bikes. Got a 2021 KRT with very low mileage for roughly $4500.
Bought mine (2021 with 900miles only) in August. Was riding in Connecticut for a few days and bought the bike home in NYC. From my experience even a 400 is overpowered for nyc 😂. I mean riding in GCP in 6 th gear about 65 mph and then you gotta pass people? No problem, even in 6 th gear it has enough pull to pass any car/ truck. The only issue i faced in earlier days when I was facing on ramp cross wind. But thats more or less everyone faces so technically no complains at all . I am happy with my bike.
I know everyone loves to talk about these little bikes and I know us superbike and super sport enthusiasts are douches, but this channel is more interesting to me when they feature new reviews of new high performance bikes. This has to be like the 1000th video about the ninja 400 or 500 or some other beginner bike. Just my 2 cents.
I got a z400 for 4200, friends on older sv650s for sub 3 grand, ninja 300s etc. in a college town surrounding a big city, you can find decent options on marketplace if you check your expectations of getting a "new" bike, cuz dealers are quite proud of their inventory... $2500 for Tax, tag, title and service was a no-go.
I have not tried the 500., I just love my 400, and if its 90% of the 500 I'm fine with what I have, 34339 miles and not a problem on my 2019 here in the north east usa, Even if i get another motorcycle I think I would keep the 400, Its just that reliable, This year I recorded my mileage and kept track of all the gas i used, and it averaged out to be 69.74 mpg . How can you beat that. Not bad for somebody who started riding at 52 yo...
@@usernameisusername like the commercial says "Just do it!" Is an incredible feeling once you get use to riding , I admit I was scared a little the first couple of times being in traffic,, but that feeling went away the more I rode, I would say at least take the MSF basic course to see if you like it, and go from there.
I wouldn't recommend a bike with all that plastic for a beginner. A naked bike, maybe a Suzuki SV 650 would be much better. Plenty of mid range power and handles great.
Off topic request yammie the nammie noob of the tube. While researching which after market exhaust to choose, the only information I seem to find while talking to people or watching videos is this “what sound do you like” “which do I find aesthetically pleasing”. Then like a stranger walking into a wild west saloon, the silence and stares, I don’t belong here, as I say “ I don’t care if it looks like a ducks joy toy or if it sounds like a dolphins flatulent, All I want to know which one - when combined with a performance air filter and remap - will give me the greatest performance gains”. I figure if anyone has the knowledge and resources to make a comprehensive list of the top performance gaining exhaust systems, it’s you. Go look, it’s all about the how it looks and sounds. I can’t be the only rider that really doesn’t care if it looks pretty or sounds sweet uWu, just give me the performance numbers There is a channel that does list exhausts, one where there is over ten, but only half of the featured systems have the HP gain info. Thanks in advance, ride safe dudes o7

Shit for my purpose to say I say the heck with even the 400 I would get the good used 300 in instead of saving more cash. That thing will move my booty around for sure.
@ well you know what I ended up getting for my first motorcycle was a 2020 Honda super cub and in a little over year I put 10,500 miles on it so that worked out well and that was no ninja 300. It has 125 cc engine and the engine has not complained at all so that’s cool.
for someone who has less than 6 months of riding a 150cc suzuki 150f, which one would you recommend? My only problem is that the ninja 400 doesn't have a full digital display. the speed on my current bike is underwhelming to say the least, I like travelling +/- 150km
R7 feels (and is) much faster and looks way cooler in black. I've ridden both. If you can, testride both yourself. But I'd get the R7 from the two you mentioned, no question.
Ninja 500 seems like a bike that doesn’t really have a place. You might as well start on the 650 I feel. I love the 400 because it’s the right amount of power to start with and practice with before you get a bigger bike that’s faster and more aggressive. Probably safer to do that as well. That said I have an r3. But was really looking for a ninja 300. Couldn’t find one I could afford though.
Yammie and everyone else I am in need of answers: I live in Greece and don’t have a lot of money but I need a stater bike. I’ve been watching your vids for the past 8 years. Found a CBR500r for 4.7k and a ninja 400 for 6k (both 2018 models). I am desperately in need of a bike and the cbr is about to get sold. Is it worth the difference? What should I do? I can’t handle taking the bus anymore and can’t support a car because of my workplace and home being in a city where cars are just useless due to lack of parking spaces. What should I do?
Bought my N500 for 5k off a co worker. He had one too many bikes lol so now i ride it around town. Great bike. Fast enough to still kill you 😅😅 but a whole lot more forgiving than most sports bikes. I keep telling myself to try it on a long distance ride lol but my HD Road Glide 3 is just way more comfortable for those kinds of trips😅😅
Don't go over a 600 for the sport bikes. I used to ride a Shadow as my first bike and the cruisers are just enough different in the power delivery to make them not a direct match to how a sportbike feels when comparing CC's. I'd recommend anything in the 400-700 range to transition. RS457/660, or N400/500, or R7. Twins to start on, then move into inline 4's.
Bought my 300 and then about two months later, they released the 400 and then a few months later, came the 500 & zx4r. So i had no choice.. 😂 new bike otw tho so ill never get rid of my baby 300.
Hello @yammienoob Im 16 and I want a bike im taking courses soon and already have over 5k saved up. btw I love your videos and getting a Ninja 400 is my goal your good pointers in your videos and many others have really helped me get a idea on what bike I should and want to get. I have enough for the average listing price, but I was wondering if I should get a “23” and use alot or go a couple years back or so to save money on repairs. What do you think?
I would not consider these bikes because a) they are heavy for beginners- almost 170kg, my BMW S1000rr is merely 20kg more! b) they have no traction control, dangerous for any rider.
Hey Papa Yam. I was wondering if you could make a video expressing your opinion on the 2024 Honda Shadow Phantom. I personally think that less is more, and I like the basic b!tch feel that I get when I look at it.

?? They are brand new msrp on their own sight at 5.3k?... That was the same price as the 400. In what world are you walking away with an 8500 dollar bill?... It doesnt even look like they are producing 400s any more.
You are NOT paying msrp at any dealership, especially for a bike that sells itself. Dealership fees and taxes, at their best, will still run you easily over 1000$. At worst you're pushing over 2k$. At my local dealership, out the door prices in their 500s are 7700, 8100, and 8800 depending on trim. This is one of the reasons people recommend you buy used. Literally every dealership has to include fees of some sort. Freight, prep, and registration at minimum. More if they're particularly shitty

Good advise, thanks again Noob!
Started riding again after a 20 year hiatus and I only had the Ninja 400 on my list when looking for used bikes. Got a 2021 KRT with very low mileage for roughly $4500.
To be fair, a lot of people will not even use the full potential of a 400
U could say that about every bike
Great video by noted moto blogger Kawwie Noob!
I am happy with my bike.
omfg dude, quality over quantity. you dont have to post a new vid every day man
Here in Brazil they resurrected the Ninja 300 (same engine as in the Versys), discontinued the Ninja 400 and released the Ninja "500".
I said it when the ninja 500 was announced. The greatest thing about it is the more affordable ninja 300’s and ninja 400’s for beginner riders.
Agree with Yammie Noob recommendation...Ninja 500 / 400 are Great machines..
can confirm, NY honda and yamaha has a preowned 2020 ninja 400 abs ive been eyeballing for $4300
doooooo eeeeeeeet.
@ not until after BRC
follow texan 😭 i’m thinking of getting the ninja 400 when i graduate, glad to hear i can get the 400 for around that price in Texas !
I’m 54. Dying to start but thought I was too old
@@usernameisusernameLol, I’m in my 60’s & riding 🎉
96 mpg is impossible. Thats 30 mpg to much
@@usernameisusername You are NOT too old, you're just right! Get out there and ride!
@@usernameisusername like the commercial says "Just do it!" Is an incredible feeling once you get use to riding , I admit I was scared a little the first couple of times being in traffic,, but that feeling went away the more I rode, I would say at least take the MSF basic course to see if you like it, and go from there.
Thumbnail is Zx4r if i'm not mistaken? Not 400?
I was looking for this comment
I finally got to sit on the "Daytona" 660 and found it a little large for my 5'7" frame. I'm trying to talk Kawasaki into making a 600cc triple :)
I wouldn't recommend a bike with all that plastic for a beginner. A naked bike, maybe a Suzuki SV 650 would be much better. Plenty of mid range power and handles great.
A reliable manageable bike for a sweet price? Reliable and price that's my religion.
I can’t be the only rider that really doesn’t care if it looks pretty or sounds sweet uWu, just give me the performance numbers
There is a channel that does list exhausts, one where there is over ten, but only half of the featured systems have the HP gain info.
Thanks in advance, ride safe dudes o7
U do realise thats a zx4rr as the thumbnail i dunno how you can mess that up
I have a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja 400 KRT Edition with ABS for sale, 2,924 miles, $1,471.15 in upgrades, adult-owned, asking $5,200.
I also have a 2023 Honda Grom (red) non-ABS for sale, 398 miles, $400 in upgrades, adult-owned, asking $3,000.
Also own a 2024 Kawasaki ZX-10R KRT Edition I am not selling. Ha, ha. Just want my garage space back.
Ninja 400 is one of the best engines ever to come out of Japan.
Shit for my purpose to say I say the heck with even the 400 I would get the good used 300 in instead of saving more cash. That thing will move my booty around for sure.
Agreed! 1st gen of fi as my 08 250’ race prepped bike is finicky but so much fun. Here in sf-8k for a 400 otd is nuts. 😅
@ well you know what I ended up getting for my first motorcycle was a 2020 Honda super cub and in a little over year I put 10,500 miles on it so that worked out well and that was no ninja 300. It has 125 cc engine and the engine has not complained at all so that’s cool.
Being a cheap bastard is how you stay riding motorcycles. It's a compliment.
bought a brand new z400 for 4500 euros, i love it :))
That's my bike in the thumbnail... The ZX4RR.. that's not a Ninja 400 yammie
I love all of those Ninjas !
The new 2025 R5 is way nicer than the Ninja 500 and is an actual 500 and not a 450 like the ninja lol. Cant wait to see you review the R5
for someone who has less than 6 months of riding a 150cc suzuki 150f, which one would you recommend? My only problem is that the ninja 400 doesn't have a full digital display. the speed on my current bike is underwhelming to say the least, I like travelling +/- 150km
Doesn't the new 500 have a more upright sitting position?
5 hours with no coolant , thats heavenly manigment compared to what the people in my country do to these bikes ,nevermind the cars ,
How do they compare to zxr 400 from 90's as they were relay good.
It a lot more fun to ride a bike you own instead of riding the bank's bike.
If you’re buying your first motorcycle, I’d say a brand new one… regardless of which model you choose… is the wrong decision.
I just got a 2022 Ninja 400 for $2500 in great shape. with a tune and minor mods you basically have a 500. 451cc isn’t worth the price imo
If I am looking for a dedicated novice level track bike and I can afford a R7 or a Ninja 400, which one would you recommend?
R7 feels (and is) much faster and looks way cooler in black. I've ridden both. If you can, testride both yourself. But I'd get the R7 from the two you mentioned, no question.
As someone who owns one the question is should I ever sell my 400???
Ninja 500 seems like a bike that doesn’t really have a place. You might as well start on the 650 I feel. I love the 400 because it’s the right amount of power to start with and practice with before you get a bigger bike that’s faster and more aggressive. Probably safer to do that as well.
That said I have an r3. But was really looking for a ninja 300. Couldn’t find one I could afford though.
Yammie and everyone else I am in need of answers:
I live in Greece and don’t have a lot of money but I need a stater bike.
Will you be able to afford it?
If in my region the ninja 400 has the same price as the ninja 500 SE, should I buy the 500 SE ?
Im 6foot 7 350 ive never road a bike before but im going to take the msf course first of march what would be a good beginner bike
Do you recommend a 2022 ninja 400 used or 450NK brand new for the same price?
Why is the image on the video not a ninja 400 yam. Yam. What’s going on yam.
Just get a 700 or 800cc instead you’ll be much happier. As a beginner. 400cc my 12 yr old can use that engine in his kart.
Yo Dude I love the videos, im on a 1997 shadow 1100 and was thinking about moving to a 600 or even a 1000, what do you think I should do
Go test ride them to see what you like.
What do you think?
the thumbnail is zx 4rr lol
thats a zx4rr in the thumbnail lol
Ninja 400 for the win!
I bought my ninja 400 seized and replaved the engine, totally worth it
Okay so it is mostly due to cost, which means my 500 giveway entries were still a good idea 👍 👍 🌟 🌟 🌟
Bought a 2013 ninja 300 last month for 3k, loving it but also wondering if I should have gotten a 400. 650 is next anyway so who cares!
Got my 2013 ninja 300 for 1650 last month I’m having a lot of with it
Just bought a used 400 (2023) for 5k
Get the 500 SE version of you can afford it. If not a 400 will do.
TL;DR yes it’s worth it
Chilean flag?
(me with my 155cc yamaha MT15) i mean its alright...i guess
Get a cf moto 450 ss
I still prefer the 450SS over anything else, it really gives you a taste of everything that a big bike can have.
want write your ydyot ninja 500 have on 99,9% biger bore and not stroke as increase displacement beincreasing bore is way easier but it turns out your right and kawasaki is ydot be make biger stroke 👌🏻🤷🏻♂️🍿…. unless side wall of cylinder head was to thin in ninja 400 for play in bore whatever 👌🏻anyways those are basicallly the same bike with small diffrences in engine but i would choice „500”as it achieve the same performance but on lower rpm 👌🏻 according to tst dyno test ninja 500 make asmuch power as ninja 400 at 8800 rpm at 7000 rpm 👌🏻☕️
隼
I have a Z400 (same bike, naked version) and I totally agree. Got one with 700 miles for $4500. It's not my forever bike, but it's a great, reliable, fun bike to start on and learn your basic skills. The best first bike is a USED bike!
😢😭 😢 noob
Yammie, you will always be fake to me when you reccomend the ninja 400. You are a living meme when I hear you speak these words. Cringe. For me you will never pull it out of the toilet bowl. I'm sorry I checked in for this one time in a few years only to hear this crap.
Who out here flipping money though?
