Was just about to finalize my Load Order when somehow after a crash my DLC.esm files vanished causing all of my mods to lose masters meaning I had to validate my game files......Unfortunately that meant my game was forcefully updated breaking all my hard work... I tried to use me .EXE backup but the game would no longer launch......I was at a loss....So glad this tutorial exists!!!! Also A suggestion for anyone in the future once you have a clean downgraded install CLEAN all of your DLC and CC content (use CC content picker to turn it into a separate file) then Create a Copy of all of your Skyrim files on another drive so you never have to do this again (just drag and drop the copy)
Glad it worked! I know how you feel. I have messed up plenty of Mod loads in my day where Ive had to start from scratch. Not a great feeling! I should have mentioned the CC Content Picker in this video. If I ever do an update to this video I will add that detail. Also good idea creating a backup copy of the Skyrim files to another location. I do the same thing now just in case.

Also it wouldn't hurt to pre-install Skyrim script extender and the latest e&b binaries into that copy so that you have a game ready for modding cleaned and preset up off the bat every time you start over

Are there any other methods aside from using the steam depot console? I have let it sit over 5 hours yesterday with no progress. I have pretty bad/slow internet all things considered, so I highly prefer a progress bar or anything that tells me where it is at or if the download has failed. Thanks! ^^
Hey there. Unfortunately if you are on the latest version 1.6.1170 the only method I know of is to use the depot downgrade. It will take awhile because its essentially re downloading the entire game. If you are on version 1.6.1130 there are downgrade patchers available on Nexus that modify the files in order to downgrade. I believe this method requires less internet however I have not tried it myself so not 100% confirmed. hey so im trying to install some mods on MO2 (eg. Cutting Room Floor and Alternate Start), but i can't install them because they are missing the Fishing CC master. and when i go into the CC section in the main menu i can't access it while downgraded to 1.5.97. so when i try to launch the game with CRF and AS the game CTDs. i really want to use these mods but cant because i dont have the fishing master. please help

Hi there. Glad it worked. Also I did an extensive search and found additional instructions to download the language pack. I added it to the description and will add it here as well. I have not tried this method yet so would be worth backing up your skyrim installation. Additional Instructions: If you are looking to change the default game language, and you have not modified your 'Skyrim_Default.ini' file, it is as simple as right-clicking the Skyrim game in your Steam games list, selecting 'Properties…', and changing the 'Language' dropdown in the 'General' tab to the language of your choice. This will automatically download the language pack and .ini file which instructs the game to use it, and you are done. NOTE: 'appmanifest_489830.acf' file must not be set to read-only (which is typically done during a "downgrade" process as well as shown in this video). You will have to first unlock this file before selecting a language. You will want to re-lock it by setting it to read-only again after download. This process will not perform a full verification of file integrity (so it will not break the downgraded Skyrim install), it will simply download the language pack and .ini file.
You can decided which version you want to run. The two most popular versions are 1.6.640 (works natively with legendary content) works with most 3rd party mods. The other version is 1.5.97 which is pre legendary edition that works with almost all mods but you will have to run best of both worlds and ESL backport support to get anniversary content to work.
Can anybody help? After manually coping the files to the 1.6.1130 version and using the best of both worlds patch, my game would crash right after the Bethesda title appears, which apparently means I'm missing masters, but vortex doesn't tell me there's a problem and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
I have not personally tried this method however it sounds like the game is looking for ESM files that are not present. Try using the Anniversary Edition Content Picker as well as Backported Extended ESL Support. The Anniversary Content Picker will allow you to consolidate the added files from the Anniversary edition and you can decide if you want them turned on or off.
Do you only have to start the game until the menu or actually start a new save game before starting the changing process? Kind of a hassle to go through the intro but will do if needed of course
Its recommended to start a new save but it will probably work with an existing one as well. You could also use a mod like Alternate Start to skip the beginning.
Try to redownload the depot files. Make sure they all fully download. I didnt show this in the video but the depot files can take awhile to download depending on your internet speed.
Make sure to wait for all of depot files to download. I shortened this part so people wouldn't have to watch through me downloading every file however it can take a bit depending on how fast your internet is.
Should we back up our depots on a flash drive for future use in case we suddenly get a new PC or something like that just to be safe? So it can make it easier so we won't have to download it all the time? Or not recommended? Its not a bad idea to backup those depot files just in case there is ever a day that Steam does not allow us to access the old files. You could also backup the game directory files itself after you downgrade. Good idea though! Might as well do both change the appmanifest files to read only and also "Only Update This Game when I Launch it"
So i just fresh installed and I'm not sure what I'm looking at with these anniversary files. Says I have to purchase them, can't just download them as you did. Doesn't seem right.
Hmmm that is strange. So I know that it wont let you download the depot files unless you own Skyrim. This is for the special edition and I dont believe it matters if you have anniversary addons purchased or not.

No problem! Its a different in the fact that in this tutorial we are just downloading the specific files for each version and replacing them. The downgrade patcher modifies existing files to spoof the game into being a lower version. Both methods work perfectly fine and can also be use in tandem with each other depending on what you are trying to achieve.
Did you wait for all of the files to fully download? I skipped that part in the video to keep it short but it can take awhile to download the files as its essentially just redownloading the entire game.
It wont matter unless you want to download additional creations. However with Nexus mods you will be able to find all of those creation and more so I don't think it will hinder your experience.

I didn't show it in my video but the depot files take a little while to download. Make sure the download finishes before replacing the files. Additionally if you are already using mods make sure you are using the correct version of SKSE64.
@@circuitscore In my case I do not have mods installed and I waited for the download on the Steam console to complete with the three folders and I got a black screen when I started the game and it suddenly closed
If you're talking about getting the legendary edition on your 360 then unfortunately that will not be possible as they haven't updated the original version of Skyrim in a long time. I do not believe there is a special edition for the 360 either.
I don't think you can use IDM only in the Steam Console. Reason being is it needs to verify that you own a copy of it through Steam. Luckily though Steams servers are crazy fast. If you had the original files from another computer and owned it through Steam it should still launch. Ive copied the files to a new drive on my computer and it still launched just fine without Steam.
No just that specific game. Each game in your Steam library has an app manifest files associated with that title use for updates. As long as you modify the file I showed in the video your other games wont be affected.
This is only for the Special Edition version of Skyrim. The standard edition should not require a downgrade since the latest version didnt break mods as far as I know. I haven't modded OG Skyrim in a long time.

I did everything step by step and now I find myself at minute 4:58 where you start the game and access the game... in my case the game doesn't even start, it closes automatically without even reaching the menu to start my game, any solution please? ☹

erase everything in main folder, unistall the game, install, then downgrade (sorry man) Before that, backup your save files. After that. never start on steam again
Make sure to wait for all depot files to download. It can take awhile. You will get a confirmation in steam console once the download is complete. Try to replace all files from each depot folder again. If none of that works backup your save reinstall the lastest update in steam and try to replace the files again. Additionally make sure you are using the correct SKSE64 for your version.
Ok, i have a Similar issue, but not the Same entirely. You see, my PC doesn't have Internet, it's a fairly old PC, but can handle mods well, Only updates i am able to have, are ones that i can find on the Internet via my Phone. So do you perhaps know where i can find updates for Legendary Edition of Skyrim? I would really appreciate it! I want to update the game from Base tho, so i also don't know if I'll need every Update Before 1.9.32.0 or if I'll JUST Need 1.9.32.0 Either way, i would appreciate it if someone can help me to a site where i can download the Update files maybe.. Sounds like you are trying to update a non Special Edition version of the game aka the Original version of Skyrim. I unfortunately only have depot commands for the special edition of the game. By the way you would still need internet even if I had the commands. All this process is doing is re downloading older version of the game and replacing the files. Same if you found version 1.9.32 on the internet you would still need internet to update your game.
You will have to find the Italian depot files. I am having hard time finding the command however if you can find the Italian depot command its as simple as downloading the files and replacing them in the root directory of Skyrim.
Cant help you there mate. This method only works if you own the game on steam. You could try the unofficial downgrade patcher on Nexus but it only works up to 1.6.1130 and also not sure if its GOG compatible.

I went with 1.6.640 on my last mod build just because of easier compatibility with the legendary addons however there is a mod that will add compatibility to 1.5.97 as well. Cant go wrong with either version.

Ok dumb quest, but i don't think 1.6.1130+ will work for 1.5.97 will it? Arthmoor hide all of the previous USSEP patch files. I have 403 mods not all have updated so why im still on that. Game runs fine but i know you can play for hours, then bam just crashes. So im just curious here. Your method does work tho done it for fallout aswell.
Nevermind, yours is a kink from where Nexus stores them. It says 266-4-25b, the newest one he's got is 266-3-1-17 so on. So it is the right one, my bad.
No worries! Yeah luckily for us Nexus archives all links to old versions of mods even if mod authors try to hide old versions. The link in the description is a direct link for the USSEP for each version. Happy modding!
@@circuitscore Doing that Didn't fix it but i figured it out. I was using vortex and that was my issue. Switched 100% to mod organizer 2 with no issues
I noticed you did not install the SKSE for the specific version of the downgrade. Isn't that necessary? Edit. can't get past the 'Play' Game Menu, Skyrim does not start the game
SKSE is necessary for certain mods. Fallout has a more strict Steam DRM where it wont let you launch the game from the official exe file without updating the game. Where as Skyrim doesn't have much for DRM so it doesn't matter. Make sure all of the depot files are fully downloaded before replacing them. I didn't show it in the video to keep it short but one of the commands took a little while to download.
Check out Anniversary Content Picker. This will allow you to consolidate all CC content and load it with a mod manager. www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/58890
Sometimes the depot commands will fail and you need to retry it a day later. Also make sure you have enough space on your PC. Even if it seems like you have plenty others have said clearing space on their PC helps allow the depot command to execute for whatever reason.
It should work on an existing install as long as its from Steam. If you run into any issues with it launching I would try a fresh install of the latest update and then downgrade. As for an external drive it should be no issue as long as you have it as a mapped install location in Steam.
After downloading the depot files try to fully close down steam and then replace the exe file see if that works. Steam doesn't need to be open after you have downloaded the files in the console.
I skipped past the part where I downloaded the files for the sake of keeping the video short and to the point. Make sure the files fully download and you get a confirmation in the console.
I am not very familiar with MCM Helper however looking at the Nexus mods files page it looks like you can download an older version specifically for 1.5.97 in the files tab.
@@circuitscore ,you need to tell people to remove Vortex because the profile it creates can interfere the original files of the game(it load the option menu buy when click play it crash)... I learned that from the hard way and cry about it at midnight... Some info I need: Does the unofficial skyrim downgrade from nexus better or this way of yours?

Its not a bad idea to backup those depot files just in case there is ever a day that Steam does not allow us to access the old files. You could also backup the game directory files itself after you downgrade. Good idea though! Might as well do both change the appmanifest files to read only and also "Only Update This Game when I Launch it"
So i just fresh installed and I'm not sure what I'm looking at with these anniversary files. Says I have to purchase them, can't just download them as you did. Doesn't seem right.
Hmmm that is strange. So I know that it wont let you download the depot files unless you own Skyrim. This is for the special edition and I dont believe it matters if you have anniversary addons purchased or not.

I downloaded the game in Englise, then i downgraded the game, drag and drop the files in the skyrim files, and then choose french (for me), and i did it, i was pretty simple tbh, so here it is

successfully changed it to version 1.6.640, but now none of the skse loaders are compatible with it, so i can't even start the game, let alone mods, because it says i need to update to the correct skse. what am i doing wrong?? i'm trying to make it version 1.5.97 now because at least there's an skse loader for that version. i probably sound very silly rn im not very tech savvy lol, i've just been trying to get my skyrim to start for several days now.
use the correct version of SKSE for the version of Skyrim you are using
Head over to the SKSE website and make sure to download the version associated with 1.6.640

No problem! Its a different in the fact that in this tutorial we are just downloading the specific files for each version and replacing them. The downgrade patcher modifies existing files to spoof the game into being a lower version. Both methods work perfectly fine and can also be use in tandem with each other depending on what you are trying to achieve.

Did you wait for all of the files to fully download? I skipped that part in the video to keep it short but it can take awhile to download the files as its essentially just redownloading the entire game.
Great guide. Just one question. It says in the menu that online services are disabled. Does that matter for any reason?
It wont matter unless you want to download additional creations. However with Nexus mods you will be able to find all of those creation and more so I don't think it will hinder your experience.

I've got the same issue
I didn't show it in my video but the depot files take a little while to download. Make sure the download finishes before replacing the files. Additionally if you are already using mods make sure you are using the correct version of SKSE64.
@@circuitscore In my case I do not have mods installed and I waited for the download on the Steam console to complete with the three folders and I got a black screen when I started the game and it suddenly closed

If you're talking about getting the legendary edition on your 360 then unfortunately that will not be possible as they haven't updated the original version of Skyrim in a long time. I do not believe there is a special edition for the 360 either.
can we actually download the depot file with idm instead? or shared from another computers?
I don't think you can use IDM only in the Steam Console. Reason being is it needs to verify that you own a copy of it through Steam. Luckily though Steams servers are crazy fast. If you had the original files from another computer and owned it through Steam it should still launch. Ive copied the files to a new drive on my computer and it still launched just fine without Steam.

No just that specific game. Each game in your Steam library has an app manifest files associated with that title use for updates. As long as you modify the file I showed in the video your other games wont be affected.
I'm trying to install 1.5.97, I did everything you said up to 5:05 but when I run skyrim it CTD after I hit load on a saved file.
Have you downloaded BEES? It is linked in the description and is needed to run the game with AE content.

This is only for the Special Edition version of Skyrim. The standard edition should not require a downgrade since the latest version didnt break mods as far as I know. I haven't modded OG Skyrim in a long time.
followed this to a T and now when i open skyrim through th skse launcher it says "skyrimSE.exe" cannot be found....
That is a strange one. Maybe try to install a mod manager like MO3 or Vortex and see if it can launch the game.

A mod caused this problem for me. Im using Vortex and this mod Cities of the North.
I didn't show it in the video but the download takes a little while to complete. Did all depot files finish downloading prior to replacing the files?

Before i did these steps I could open Skyrim in steam, but not on skse loader. Now I can’t open Skyrim anywhere. Please help
erase everything in main folder, unistall the game, install, then downgrade (sorry man)
Before that, backup your save files.
After that. never start on steam again
Make sure to wait for all depot files to download. It can take awhile. You will get a confirmation in steam console once the download is complete. Try to replace all files from each depot folder again. If none of that works backup your save reinstall the lastest update in steam and try to replace the files again. Additionally make sure you are using the correct SKSE64 for your version.

Ok, i have a Similar issue, but not the Same entirely.
You see, my PC doesn't have Internet, it's a fairly old PC, but can handle mods well, Only updates i am able to have, are ones that i can find on the Internet via my Phone.
So do you perhaps know where i can find updates for Legendary Edition of Skyrim?

Sounds like you are trying to update a non Special Edition version of the game aka the Original version of Skyrim. I unfortunately only have depot commands for the special edition of the game. By the way you would still need internet even if I had the commands. All this process is doing is re downloading older version of the game and replacing the files. Same if you found version 1.9.32 on the internet you would still need internet to update your game.

Cant help you there mate. This method only works if you own the game on steam. You could try the unofficial downgrade patcher on Nexus but it only works up to 1.6.1130 and also not sure if its GOG compatible.

You will have to find the Polish depot files. I am having hard time finding the command however if you can find the Polish depot command its as simple as downloading the files and replacing them in the root directory of Skyrim. Let me search around and see what I can find.

1.5.97 coz most mods work with this
I went with 1.6.640 on my last mod build just because of easier compatibility with the legendary addons however there is a mod that will add compatibility to 1.5.97 as well. Cant go wrong with either version.

It should be nearly the same. I does take a little while for the file to fully download. I didnt show this in my video to keep it short and to the point. Did all the files confirm they completed downloading when you tried it?

Ok dumb quest, but i don't think 1.6.1130+ will work for 1.5.97 will it? Arthmoor hide all of the previous USSEP patch files. I have 403 mods not all have updated so why im still on that. Game runs fine but i know you can play for hours, then bam just crashes. So im just curious here. Your method does work tho done it for fallout aswell.
Nevermind, yours is a kink from where Nexus stores them. It says 266-4-25b, the newest one he's got is 266-3-1-17 so on. So it is the right one, my bad.
No worries! Yeah luckily for us Nexus archives all links to old versions of mods even if mod authors try to hide old versions. The link in the description is a direct link for the USSEP for each version. Happy modding!

I noticed you did not install the SKSE for the specific version of the downgrade. Isn't that necessary?

SKSE is necessary for certain mods. Fallout has a more strict Steam DRM where it wont let you launch the game from the official exe file without updating the game. Where as Skyrim doesn't have much for DRM so it doesn't matter.

So after downgrading I uninstalled skyrim and now it crashes on startup meaning I can't play it all. Why is that? Do you know any fix?
I fixed it by simply downgrading it again but for some reason whenever I press ESC it crashes

no one else got an error when dowloading the second command for 1.6.640?
Sometimes the depot commands will fail and you need to retry it a day later. Also make sure you have enough space on your PC. Even if it seems like you have plenty others have said clearing space on their PC helps allow the depot command to execute for whatever reason.
Do i need to uninstall and then reinstall Skyrim.
Also does this work if Skyrim is installed on an external drive.
It should work on an existing install as long as its from Steam. If you run into any issues with it launching I would try a fresh install of the latest update and then downgrade. As for an external drive it should be no issue as long as you have it as a mapped install location in Steam.

It will still work if you don't have the ae update.

After downloading the depot files try to fully close down steam and then replace the exe file see if that works. Steam doesn't need to be open after you have downloaded the files in the console.

I am not very familiar with MCM Helper however looking at the Nexus mods files page it looks like you can download an older version specifically for 1.5.97 in the files tab.
@@circuitscore ,you need to tell people to remove Vortex because the profile it creates can interfere the original files of the game(it load the option menu buy when click play it crash)... I learned that from the hard way and cry about it at midnight...
