      Best analysis of this abomination I've read. I played in a recorder ensemble in college, and learning how to play bass recorder, to learn subtlety, and work with an ensemble, was to bring me back to when these instruments were viable 'band' sounds. This is just wrong, on so many levels. It's almost as bad as "Awful Tune" for singers.

      You can buy an EWI (electric wind instrument) that plays like any woodwind (minus clarinet, recorder, and bassoon) with a customizable fingering system to your liking with an onboard synthesizer and midi control for under $800. The 5000 also has wireless capabilities, but it’s a bit more expensive than the USB (don’t buy it, not worth it) or the 4000s (totally worth it). Totally recommend for any wind player, really similar to the ecorder

    An additional note about the eCorder. You said it sometimes produces an unwanted lingering note. This happens sometimes with MIDI wind controllers, which this is. The eCorder is equipped with a panic button, which in MIDI terms is an "all notes off" button which will instantly turn off any notes that are "hangovers". I don't have the instrument myself but I read about it in the on-line manual.

    As a guitar synthesiser player, I think it’s great that players of acoustic/traditional instruments can get access to non-standard/unusual sounds from the instrument they prefer playing, rather than having to fumble about with keyboards. I guess things like the Roland Aerophone and the previous Akai and Yamaha wind controllers are more targeted towards players of instruments like saxophone or clarinet than recorder players, or have you tried those too ?

    5:39 I was thinking that it would be a waste if it couldn't cover the whole range that existing acoustic recorders can cover, but I guess they did one better and extended the low end by a fourth below a Paetzold subcontrabass...and the high end a third above the standard top note of a garklein, I think?
    They can't have programmed what pitch every possible combination of fingers should produce, so I guess that means it must do some kind of physics simulation that works it out.

  • @raykent3211
    @raykent3211 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Nice until we got to the price! I have a yamaha wx7 and had a much cheaper casio wind instrument (toy). Both suffered from slow attack and decay. There's a good reason, the pressure sensor has a slugged response so that it doesn't respond to fast variation and thereby act as a microphone. But there's another problem which I realised when designing my own instrument. A person practicing flight of the bumble bee for 2 hours may well be operating a key switch 1000 times and I couldn't find a mechanical key switch guaranteed for more than 50,000 operations, about 100 hours of intensive use. Less than a year for a serious musician. Sure enough the first octave switch on the yamaha gave up the ghost after 2 years of non-intensive use and is not easily replaceable. I used optical switches, maybe this uses capacitive. Either can, if good enough quality, have much longer lives. But does it or are they the same cheapo elastomer buttons as in the yamaha and casio? On the plus side.... The designer has paid attention to things like the nuance of falling pitch as breath pressure fades on a renaissance recorder. Bravo!

    • @cdstoc
      @cdstoc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an Akai EWI 4000s. Your comment about mechanical key wear suddenly explains why Akai went with electronic touch keys. They have their own issue, namely they are unpredictable if your fingers are too dry, but they're quick and don't wear out. I've heard that the breath pressure sensor can wear out but mine is fine after 10 years, and its attack is good enough to detect flutter tongue. The EWI was only $800, making it a bargain compared to the eCorder.

      Hi Ray. I have a wx5 and use a Roland SonicCell as a sound generator. It doesn't thrill me but $400 as opposed to $1800 is a win in my column. I'd appreciate reading more of your thoughts on the merits and downsides of your experiences and insights into recording, performing, etc. with the Yamaha. thanks in advance.

    • @raykent3211
      @raykent3211 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stanhegeman8751 hi Stan. Don't trust my memory, it's shot! I think mine was a wx5 plus a wt11 (?) sound module (basic fm ). Very electronic sound, but amusing to play bass clarinet two octaves below register! My favourite sound came from using it with a computer SoundFont player on cor anglais. Gorgeous. For me it's much easier to do slow expressive melodic lines than on a keyboard. I decided to get it because I had a dx7 keyboard with gobstopper breath controller and liked that, but dribbled a lot! I never used it professionally, just home recording. Oh and the octave switch is fine, maybe I confused it with the toy casio. With the advances in technology since then I reckon a good reliable wind controller could now be made for about 150 euros. I guess the small market means an enormous markup. The one I made was years ago, but if I tried again now I think it would be shameful to have trailing leads..... rechargeable internal lithium battery and bluetooth comms should now be expected. How are you doing with your gear?

    How does the mouth piece function in making sounds if it is electrotonic?

    • @jordillach3222
      @jordillach3222 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I contains a breath sensor that triggers and modulates the sound produced by the instrument's electronics by detecting air pressure variations. The same kind of sensors used in all MIDI breath controllers.

    • @raykent3211
      @raykent3211 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To add a few words to what jordi said, there's a range of air pressure sensors available. Uses include air conditioning systems. The range and sensitivity varies widely to suit different applications, but they're the same in principle. The mouthpiece on this is probably just a plastic shell, you can dunk it in sterilising solution. The breath then goes into a chamber that contains the sensor and has a restricted outlet to provide some back-pressure, as you'd get from the windway of a recorder. The pressure in the chamber pushes the diaphragm of the sensor in and, usually by way of a piezo, a small electric signal is produced.

    You're on Patreon? I looked for a Sarah Jeffery on Patreon and no one heard of you. Search came up nil. A musician named Sarah Joy or something similar came up, but not the recorder player. I had to take your above video to the sweet spot and click and discovered you have a name for your channel I didn't recognize. (Just an FYI that you might be missing potential patrons looking for you and unable to find you on search on Patreon.) Cheers, and keep doing your thing.

    Ha, 30 years ago two musicians were talking on Radio Vier about how Johann Sebastian would appreciate modern digital music instruments. One of them mentioned how much work it used to be, just to take all these percussion instruments to a remote city. He would love to have the samples and a digital drum kit. Now I see this e-corder, what would the Bach opinion on this one?

    Do these come with their own, built-in speaker/s? If I want to stroll into the countryside and play away, I certainly don't want to have to carry anything else...it would take the niceness out of it, for me. I'd love to have one that just has a built-in speaker. Anybody...HEEE-E-E-E-ELP!

    This looks like a fun instrument to play with, but too pricey to have just for fun. Sarah, have you ever tried the Mollenhauer Elody? I would love to hear a review from you on it. I know it's a different instrument to this, but I wonder how it would compare regarding the electronics. I've had my eye on it for a while, but the price tag (which isn't far off from the eCorder) is discouraging to even think about it while I've been building my wooden recorder collection. Still it would be good to hear your opinion on it.

    Would love to see you do a review of the WARBL - warbl.xyz/ - a $250 electronic wind instrument / MIDI controller that can be used as a recorder.
    Vastly cheaper, the downside is it doesn't have the two bottom double holes, instead relying on alternative fingering - and I'd love to know exactly how annoying that would be for a professional recorder player :-)
    Recorder Fingering: Page 13 of warbl.xyz/WARBL%20Fingering%20Charts.pdf
    (Note that one awesome thing about the WARBL is that everything about it is open source, from the source code to the electronics design, so if you think there would be a better fingering, it's possible to change it to whatever you want, and the guy who makes them is super-responsive to customer requests, so likely he'd just do it for you, esp. for a professional musician who'd be helping him improve the product for everyone.)

    Now you may be forgiven for thinking that this thing sounds like a crappy mono synth from the early '80s, which could be picked up for pennies off eBay. But hey, at least you get the reassurance of a 90-day😱 warranty for your $1700 investment.😂

  • @CarolHaynesJ

    Thought the electronic sounds were pretty horrid - sounded like a cheap keyboard synth from last century, There has been a huge advances in "real" sound technology (look at some amazing electronic pianos for example) so I think it is reasonable to expect decent sampled sounds at the price point. Looks like it has potential but not there yet IMHO.
    Fun review though - loving your videos (just bought a bass recorder as a newbie player to wind instruments and found your channel fun and really helpful - thanks).

    I could see using something like that to get cleaner raw midi notes for faking other instruments digitally. I know you could use a good microphone and send the audio to some effects software or whatever, but even though the result might sound more natural - it wouldn't be as clean... especially if you had background noise from your environment that you had to contend with (depending on sensitivity in receiving). If I had the money to splurge as a regular recorder player - I'd get it just to play around with... It's like having a multi-effects pedal for a guitar... but it's more like: designing the electric guitar and attaching the effects pedals to the body of it. Fancy, but I'm sure just like with electric guitar - development will come over time. Also depends on just how much people who like playing recorder would want to develop a digital version. Maybe going to something like a keyboard is more optimal due to all of the advancements over the years already made on those. It's basically a keyboard that is shaped like a recorder, but does it compare with the capabilities of a mid-range keyboard?.. I don't know enough about it too compare, but just being able to play big chords on a keyboard makes a huge difference with digital music capabilities.

    The recorder has long been my instrument of choice. I like the sound of a larger recorder like a tenor, but my hands are too small to play one comfortably. An electronic recorder checks several boxes for me, including the ability to change pitch. It's hard to find a good one at a reasonable price, especially since I'm a hobbyist and not a performer, but at least this one looks cool. And it seems to have the relevant bells and whistles.

    he toke a MIDI controller and put it in a recorder! it is a dandy! but it is only a recorder with a midi controller chip and interface circuitry put in it....same thing can be done with a piezo mic into a midi controller...i did it thirty years ago! i like it. the cost comes from his development costing and marketing saturation pricing!! he developed it with out an engineering budget. retired executive engineer! BUt Sarah did a great job of demoing it for sure!
